Sinners in Paradise

1938

3.9 out of 5 stars (14) IMDb 5.8/10

An airplane cracks up during a storm and crash-lands on an uncharted South Sea island. The pilots are killed, but all nine passengers survive unscathed, including runaway bride Anne Wesson (Madge Evans), fugitive criminal Robert Malone (Bruce Cabot), blonde strumpet Iris Compton (Marion Martin), crooked senator Corey (Gene Lockhart), "radical" heiress Thelma Chase (Charlotte Wynters), munitions salesmen Jessup (Don Barry) and Brand (Morgan Conway), and cheerful Chinese cook Ping (Willie Fung). Forced to fend for themselves, the marooned passengers are helped along by resident beachcomber Jim Taylor (John Boles), a convicted murderer who has escaped to the island to "find himself". What he finds, of course, is romance in the form of Anne Wesson. Intriguing and entertaining.

I enjoyed the movie just for a bit of diversion. Not a "great" movie, but a pleasant movie. Doesn't require any big thoughts or even much attention. Like someone else said, it's good for a rainy afternoon or in my case, the middle of the night.

I guess I was expecting more, but by this late stage in Whale's career I suppose he directed whatever Universal Studios wanted him to (and that wasn't much). First of all, the print that Alpha used is not the best (this remains unrestored), and the sound especially suffers. I probably missed half the dialog at points. Whatever. I could nevertheless perceive the contrived plot (even beyond the contrived scenario) and half-baked acting. This is a far cry from Showboat or Bride of Frankenstein, both made only a few years before.

Except for being a poor print,I'd class this film alongside Five Came Back anyday.Whale was great and the comedic touches are a hit.No Dwight Frye as listed, but a young Milburn Stone,of Gunsmoke fame,John Boles has a good starring role,as Madge Evans,Gene Lockhart a bit of comedy relief, along with the parrot.

Sinners in Paradise was quite enjoyable. The print was damaged but it did not spoil the movie for me. It is no Gone With The Wind but it is a nice little film to watch during a rainy evening.

It's not a comedy, though parts of it are funny. And it's far more realistic than the TV show.

This film reminded me of why I like old movies. They're better written, and don't rely on special effects, so the story and acting carry the film.

The storyline is much like GI. A plane with 8 characters crashes near an isle. Only this time they find 2 men hiding there already. The only semi famous actor you might recognize played the hero in the original King Kong.

There are several plot twists I won't reveal. It's quite a good adventure story. The only truly bad thing is the Asian character who is an awful ugly stereotype, stupid, crazy, and often abused for laughs.

The actors also mysteriously never need to shave, and the actresses mysteriously keep their perfect hairdos. But compared to coconut radios and visitors from half the world, it is a marvel of realism.

Ok movie. Not something really to die for but an interesting period piece. Shallow at a number of points but not a bad movie to have on in the background.

Not bad for a movie produced in the 30's. I would recommend this movie for an evening when there is nothing good on TV.
