Humanity Is Destroying Itself, What's One Cop To Do?

I have seen much criticism of this film due to the fact that this was loosely based on the classic overpopulation novel, "Make Room! Make Room!", but was not absolutely faithful to the literature and took the plot in a different direction. Still, I believe that in its own right, this is a worthy motion picture.

In the near future, overpopulation and poverty has broken American society down to a crawl. There are 40 million people living in New York, and only enough jobs and space for half of them. Thorne is lucky because he has a job as a police officer, food (although not what we would call food), and an actual apartment in which he legally lives, though he has to share it with his police assigned researcher, the "Book" Saul. Most of the people in his building actually sleep on the floors outside of the apartments and on the stairs.

When a high ranking corporate executive is murdered, Thorne is assigned the investigation. Immediately he is overwhelmed by the "luxury" of the dead man's apartment and by his living piece of "furniture", a beautiful young woman named Shirl (she comes with the apartment - but some pieces are personal). And very soon, people are following him, threatening him, and putting pressure on the police to DROP THIS CASE. But why? While Thorne is self-serving and an opportunist (who wouldn't be in this nightmare world?), he still has a conscience, and he feels deeply that he and Saul cannot just quit. Then he uncovers a record of operations of the dead executive's corporation that should not exist, and the pieces of an ugly puzzle start to come together. Humanity has pushed itself beyond the brink; there are too many people, too many mouths, not enough food, and the environment is shot to hell.

Aside from the riveting story of Man's self-destruction, this film is made very well, acted very well, and a treat for the eyes as both a dystopian nightmare and for the luxurious escape that some people can afford. It is something that you will want to watch more than once.

A Stunningly Grim Science Fiction Movie

Just finished watching, along with Jeff H., "Soylent Green" released by Warner Brothers.
Based on the cult novel "Make Room, Make Room" by Harry Harrison, "Soylent Green" postulates a dying, over-populated world where the regular food we enjoy today can only be afforded by the super rich; while everybody else is feed processed food called Soylent Yellow, Soylent Blue, and Soylent Green in order to get their basic nutritional needs.
Set in the far off future of 2026, "Soylent Green" is a gritty police procedural about a detective named Thorn who is investigating the brutal murder of an executive of the company that manufactures Soylent Green.
Spoiler Alert: "Soylent Green" is not a politically correct movie. Although Jeff H. and I jokingly referred to it as "The Al Gore Movie" for its unrealistic predictions of a polluted future environment, women are treated as pieces of furniture - and are given the moniker of "Furnitures" - and exist only to satisfy the needs of their owners - men. If you're going to be offended watching this - I wouldn't recommended watching "Soylent Green."
Charlton Heston brings a thought-provoking grimy realism to Thorn that is a bit unnerving. Likewise with Edward G. Robison's portrayal of Saul - a walking encyclopedia of knowledge - who - Spoiler Alert - commits state sanctioned suicide when he inadvertently discovers what Soylent Green truly is - hint it's not plankton harvested from the dying oceans.
"Soylent Green" is a period movie that makes specific predictions based on the questionable "science" of computer modeling forecasting that presents a fascinating look at how far governments will go in order to prevent people for knowing the truth about their predicaments. Yes, this is a conspiracy movie.
Oh yes, Saul is Jewish, and there is an underground movement where Jews are the keepers of underground knowledge and are willing to die to keep what they consider dangerous knowledge secret in order to protect a lie to avoid widespread mayhem. As a Jew myself; Jeff H. is a Lutheran, I was not too comfortable with this portrayal in the movie; but there is the tradition of the Masada suicides in Judaism which were far more nobler than a fictional suicide because the fictional character of Saul couldn't live the knowledge of a dying world.
"Soylent Green" has a rather ambiguous ending. It suggests that humanity is doomed to die under the sheer weight of its own population.
Strongly Recommended.

This 1973 film warns of the ecological dangers that threaten Earth and its inhabitants. It is set in the year 2022, and stars Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Edward G. Robinson in his last film, Joseph Cotten, Paula Kelley (Night Court), Dick Van Patten, and Whit Bissell among others.

The film's message is even more relevant today. The blu ray features a trailer, two vintage documentaries, and commentary by Leigh Taylor-Young and director Richard Fleischer

Soylent Green is a sci-fi classic!

In a severely over-populated and under-resourced world, Charlton Heston plays a cop investigating the murder of one of the very few wealthy people who happens to be a director of the company who makes soylent Green which feeds half the world. The mystery is what is soylent Green? Everybody is told that it is derived naturally from our oceans, but a scientific study falls into the hands of Edward G Robinson known as "the book" as he is a researcher for Charlton Heston's character. This is the basic premise which turns out not to be terribly surprising although a horrible discovery just the same. It is very plausible story.

Great "classic" appocoliptic movie from 1973. I saw the original on "the big screen" when it came out and it was mind blowing...hey 1973..just saying. So many movies are just rip offs of another movie but this one was unique. My son(19) a big SF fan and I watched it the other day and he really enjoyed it. Because of its time the special effects are pretty low tech but the story line is great. The concept of furniture (female companionship) being part of building rent was a novel idea in those days. The movie had many other original ideas, some of which, we are still contemplating or debating now.
I think anyone who enjoys SF or appocoliptic movies would enjoy this
"flick ".
