The Sabrent USB Display adapter utilizes the very best available DisplayLink graphics chipset, the DisplayLink DL-195, which supports a full-range of resolutions up to 2048×1152/1920x1200. Great Adapter for it's intended purpose, however Please read carefully if you want to use 3+ of these "USB to DVI" adapters

I originally used the this DH88 adapter that I purchased at TigerDIrect about almost 2 years ago. I had, and still use, a late 2009 27" iMac that I needed more real estate for my Freelancing Web Development gigs. I opted on purchasing 2 Dell 2007FP LCD Monitors and 2 Sabrent DH88 adapters.

If you plan on using 1-2 of these adapters, you can continue reading. If you're like me and want as much real-estate as your computer can handle with USB connections, continue reading all the way through!

When I used both of these on my iMac they worked flawlessly, to a point. I needed to update the driver with the latest DisplayLink drivers which can be found here - [...]. This is a MUST, as the drivers that come with the adapter, in all honesty, sucks hardcore and doesn't work at all. You simply download the driver that corresponds to your OS, it'll do its thing - you reboot the computer and it should work from that point on. I really didn't have any issues at all, other than using the drivers that came with the adapter.

Fast forward 2 years (about 2 months ago) and I just had the dire-itch to expand my real estate to 5 total monitors. I bought an extra 2 Dell 2007FP off eBay, and 2 additional Sabrent DH88 adapters... this is where everything starts to break down!

I was ecstatic when my monitors arrived, along with my Quad LCD Monitor Desk Mount (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009S7IDJQ/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which is another great value! When I connected the additional Sabrent adapters everything worked, for about 10 seconds. Then randomly each of my LCD screens would start shutting off (orange ambient light instead of the green one for power). I read through multiple forums, did all the troubleshooting that I could (I used to built computers back in the day so I knew what to try and do). I really hadn't come across anyone that was in the same boat as I was - trying to connect 4 LCD monitors, via USB > DVI, to an iMac.

Initially I assumed that one of the adapters were bad, and even at one point that my LCD's were going bad. I tried different DVI cables, power cables, USB cables, USB ports, external hubs - everything you can think of to try. I spent probably about 3 days pulling out my hair trying to troubleshoot what the heck was going on. I even went and bought MORE Sabrent adapters thinking the ones I got from Amazon were bad.

At one point I had it working properly, so I started adjusting the position of my LCD's via the Display settings - and things started going haywire again. My computer would reboot on its own, it was a nightmare really. I couldn't get any work done and I was tired of spending days getting this working. I was about to call it quits even.

I forgot where I read online, but I came across someone that mentioned j5create adapters. I also remember seeing these at the store last year so I figured why not spend some more money and try it out. I first went online and read that j5create adapters would only work up to 2 with the iMac version I had. I was like "okay great, but I need 4 ADAPTERS NOT 2!". I went and bought 2 of them anyway, unplugged 2 of the Sabrents and for a second, I could hear the sound of Heaven floating across my office atmosphere.

I had 2 Sabrent DH88 adapters paired along with 2 j5create adapters into the back of my iMac and EVERYTHING WORKED as it should. I have all 4 2007FP's Dell Monitors working next to my 27" iMac late 2009 model.

I think this issue with not having 2+ Sabrent adapters working together is because of the DisplayLink drivers. Not to say the DL drivers are not good, because they are. But a lot of people are not happy because of a DL + Apple issue going on with getting more than 2 working at a time. I really haven't kept up, because at this time it's not worth my time to do so. If I had a newer iMac I could get all 4 j5create working together in harmony.

Hopefully, I helped someone by troubleshooting before-hand and saving a few days of their time. Both adapters are great and seem to work identically the same. There's no difference in quality between 1 or the other.

I'll keep this short. I have a laptop that I use at work with a dock, I was able to use one external monitor and the laptop monitor for a total of 2 screens. The problem was the resolutions were different sizes and the screens were not right next to each other. I bought this and connected it and immediately was able to have 2 external monitors next to each other with the same resolution. The graphics are great and no delay or lag in what's on the screen. I generally use the monitor this controls for my basic web browsing along with RDP (Remote Desktop) sessions. I have also watched hulu and youtube videos on the monitor this unit controls and it is smooth with no breakup or lag at all. I am very impressed. In fact now I actually have 3 monitors, my laptop, the dock one and now this one. Great item, makes my life as a Systems Administrator that much easier now that I have 2 monitors with the same resolution side by side. Highly recommend, and it's a piece of cake to get working.

The video works well, but the video driver is not stable.

I own two Sabrent USB-DH88 adapters. The first one had occasional video issues, but worked well enough (there were some coincident monitor issues as well). Anyway, for another reason I finally took it off the laptop with which I used it, and ordered the second one.

Something I noticed, both before using the first adapter for the first time, and in the interim between the time I removed the first adapter from the laptop and attached the second, is that my laptop video was rock-stable. There were NO issues at all at any time.

Since installing the Sabrent USB-DH88 (both the first and second times), the laptop video system is unstable. This usually manifests by the displays (both the internal laptop display and the attached LCD monitor) going black momentarily, then re-rendering everything. This occurs sometimes with simply dropping down a menu or resizing a window. It has resulted in a blue screen several times (again, something which did not occur before the Sabrent adapter or in the interim between the first and second adapters). I've seen this affect occur when using the Chrome browser, LibreOffice, gimp, and a variety of other common Windows apps. It's difficult for me to believe that each one of the apps I typically use somehow have the same code flaw; it's much easier to believe that the Sabrent video driver has been the common denominator when the error manifests.

I'll be purchasing more of the USB video adapters for my laptop (because they are very useful!), but I'll not purchase the Sabrent device. (Most of the adapters on the market use the DisplayLink chip, so there are many equivalent alternatives.)

Of course, the big question is whether the drivers supplied by the other manufacturers are any better, or whether Sabrent and its competitors actually use the same driver. (I'm not certain how to determine this.)

I finally decided to write this review (on another system) while waiting for my laptop to reboot after another blue-screen.

Sabrent: I really want to like your product, but you need some "serious" QA on your drivers. I might be willing to beta test your drivers on my laptop if you've made some real improvements. If, at that time, your video drivers prove to be stable, I'll be very happy to change my rating to 5 stars.

Until then, I can give your product only 2 stars (the hardware shows that it can work well, and because of that I believe that you deserve more than a single star). But, encountering the annoying BSD repeatedly is not acceptable.

Happy multi-monitor Thinkpad setup

Enables me to have a three-monitor setup--the VGA/DVI passthrough dock on some Classic Thinkpads (T&W520 and earlier) will permit only two monitors. I know some dock models will permit you a three-monitor setup, but I have only a 433710U in possession.

So far, I have:
a B156HW01 v3 installed on a T520, running natively
an HP LA2205wg serving as main desktop monitor, connected via DVI
a cheapo AOC monitor served by the USB-DH88
...all running happily together. Reading Cisco CCNA study material and comparing topologies/configurations on GNS3 has never been this easy!

I've never been happier with my setup, lol.
