Product Description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. So many confusing options when searching for smoke & co detectors. Choices range from simple models to voice models, etc. These have a nice alert tone to them compared to some. This version is not interconnected (one going off will not trigger others). My home was not wired for smoke detectors so I went with the battery version. All tested ok and install was super easy. These are a newer model and rated well in testing. Many of the more sophisticated models seem to give false alarms and can have complex issues, these are dead simple and work with no false alarms thus far.

I had a house fire and my smoke detectors failed. Luckily, I was right there and saw the fire in time to get everyone out of the house. One night shortly after the fire, I couldn’t sleep, so I went looking for a smoke detector on Amazon. I think I looked at all of them. And I found this one. I bought it because it seemed to have all of the features that I needed. I really like how you can put the batteries in without taking apart the whole thing. I always hated that. And I would sometimes let it go for too long because I didn’t want to have to take everything apart and put in a new batteries. It’s a bonus that it is a AA or AAA battery (can’t remember off-hand). I tend to have new ones around the house all the time anyway rather than a 9 volt. Because I have to stand up on a ladder, it makes me nervous to change batteries on smoke detectors. If I don’t have to take it apart while on a ladder, I’ll be more apt to change batteries regularly. If you are looking for something easy and not intimidating (like for an older adult) this might work well for your purposes. I also really loved the fact that it speaks. When we were testing it, it had a very nice, loud voice command me to evacuate! The voice sounds urgent enough to make me really pay attention. I put it right outside my bedroom door, so if I’m sleeping I will hear that and get out. After you go through a fire, you are very aware of and concerned about safety in your home. I don’t ever want to go through that again. And I felt very lucky that I was awake and saw the fire. The smoke detector makes me feel much safer in my home. And that’s the goal, to be safer. It was worth the cost.

Meant to order the version that is hardwired with battery backup, blame it on me looking at too many similar items. At any rate this model is alright! I'll simply replace the batteries twice a year.

Pros: Alarm for both smoke & carbon monoxide. Super easy to install & test. It's very, very loud--as needed for an alarm. Can be programmed to say a specific location in the voice alarms, great if you use more than one of these in a bigger house. AA batteries more likely to be lurking in your junk drawer than a 9V! Easy to replace batteries in slide-out drawer. Being battery-only makes it easy to install in any location without extra electrical drops needed.

Cons: No hardwired power supply. Power lights are tiny & barely noticeable, plus they flash instead of steady light. Voice alarm isn't as clear as some higher priced alarms are, sounds a little tinny & muffled. Button for testing & quick shutoff is a little small & has a ridge partway around it so won't be as easy to whack it with a broom handle if it goes off unnecessarily. (Haven't burnt any toast yet, not sure how sensitive this model is)
