Hunza Health Secrets for Long Life and Happiness Hardcover – January 1, 1964

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

This book tells the story of Hunza and the Hunza people - people who in over two thousand years of almost complete isolation seem to have evolved a way of living, eating and thinking that has substantially lengthened their lifespan and dramatically reduced susceptibility to most of the illnesses to which "civilized" people are prone. Formerly Hunza was an independent kingdom and a land of mystery; today it is a part of West Pakistan, functioning as an independent state with a king on the throne. One of the smallest monarchies in the world, the whole country is only 100 miles long and in areas scarcely a mile wide. In Hunza, people manage to live over one hundred years of age in perfect mental and physical health; and men father children at ninety. But their greatest achievement is the fact that sickness is rare, that cancer, heart disease, heart attacks, high or low blood pressure and childhood diseases are virtually unknown. There is no juvenile delinquency in Hunza, and divorce is a rarity. There are no jails, police of army, and there is no need for them, as there hasn't been a crime reported for the last one hundred and thirty years. Telling their story, one cannot help but admire the great inner strength which enabled these people to change from warlike creatures to peaceful human beings. Their mind and body must be made pure before it can be directed to higher things. This cannot be bought cheaply - it must come from within. Perhaps one who has it is not conscious of it, but then the tranquility, once we have it, cannot be lost. And this is why the Hunzakuts were able to conquer anger, hatred, feverish greed and dangerous ambition and establish a perfect balance of body, mind and spirit.

We had this book at home growing up and when I learned the author, Renee Taylor, was still alive and well into her 90’s, I wanted to read it again as an adult. It’s still interesting. Plus, having this older copy fills me with nostalgia.

This book is has immeasurable value in chronicling the lives of a people group (the Hunza people) who have build a civilization on principles of peace and joy and love. They live in harmony with one another without the bells and whistles of modern civilization. In fact they have found it better to live without the unnecessary "luxuries" US citizens find common place. Back to the basics, learning to live simply and working with the people in your community seems to have a lot to do with harmony with your neighbor and the peace and joy in your soul.
The author does a good job describing her experiences in order that the reader can see and feel the same things she has.
I will not sell this book. I hope you can find one for yourself...or you could let me know if you need a copy and I could help you find one.

The secret to keeping healthy is in this book and many others. In fact, this book is similar to the movie, LOST HORIZON, which takes place in the same region. Nobody has to become chronically ill, if they would only look for the solution. The solution is "prevention", not smoking, drinking, and eating anything you want.

I thought I would never be able to find this book again. I read it many years ago and it got lost in my many moves. I was thrilled to get a hard copy in such good condition.

I read this book over 30 years ago and it spurred me on practice a natural hygiene lifestyle. (eating predominately fresh uncooked fruits and vegetables, free of all animal products including dairy products) I had spent the next 30 years in the pursuit of nutritional science research and completed the nutritional science program taught at The Life Science Institute formerly in Austin TX. After 30 years of research and practicing a similar dietary lifestyle as described in Renee Taylor's book I can say that I owe my sound health, free of illness and disease for over 30 years to this book! This book is an excellent introduction into the miraculous world of illness free living that can be enjoyed to well over 100 years without medical doctors.

Not what I expected.

Since I first became aware of the Hunza, I have been fascinated by their simplicity and long life. As a teenager, I began my search for every available piece of information about people who live long and healthy lives. I was, and still am, willing and prepared to incorporate healthful living into my own lifestyle. That is why I have kept my copy of this work at my bedside for many years. It reminds me, daily, of the vigor and health I intend to maintain throughout my long life. This volume carefully and succinctly instructs the reader to follow the approach to life as the Hunza live it, as best one can in western society. Be happy, enjoy the happiness of others, eat well but not too much, exercise vigorously, preferably on hills, avoid envy, keep busy, love your friends, don't worry, play. And my addition, read more books!
