Many factories and warehouses rely on ideal levels of temperature and humidity, especially when working with wood. Manufacturers, distributors or retailers of wood floors and wooden musical instruments should use a hygro-thermometer to prevent damage to inventory.

Update: February 9, 2015

Alas, another of these excellent units has bitten the dust. They simply don't last that long, even when the probe is protected from the elements. We originally bought two of them because they are designed so much better than other indoor-outdoor thermometers-humidity devices. And, for a couple of years, they worked liked a charm. However, like our first, our second unit's hygrometer has now failed--it reads 29% at all times. If you read the story at the end, you'll see that the first one failed last year, getting stuck at 15%. Very disappointing!

Plus, there's a problem reaching the company-- I detail that at the end, too.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

As you can tell from my other reviews, we've been on a quest for a decent, accurate, easy to read indoor-outdoor thermometer with hygrometer (humidity reader). Every one we've tried has failed in particularly fundamental ways--screen hard to read, digits too small, too much superfluous nonsense, inaccurate, etc.

Well, Extech has accomplished a minor miracle with this product.

1. Readable. You can see the digits from across the room.

2. Crisp display. They show up well even when the only light is in another room.

3. Accurate. The humidity and temperature readings are virtually identical when the probe sits by the base unit's air opening--off by only .1 or not at all--meaning the unit is incredibly accurate (finally we found one!).

4. Worry-free. There's no worrying about the batteries in an external unit.

5. Data-rich. Has min/max button.

6. Frustration-free. Battery compartment easy to open.

I purchased one of these about 1 1/2 years ago and about one month ago I noticed that the remote sensor probe was not displaying correct values for humidity level, so i contacted the manufacturer to inquire about buying just the probe and replace it myself, since it looked like it was simply attached to the cable by a tiny philips screw.
The representative at Customer Service that handled my request told me that although at the moment he did not have easy access to a replacement probe he would gladly send me a brand new Extech 335713 item free of charge, that the company stands fully behind all products it sells and that it takes care of all customers requests to the best of its ability, and that is exactly what I got !
I feel that Extech deserves to be mentioned here at Amazon.com for the way its representative handled my request which was above and beyond my expectations with apparently a single aim in mind : the best customer care at any cost.
Congratulations to Extech, and i wonder how would a competing company have handled my request ? It could not have topped my experience with Extech !

Good points: This thermometer/hygrometer is compact and the numbers are easy to read.
Warning: It is very sensitive to temperature changes, so in our case, the external sensor was somewhat near a vent and the external temperature and humidity were always changing up and down quickly as the vent let steam out. It could react a bit slower to avoid inaccurate readings in cases like this (gusts, vents, etc.).
Problem: Unfortunately after some months it broke, past warranty which is 6 months according to the leaflet that came with it. The external hygrometer now displays levels such as 10% whereas it's actually around 50%.
I brought it inside and put the sensor tip right beside it. The internal and external numbers don't match. Comparing to an older Brookstone one that I have, the numbers are different by almost 10F, but I can't swear for either.

It seems to work OK.... BUT... The EXTREMELY SHORT lead on the outdoor sensor makes it very difficult to "install". The sensor needs to be located OUTSIDE (obviously) which means sticking it out through a window (two windows.. main and storm). This leaves precious little of the lead INDOORS so the display needs to be located virtually on the window sill... awkward at best.

I can't imagine that the cost of making the lead at least 6 feet long would raise any problems.... either cost or function... it's only a conductor after all... nothing high tech here.

Without this short coming I would give this 5 stars.

After I received it, the first thing I did was to do the salt water test for accuracy. (This model does not allow adjustment). Both humidity readings were within 1% of the 75% target. The temperature readings were within 0.1F of each other. After I took the device out of the salt water environment (plastic bag), the probe sensor changed quickly to the room humidity within minutes. The built-in sensor took a bit longer to stabilize. But after about 1 hour, they stabilized to within 2% of each other. This is well within their specs of +-5%. From what I can tell now, this is quality equipment for a very reasonable price. (I hope time will not change my opinion.) Unlike other models, this takes only 1 AA battery, and I don't know how long it will last.
