This seems like a fantastic little camera but there is one huge problem. (Read to the end -- problem solved!) I purchased this for an older laptop -- obviously since it didn't have a built in video cam. The problem: on my laptop the usb ports are in the back and the audio ports are in the front. The camera cable splits at the bottom allowing the usb to stretch approximately 12" to the audio port. Not quite long enough to reach on my laptop. Therefore I have to either return the cam or purchase a usb extension of some sort. I am not up on all the correct terminology but I'm sure you get the gist.

On a positive note, both the audio and video work great. Having the adjustable led lights (cable has a switch that allows you to adjust the brightness of the lights) is a huge plus based on experience with other cameras that either leave you in the dark or totally wash you out. The ability to tilt it to other angles is also great. Not quite sure how or where to mount it on my laptop -- I'll figure that out once I decide whether or not to keep it.

The cam also does not come with any instructions but it doesn't need any. Just plug it in and the driver automatically loads.

As I was typing this lil' review my husband walked in and I showed him my dilemma. He's an engineer. Now I feel really silly cause he simply fed the wire underneath the laptop and waa laa! It's a little awkward having wires dangling as I schlep my laptop all over the place, but after testing it out I've decided it's definitely a keeper.

One last positive -- the base opens up and allows you to hang the cam on the top of your computer with ease and the camera itself is also adjustable so you can swivel it to just the right angle. This is even better than a computer with a built in camera where you have to adjust the position of your body to fit the camera. With this camera I can lounge in whatever comfortable position I choose and then set the camera angle. If you are more a desk person, you could opt to set the camera on the desk and angle it towards you. Love it!

they're useful in the dark

I was looking for something reasonably priced and basically functional when I purchased this product, and I can say that it delivered in that regard. It was what I needed for video chatting. Nothing fancy, no HD resolution.

It's very important to know that there isn't actually a "night vision" setting: that refers to a set of very bright LED lights on either side of the camera. I mean, they're useful in the dark, so that's not too bad. I tend to shift around a lot with my laptop, as I primarily use it on my bed, and in that area, the camera's really not ideal. It was nigh impossible for me to get it to stay in one place on top of the monitor using the clip: the slightest shift would set it askew. It was very hard to get it at an even angle even when I wasn't moving or was sitting at a table properly.

Ultimately, serviceable if you're not in for a lot of fancy functions. It works decently and captures video. Which is all I really wanted for the price!

I'm using it on a 2005 Compaq Presario with Windows XP SP2 for Skype and Facebook.

Picture quality is decent. There is a little bit of graininess and choppiness, but not to distortion. What did you expect for $8? LED lights are worthless in the presence of other light, but in a dark room, better than nothing.
The sharpness adjustment on the lens frame is important, and it does what it is supposed to do.
The camera is extremely light, and it is kind of annoying that the cord can move the camera around accidentally. This problem is an easy one to fix, however.
Just this past week, we used the webcam to videoconference from Honduras to the US via skype with some missionaries. The image was played on a 12X12 foot projector screen. I've been told that the image quality looked normal. At $8 a pop, we could send one to every missionary our church supports and not break the bank.

Unreliable Camera, Different than advertised

I thought the price was great. Only $4.37! This webcam worked fine the first time I plugged it in. I was up and running with video chat working. This camera was advertised to have "night vision", which means infrared LEDs which are not visible to the human eye. It does not have this at all. It has 6 bright regular light LEDs and in darkness it cannot see at all without these bright lights. Night vision my foot. Second, if you want to use this camera on multiple computers or unplug it from time to time, you will be disappointed. If you unplug the webcam from the computer, it will not work when you plug it back into the USB. Windows won't even know you plugged it in! I tested this on 2 different computers and the same problem happened on both. Leaving it unplugged for a few hours seems to fix this problem, as plugging it in after that time is usually successful. But every time you unplug this camera from your computer, you will be in a world of pain. There are no instructions or help included, and I couldn't find any help online. There is a button on top of the camera that does absolutely nothing. I pressed it. Nothing happened. No clue what it's supposed to do. I am returning this and spending about $30 on a "real" webcam from Logitech. It is possible that my camera is defective. I don't have the patience to try a replacement and find out. A webcam is not worth this much trouble.
