Not Squirrel Proof When I Bought It, But It Is Now!

I originally purchased this feeder in 2010... As you can see it has held up fairly well; probably because of the mods I have implemented that have prevented it's destruction: primarily from raccoon activity.. I have had to install several mods to make the feeder truly squirrel (critter) proof. I live in a forested area of SC, USA and we have many critters here who like to visit bird feeders both day and night... squirrels, raccoons, opossums, woodpeckers, and flying squirrels... The feeder as sold does not prevent critters from getting at the food and gorging themselves... What you see in the attached pictures is the modified feeder with an internal baffle/divider fabricated from sheet metal, installed to separate the seed compartment from the transformer compartment. This baffle is easily removed for cleaning; it just slides in. I'm using an very low current, 800V, electric fence transformer which is a mounted along with a small circuit board in the transformer compartment. This transformer is designed for pets. The design consists of three electrodes of flashing material on the post to prevent climbers. The lower and upper flashing wrappings are hot relative to ground. The feeder and middle wrapping are at ground potential. On top of the feeder is an aluminum bar mounted on insulators which is also hot relative to ground. This is for my flying squirrel problem. There is also an insulated toggle switch on the bottom rear of the feeder for powering on/off. Also, on top of the feeder is a neon light, utilizing a simple relaxation oscillator circuit, that blinks at a rate proportional to the HV output of the transformer. Another problem I've had recently is redheaded woodpeckers. These guys will rake the seed out of the feeder by thrashing at the seed until, apparently, they find that ideal seed; wasting a dozen seeds to the ground for every one they take. Fortunately, they weigh quite a bit more than the tit-mouse, sparrow, and chick-a-dee. However, the weight adjustment, as built, does not allow reducing the weight limit below the threshold needed to thwart them... so as you can see in the pic, I used a piece of baling wire to form and extension on both sides of the perch pivot spring assembly to reduce the weight limit on the perch. This has solved the woodpecker problem while the smaller birds still have access...

I've reviewed several various "squirrel proof" feeders and many are lacking in their ability to deter squirrels.
THIS feeder definitely saves lots of feed and does not allow squirrels to access bird seed and feed.

It's nice and heavy, so the wind doesn't knock it about. The mount on the bottom is heavy duty and well designed, no wobble or spinning on the post.

I tested it both hanging and posted mounted. I think it is best when suspended from a tree branch. The top is so smooth that squirrels and raccoons cannot sit on top and reach over to the feed without pushing down on the closure bar. It's a great design in that regard.

Saves Birdseed- we have lots of Blue Jays, Mourning Doves and Grackles in our area and they are all seed hogs. This Feeder, when set on the lightest resistance setting does not allow those wasteful bird species to feed. However, if you prefer to allow ALL birds to feed, you can set the blocking bar to a heavier setting and they can feed also.

I was impressed with the nice finish and weight of the sheet-metal. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds do not leak out of the sides or bottom. For the bottom holes, I recommend attaching the bottom pole bracket, even if you are hanging it from a tree, it adds weight and the included screws will close up those holes.

IMPROVEMENT, I think the hanging bars are nice as they are made from a single bent piece of heavy round-stock/wire, BUT a large raccoon can get on the feeder and spread those bars causing the feeder to fall from the tree. This happened once and the raccoon was unable to pull the top open. I one small hole just under the side suspension bracket, ran a small zip-tie through the hole, around the vertical bar and back through the hole. this allows the top to open and close, but keeps large feeder gluttons from spreading that suspension bar. Put a zip tie on each side, leave enough "play" to still open and close the top. That's my hack, you're welcome :)

Holds a lot of seed and it is lasting so much longer now, I can't say enough about the positive aspects of this feeder. I'm back to purchase two more of them and will retire my other feeders.

Before posting this review, I have had this feeder in service for many months as I wanted to really see if ther were any issues. Someone else posted a review showing a bird (House Sparrow) dead in the blocking bar mechanism. I tried every possible scenario to see if a small bird like the house sparrow could get itself in that position and I just could not reproduce a movement that would trap a bird. The reason I bring it up is that I want others to know that trapping a bird with this feeder would be an extremely rare occurrence and we have chickadees, the titmouse, juncos and California Finches all using this feeder without incident. I think small birds are safe.

I'm attaching a video which shows the details and includes a "just for fun" segment of a raccoon feeding from this squirrel proof feeder, but in order to get that sequence, the feeder had to be taken down and places within standing reach of a raccoon. They do not get into this feeder when properly mounted.

In closing, it's a great feeder, I'm voting with my $$$ and buying two more, I LOVE it. Definitely, recommend it to anyone who wants to reduce their feed bills for years to come. And also for those who wish to keep the "bully birds" off the feeder.

I loved this feeder, and so did my birds, for the first 6 months I had it. Then somehow the metal gizmo that holds the tension on the perch sprung open, and even though I found all the parts on the ground underneath the feeder, I could not assemble it to work properly. So my smaller birds can access the seeds, but my cardinals found their access either closed off or with very limited access. I’m on the fence about whether to order another one if it lasts only 6 months. The construction, other than that spring gizmo, is excellent and it is easy to open to fill it. Holds a lot of seed.

I bought it because I wanted to keep squirrels from accessing the bird seed. The sellers claim this feeder does so, but it does not. Squirrels can easily reach between the perch and the feeder to access the food (see pictures). The squirrels can access the seed so easily that they can empty the feeder of 8 pounds of food in a couple of days. Very disappointing, especially since a bar or two installed between the perch and feeder would probably be enough prevent this access. But build quality it'self seems okay, but this means nothing to me since this feeder does not serve a key function for which I bought it.

Not recommended unless you want this feeder specifically for feeding squirrels, in which case it's perfect.

OK, but needs some quality control

The design is ok, but there were several little problems:
- The cover was not fully bent into final position. I was able to bend it to properly sit on the base.
- The spring mechanism is still too tight even on the lowest setting so a squirrel would not rigger it.
- The Hanger was twisted slightly
- The hanger did not insert properly and needed to be forced
- The internal clips that should hold the hanger were way too big and did not hold in place properly
While i did manage to make it workable, I would not buy this again.

Cheap flimsy sheet metal. Bends out of shape quickly

If you are were looking for something to keep grackles away then you might want to look elsewhere. Spring tension is too hard even on its lowest setting.
If I had to buy another bird feeder, this (piece of crap) would not be on my list of choices.

Good feeder with a few (solvable) issues

I bought this feeder but thought it came with the mounting pole, due to the description wording - it does not. I got a 7 foot galvanized black fence post from the hardware at less cost than an official bird feeder pole, and it its stronger. It holds a good amount of seed, and keeps it dry from my experience. However small holes in the metal for the optional tree bracket and other hinges allow small seeds to fall out. They supply you with tape to cover these holes - but it seems a cheap solution to a preventable problem. The tree/hanging bracket (included) did not work well for me as squirrels can hang on to the tree with their rear legs and reach the feeder, it is only about 12" away. The pole mount solved this. Another gripe for many will be the fact that certain birds, depending on species and local habits, will figure out how to hold the seed cover open - by sitting sideways and using their rear to jam the cover from closing whilst they eat. My solution was to use the lightest weight setting, which just slows them down enough for me.

Best features:
- Squirrel proof
- Rain proof
- Sturdy construction

Pros:
- Quality construction
- Looks nice
- Holds a lot of seed, keeps it dry
- Squirrel proof (although see below)

Cons:
- Description sounds like mounting pole is included.
- Birds can figure out how to prop the cover open
- Holes in the metal can let seeds out
- Not squirrel proof if hung from tree bracket

Opinion:
Perhaps not the absolute best feeder you could find, certainly a custom made feeder could solve the dew design issues with this. Although so can some after market modifications to this feeder (cover holes, pole mount, adjust weight setting). If you find it for a good price I would recommend the purchase, there certainly are more expensive feeders out there with less to offer.
Give it a try if you've tried other feeders, you'll like it I'm sure.

The squirrels are no match for this feeder! Some larger birds like Grackles have been able to feed (the weighted bar goes halfway down but not fully under their weight... even at the lowest setting). However, it is uncomfortable for them because they are so large and there is an overhang. I have mounted this on a stokes pole with a stokes baffle and made sure it was well away from hanging branches and fences. It's beaten the squirrels now for a year so far. Seed choice can limit the amount of larger birds if that is your goal.
