Great Prequel to Final Fantasy VII

I decided that before I play the classic Final Fantasy VII, I should play Crisis Core to get into the story. I must say this is a phenomenal game, especially to anyone new to Final Fantasy VII! In the story you will play as Zack as he has to contend with the questionable actions of Shinra and SOLDIER. Along the journey you'll meet Zack's mentor, Angeal. You'll see how his legacy is eventually carried onto Cloud. Meet Tifa, Aerith, Sephiroth, Genesis, and Cloud who's the main hero of the classic Final Fantasy VII! In addition to playing through the main story, there are an additional 300 missions that can be completed after beating the game. The missions are a treat to complete, if you like to get 100% collection of items in games. I have one gripe about the story writing for Zack in the end, but I shouldn't spoil anything for newcomers. As you journey through the main story you'll meet and see the back story of many characters that are from the classic Final Fantasy VII plus featured in other Final Fantasy VII related games. Now I have to go play Final Fantasy VII to see where this all goes!

A weird game... but a very pleasing prequel ~

Weird because of the spinning DWM. Instead of gaining experience the usual way, this gauge spins and you gain SP which can be used in various ways. The DWM also levels your materia, it also provides special attacks, summons, limit breaks, and more. My beef with it is that it has a more 'random' approach that I do not like. Despite being an action RPG, I like having some control over things. You do get to set up your main attacks, which is nice, but you really can't initiate your special moves. I can't tell you how many times I got fed up with watching the animation for Octoslash when the enemy was one normal hit away from death...

That was my big negative. The rest is positive. Except that I am not overly enthusiastic about some of the story elements. There is a lot of melodrama. It's like watching a soap opera when Angeal, Genesis, Zack, and Sephiroth are all in a scene together (or when at least two of them are in a scene together). But the overall story is complex and well played out. I especially enjoyed seeing some of the characters that appear in FF7 making brief (or more important) appearances.

Some of the characters are rather one dimensional, mostly those that don't appear in FF7. If you have played 7, then you kind of know what is in store. You really know who is going to make it into the next game and who is going to 'ahem' kick off. But knowing that, I still enjoyed the game. There were some poignant moments, like where Zack fell into the church in the slums... I was thinking... so that's why Aeris was instantly attracted to Cloud! (And they call her Aerith, for the record, despite it sounding rather odd... like Bar'th'elona, Spain).

Voice acting is generally very good. I am impressed for this being an English dub. There is a lot of voiced dialogue too. Cut scenes are good, but generally filler. Some of the regular scenes have great interactions and wonderful graphics, so the cut scenes are not adding THAT much more to the game. There are a few that are more interesting, like the holographic fight on the Junon cannon.

Gameplay is rather ordinary. The fighting gets a little old after awhile. New enemies make appearances, and difficulty really only amps up on boss fights or when you are facing multiple tough enemies. The more difficult battles are in the optional missions. Basically you just accept a mission well below the recommended level (it will say Hard or Very Hard) and you are in for a nice challenge.

Equipment is limited in application though not in variety. The materia system is good, but improves when you can fuse materia. And there are optional missions where you can look for more items, materia, and equipment. These pay off with leveling as well.

Though the leveling system is weird, you do level more often with tougher enemies. I don't know the exact formula, but it has to do with attacking, dodging, and your overall SP compared to the level of the enemy. But again, it's not an exact science.

For action RPG fans, especially those who enjoy the Kingdom Hearts style of battle system, this is a fun and exciting game. I liked the prequel story, but wish it was a little more like the interface of FF7, especially when leveling up is actually important and stats actually make a difference in battle. The random seeming factor of special attacks, leveling, and materia leveling is a detracting factor, but not enough to really take much from the game itself. A solid PSP title, worthy of five stars if it didn't say Final Fantasy in the title. I admit it. I expected a little more polish.

Top choice for your first PlayStation Portable UMD game

Final Fantasy VII was the game that made me want a PlayStation 1. I played Final Fantasy VII briefly after it was initially released at a friend's house, then my own copies later in college on both the PC and PlayStation 1. So when I ordered a PlayStation Portable (PSP) recently it seemed like a no-brainer to pick up a copy of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII as one of my first games.

Having previously played and enjoyed the Kingdom Hearts games for the PlayStation 2, this game was the perfect choice for my first PSP game, and is the major reason I'm extremely glad I didn't pick up a PSPgo, and will continue to keep my PSP-3000 for as long as it works.

Crisis Core tells the events that lead up to Final Fantasy VII (in fact ending with the opening of FF7), and I'll admit the story is pretty moving (Lost Odyssey was the last game to make me tear-up, and I didn't cry during FF7). The gameplay will be quite familar if you've played the PlayStation 2 Kingdom Hearts games, featuring a mix of real-time battles with RPG elements. Depending upon your preference for such things, it offers various simplified elements, such as the shop and leveling, which I think works fairly well.

The game plays great on the PSP, offering fairly tight controls (movement via either the d-pad or stick), with great sound and video (as usual with Square (Enix), the CG videos are top-notch and they look great on the PSP).

The game is UMD-only, and there seem to be no plans to make it available electronically. Compared to the other UMD game I've thus far played, Star Ocean: First Departure, the UMD seems to be read from fairly frequently, but loading times are fairly quick, and it's something that you can easily ignore.

To completion, with a number of optional missions finished, I put in a little over 27 hours into the game, and will definitely be putting more hours in to get near 100% on the optional missions, and perhaps even another playthrough (via new game plus).

On the default difficulty I died once or twice (excluding those times a Phoenix Down kept me going), and those were more from stupidity then anything else. Generally, I'd say the game is fairly easy, with some fights a little more difficult than others. Unlike Final Fantasy VII it seems to be a little easier to be a completionist in this game, but since the main area is pretty spread out, those of this type might get a little bored walking back and forth (unless they're following a guide).

I give the game 5 stars of 5, as I found the game to be extremely enjoyable, and the amount of time put into it currently, and in the future, is vastly more than the price of entry.

Recommended for fans of Final Fantasy VII, as well as those who enjoyed Kingdom Hearts on the PlayStation 2.

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core for the PSP is one of the best games that you can play on the console. Even if you don't entirely know what Final Fantasy is, this is a great starting spot. I truly had a blast with the game as it tells a long and amazing story with an awesome soundtrack to play to. Sure the graphics may or may not be top of the line all the time, its still a fun experience especially if your new to the series.
