The sound is excellent; I've only had better sound from a first pressing LP, but that was 40 years ago.

The CD has both the original Jamaican version, and the version we know that was re-mixed in the UK... on the album version of Stir It Up, we have those guitars.... the Jamaican version of Stir It Up is not the spacey nod jam most of us love, but instead has a clear, tight small group instrumental sound with scratch guitar. A similar difference in Stop That Train - the Jamaican version has a spikier energy which was mellowed out by Island records for release.

It really is nice to have both albums together back to back, and at a good price.

The Wailers Catching The Fire Of Creative Energy

Though they'd been around for years before they made this album,Bob Marley & The Wailers had become extremely discontented with the nature of the Jamaican recording industry. Artists were basically paid minimum wage and encouraged,at the very least,to produce near constant output. With their association with Lee Scratch Perry and his Upsetters the Wailers began to not only go against this system of musical apartheid but a new type of music began to grow from this called reggae. By 1973 the band were signed to Chris Blackwell's Island Records and, even though they may not have realized it at the time,right off the bat the wound up recording what is still commonly acknowledged as being one of the defining recordings of reggae history.

Blending that now classic repetitive style of reggae guitar rhythms with plenty of wonderful electric pianos,shuffling percussion and tight vocal harmonies elements of American and English pop,soul and funk also played an enormous part in this. Of course the result is what could be described as an album of reggae standards from "Concrete Jungle" with it's complex marriage of rhythm and melody as well as "Kingy Reggae","No More Trouble","Slave Driver" and "Midnight Ravers". Peter Tosh's two contributions "400 Years" and "Stop That Train" dig a bit deeper into the groove but still keep the melody of Marley's sound intact. The tempo goes into somewhat more of ska territory here with somewhat more lighthearted lyrics than the more spiritual Rastafarian themes of the rest of the album.

And of course there's "Stir It Up",with it's wah wah accents and well known hook. The combination of guitars as well as Peter Tosh's accents on keyboards are part of what makes this album musically so successful. Because of reggae's distinctive rhythm,it's one of those genres that's all too easy to make boring if one doesn't have the talent to work within the genre correctly. These guys did because their music definitely came from somewhere. No only had they been first inspired by early American R&B and soul music but the funk era also had a tremendous impact on them as well. One could here that in this albums depiction of reggae as being a genre defined musically by a strong sense of melody,groove and a strong sense of social and spiritual conviction. That combined with the extraordinary songwriting are probably what contributed to the enduring spirit of this particular album.

The Sound That Shocked The World

CATCH A FIRE is the second mainstream album release for The Wailers. Contrary to popular belief, their first album released outside of Jamaica was SOUL REBEL in 1970. This, however, would be the album were Reggae truly arrived & the masses took notice. This was the album that inspired singers/songwriters around the world, both known and unknown, to learn how to write & perform Roots & Ska Reggae. The bands primary members, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer, along with Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett & John Bundrick, were about to embark on a truly historic run that would bring the poetic, revolutionary & spiritual nature of Reggae to an audience that had never heard anything quite like that before.

Although the entire band worked wonderfully together as a cohesive unit, this was very much an album that was dominated by the musical genius of Bob Marley who wrote every song with the exception of 2 which were written by Peter Tosh. However, one of those songs by Tosh, "400 years", is one of my personal favorites on the album. Take a listen to that one and reflect as it's pure lyrical & musical mastery! Overall one of the most important albums in music history as it was the beginnging of one of the most influential periods of the 20th century.

CATCH A FIRE was the culmination of years of hard work were The Wailers took an island genre, honed it's sound & message, into a reflection of the injustices and hardships they were experiencing in Jamaica & other island nations & made it mainstream. Reggae as a particular genre of music now generates billions of dollars worldwide and The Wailers are one of the primary reasons why. I think one of the most underappreciated things about this band is it's musicianship.

The albums first track, "Concrete Jungle" has a gorgeous introduction with an almost blues rock feel to it and the guitar solo is spectacular. The variety on the album is wonderful, from the hard driving songs of opression like this song, "Slave Driver" and the aforementioned "400 years" to a song of courtship and desire like "Baby We've Got A Date" that has almost a Country music feel with the slide guitar. This was a time of great revolution for around the world for oppressed peoples to be able to live, love, worship and express how they felt according to their own conscious. The island nations were fighting for freedom from their european oppressors as were many of the African nations with whom The Wailers shared a kindred spirit with and their songs were the songs of freedom, in all aspects of life, for many of those nations and became a ralling cry as well.

These were the times of movements such as "Black Power" & "Civil Rights" here in the U.S. and many historical artists and bands were picking up their pens and writing songs of revolution. The sheer poetry of groups like The Impressions, Earth, Wind and Fire, Sly and the Family Stone and artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and James Brown, were singing about those of African heritage rising up and solidifying their power and spear heading a revolution of sorts here too.

It's interesting that The Wailers patterned their group after The Impressions with a rich poetic vibe along with a gospel or Spiritual message just under the surface. This is a clear portrait of what made this band great and historic. The Wailers who were truly about to shake the very foundations of the world in a very short period of time had, by this time, developed a tight sound to go with their lyrical content.

The Wailers were blessed with three very talented and deeply spiritual songwriters in Marley, Tosh and Neville O'Riley Livingston aka Bunny Wailer. The music they made as a part of this band and the music produced after their break up are some of the most beloved at any point in music history. This was truly a special time as the world was changing at a rapid pace and no one had ever heard of this type of music, coming from this point of view before at least not on a "mainstream" level.

This is why today The Wailers and especially Bob Marley are so very beloved and admired by countless millions around the world. Their songs were songs of revolution and not just in a physical since but also mental and spiritual as well. Their will never be another band like them and those of us who were blessed to witness their greatness while together have never and will never be the same.

This is a must-have classic! Yes, if you study the history of this recording - one of Marley's first - there was a lot of post-production overdubbing of some lead guitar and other parts, to the originally "raw" sound of Marley and The Wailers. But that's just how this album has always been. This re-release changes nothing. The result, while not "purist" by some standards, is still a very good-sounding record of some very soulful music. As for this release, it's a recent vinyl re-issue. The cover is different from the original "lighter" cover, unfortunately, but other than that it's fine. Still sounds great on the turntable and has that nice wide LP dynamic range that often is compressed away with CD audio.
