There's no mistaking the 1968 mood of Play Dirty: this cynical war movie could only have been made during the disillusioned Vietnam era, despite its WWII subject. Michael Caine plays a British captain in North Africa, tapped to lead a suicidal mission across the desert to destroy a German fuel depot. He's got a scurvy band of mercenaries to help him (this was a year after The Dirty Dozen, so keep that in mind), although most of the time they seem indifferent to both the job and Caine's survival. Nigel Davenport plays Caine's black-hearted yet lethally competent assistant, possibly the most nihilistic character on the side of the good guys in any war movie. Large patches of the film play without dialogue, including a grueling sequence in which vehicles are winched up the side of a hill, but somehow this adds to the grim, fatalistic atmosphere. The hard edge suits the style of director Andre De Toth, veteran maker of many a B-picture (this was his next-to-last effort). Caine plays it repressed and close to the vest, the better to contrast with Davenport's Mephistophelian soldier of fortune. Oh, and the ending--well, you'll want to stick around for the ending. It was 1968, after all. --Robert Horton

I kind of love Play Dirty.

I like how cool Michael Caine is in this movie and how he works with the other actors, even though I’m not sure any of the characters make that much sense. I love how brutal and unforgiving the desert is—how our heroes don’t just get thirsty or stuck in sand—though they sure do get stuck in sand. I like how nasty, brutish and short the combat is.

You might not love it; you might find it too cynical (it certainly revels in its cynicism) or think there are stretches where nothing happens or not find the characters particularly sensical. You wouldn’t hurt my feelings if you felt that way, but I really enjoy watching this movie, even though it’s flawed.

I keep coming back to the feeling that the movie is just cool; it looks cool, and its attitude is not like other war movies. It’s like Where Eagles Dare for grownups. I need to write a whole essay to explain that idea, but I don’t want to. Where Eagles Dare is a romantic idealization of war and the people involved, with an intricate plot and, eventually, with clear good guys and bad guys. Play Dirty may have no good guys—or the people we think are bad may be good—or good and bad may be inadequate concepts. In both movies you want to be the protagonists anyway because they act and dress cool and have cool guns. Play Dirty somehow meets that childish need I admit I have while not romanticizing war, or at least not over-romanticizing it.
If it weren't for Ice Cold in Alex, I would say this is the best World War II desert movie

If you enjoy movies like Tobruk or the old Sahara movie with Humphrey Bogart or the current series Rogue Heroes, you probably will find this entertaining. Michael Caine and Nigel Green.

A great desert war film with a cast of men on a suicide mission, and betrayal by their superior.

A previous reviewer has done an excellent job describing the movie's plot and characters. I would like to emphasize that Play Dirty, in my opinion, is one of the more accurate portrayals of the North African theater of operations in World War 2. I have been hooked on this movie for almost 30 years! I watch it probably 6-8 times a year and never tire of it! Michael Caine is fabulous as Captain Douglas. It is rewarding to watch as Captain Douglas learns the ropes, gains confidence and ultimately, some respect from his group. I like the ironic plot twist that has Captain Douglas group succeed when the High Command suddenly does not want them to! I rank this movie as one of my all time favorites right up there with the Desert Rats (Richard Burton)The Desert Rats and The Desert Fox (James Mason)The Desert Fox which I also very highly recommend! There is also a real good Italian film titled El Alamein that you may equally enjoy!El Alamein Two other titles came to mind after I wrote this review: Humphrey Bogart's classic Sahara Sahara and another oldie but goodie Five Graves to Cairo Five Graves to Cairo.

I love history and movies that follow detail actions that defined the hardships of WWII veterans. Play Dirty lives up to all that. Michael Caine is the reluctant hero thrust into commanding an odd group of commandos on a mission to destroy a fuel depot deep behind German lines. Nigel Davenport is superb as the criminal anti-hero and the tense relationship between him and Caine keep you interested. This movie describes the hardships of desert warfare in true form. It is vast, dangerous, edge-of-your-seat action that won't leave you disappointed.

Watched this movie years ago and wanted a copy especially with a commentary. Agree with other reviewers this is a great movie. Like my review of Eagle Has Landed, RaveWave who released the movie fails to mention this is a Region B movie and will not play on U.S. Blu Ray or DVD players. Neither in the product description or details is the Region B mentioned. Only if RaveWave provided a picture of the back of the DVD would you find the Region B logo. I have bought other movies by RaveWave and they also fail to mention the movies were Region B.

Twists and turns, ups and downs. Pure adventure. You have to see the ending to believe it and that's all I'll say about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein unbekannter Klassiker
Reviewed in Germany on June 20, 2017

4.0 out of 5 stars War is a criminal enterprise
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 22, 2014
A behind the lines mission movie starring Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport, Nigel Greene and Harry Andrews. Colonel Masters (Nigel Greene) fights the war using criminals. Captain Douglas (Michael Caine) is attached to the group as an officer, their mission: blow up Rommel's supply dumps. There was a time when this seemed to be on every week. I probably first saw it 25 years ago but I've not seen it on TV for maybe, 15 years now. I remember the Daily Telegraph's description of this, (I paraphrase) 50% of the title of the Dirty Dozen and 100% of the plot. And that's how it's remembered ... as a Dirty Dozen clone, one of the many inferior rip off's. There's some truth in that obviously, but this is a peculiarly British take on the genre and should be remembered as such. No one would ever call it a classic and yet it is not the terrible movie that some would have you believe. I suppose if it didn't have Caine in it, it would've been long forgotten and yet, here it is, newly released on Blu Ray. It might have the mighty Caine but the best thing about it is Davenport's cynical Irishman Leech, a criminal who sunk his own tramp steamer for the money without bothering to tell his crew. Caine's character lies somewhere between his Gonville Bromhead in Zulu and his Tosh Hearne in Too Late The Hero. Look out for his Caine's actor brother, Stanley. This was one-eyed Hungarian Andre De Toth's last movie and it's one of his best if you ask me. On Play Dirty he doesn't seem impeded by budget restrictions as he was on his 50's b-movie westerns. Those westerns obviously came in handy because you could probably describe it as an African western - The Long Range Desert Group as the Indians, the Germans as the cavalry etc.
I watched it on a smallish TV but I had a good close-up look of the screen. I didn't think the picture was too bad, in fact, at times it was rather good however don't expect The Italian Job or Zulu. This has not seen the comprehensive clean up of those pictures. At times it's quite well defined, especially the faces - one of the best ways to tell if it's HD or not. My main gripe would be the film imperfections - the disappearing and reappearing blobs, the line that runs vertically down the right hand side of the screen. In terms of extras, there is the square root of f@ck all. Nada. Zero. Zilch. There aren't even any subtitles. Nor is there a piddling trailer. Co-writer Melvyn Bragg is still alive and he loves yacking - couldn't someone have roped him into a commentary. OK, maybe Caine wants to forget about it but surely someone could've asked Davenport to provide a commentary or even a few reminiscences before he passed on. Apparently, Richard Harris got the sack because he wouldn't get his hair cut - something like that. We film buffs don't ask that much.
