Received emitters look different from advertised picture and do not work

Received emitters look different from advertised picture and do not work
I ordered these emitters to replace ones that came with my CablesToGo IR repeater that I purchased a few years ago C2G / Cables To Go 40430 Infrared (IR) Remote Control Repeater Kit (Black). The old emitters worked perfectly with the repeater. But I had to temporarily move my A/V equipment, and in trying to remove the previous emitters they came apart. I decided to purchase two pairs of these C2G emitters since they looked like a perfect match from the advertised picture. But the C2G emitters I received from Amazon looked different from the previous ones (and the advertised picture) and did not work with the repeater.See the attached picture for a comparison. The new emitters I received are the ones on top. As shown, the new emitters are more rectangular in shape. Every time an IR signal is sent, a bright red LED on the emitter lights up, which is a little distracting, but at least you know a signal is getting through. But no matter where I placed the emitters on my Comcast cable box and my Sony receiver, there was no reaction to the emitter even though the blue light on the repeater and the red light on the emitter showed activity. I tried every emitter port on the repeater, and I also tried with a second set of the same emitters I had purchased, including sticking the emitter to the boxes. But nothing worked.I thought maybe somehow my repeater had gone bad, so I ordered a new Sewell IR Blaster Sewell BlastIR SW-29311 Infrared (IR) Remote Control Receiver Kit (Black), which looks like the exact same thing as the C2G repeater except with different colors. (Maybe they are co-branded somehow?) Even the emitters look identical to what I used to have. (The Sewell emitter is the other one shown in the attached picture.) When I received the new repeater and emitters, I did a test first and plugged the Sewell emitter into the existing C2G repeater. It worked perfectly, like it used to with my old emitters. The good news then is my repeater/emitter setup is working again. The bad news is I wasted $8 on the new C2G emitters that do not work and $40 on a new Sewell IR repeater/emitters setup when all I needed was good working emitters. So this all leads me to believe there is some kind of problem with these new emitters I received from Amazon. I actually ordered from Amazon, and not some third-party, so I don't think they would be any kind of knock-off. The part number on the package matches what is shown on Amazon's site. But for some reason the emitters do not seem to be correct. It's possible C2G has changed their design, and the new ones have issues? I would caution anyone else against purchasing these if you are expecting to get what is shown, since you may have the same problem I did. Also, I should note these C2G emitters did not come with adhesive already attached to each emitter, and there was just one piece of double-sided adhesive in the bag with each pair of emitters, which is not very useful. The Sewell emitters came with a piece of adhesive already attached to each emitter plus a spare piece of adhesive for each emitter.

I have two TV's in seperate rooms, hooked to the same Charter DVR, and wanted to run the DVR from either room. This unit allows me to do that perfectly, easily, quickly.

The cables were just long enough to put the controller in one room, the receiver stuck to the bottom center of the TV and the emitter cables through the wall and slid under the DVR. The bulbs of the emitters are hemispheres, so I could just lay them on the shelf in front of the DVR's IR "eye" with the bulb facing up. They did not interfere with the normal operation of the "eye" and are very reliable.

There is NO hesitation with the signal, although I did experiment some with the placement of the receiver unit. Both TV's are in front of/next to large picture windows, and the bright light seems to interfere with the signal.

As one reviewer said, watch out for the power plug from the wall wart to the controller unit. It will plug into the "Status" connection of the controller unit (why?) and it won't work. The indicator lights on the receiver and controller flash when you press the remote, but the signal never gets through. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, but it looks like the unit quit working.

You can supposedly lengthen the cable or add an extender cable, add more flashers or more receivers.

All together, I would highly recommend this unit.

This is a great little repeater kit. I am using it to control a Sony Blu Ray disc player and a Sky decoder hidden in an armoire. The appearance of the receiver portion in my kit is different from the illustration. Instead of the IR panel shown, mine has two leds recessed into the front, might be significant to some but for me not a problem. One of the L.E.D.s by the way is a bright blue indicator that confirms IR activity when you send a command from a remote control. Installation is very simple, you mount the controller/repeater with two screws, mount the receiver (see below for more detail), plug in power and then install the repeater assemblies. These will take the most time. I put mine on the inside surface of the armoire doors approximately lined up with the IR receivers on the equipment. This worked perfectly the first time. I found all cable lengths to be generous.
If there is any weakness with this kit, it is that the receiver comes with a thin slice of adhesive tape which did not look as if it would last and no other hardware for mounting it. Additionally the adhesive tape is oriented so that you would have to mount the receiver on the front surface of an object. If you are going for stealth, it's unlikely that you will be mounting it that way. I had some double stick tape in the house so I cut a small strip and placed it on the top of the receiver and mounted it under the front edge of my LCD TV. I used a black marker to color the edge of the double stick tape. It should be noted that the standard power input is a transformer (wall wart) connected to a household outlet but the controller also has 12VDC input terminals. If you have good installation skills and some ambitions for a reasonably priced but elegant and stealthy setup, I think this kit is an excellent choice. Mine is working right now from 20 feet across the room and sensitivity and response is terrific.

I was about to return this item because it was only working intermittently when I first set everything up. Generally, it worked but sporadically it would miss certain signals and sometimes it would stop working completely for a minute or two.

I moved the repeaters inside the cabinet but didn't notice any signficant improvement. I could tell the receiver was working because the blue light would flash when I pressed a bottom on the remote.

I was about to return the device to Amazon when it occurred to me that the problem may have been that the devices inside the cabinet were getting two signals, one from the remote itself, and one from the repeater. The cabinet door where my devices were was cracked slightly open because I had not run an RCA line to my subwoofer. Thus, the line to my sub was running out the front of the cabinet and preventing the door from shutting all the way.

I did an experiment where I put the remote only a few inches away from the receiver so that the signal would only reach the receive and not the devices in my cabinet in the other corner of the room. Immediately, the remote controlled my devices flawlessly. I then removed the wire to my subwoofer so that my cabinet door would close all the way and it has worked perfectly ever since.

My conclusion is that unless your stereo devices are completely shielded from the actual signal from the remote itself, they will receive two signals and won't work properly. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ONLY SIGNAL REACHING YOUR STEREO DEVICES/COMPONENTS IS THE SIGNAL FROM THE REPEATERS. IF YOUR DEVICES ALSO RECEIVE A SIGNAL FROM THE REMOTE ITSELF, THE SIGNAL FROM THE REMOTE WILL INTERFERE WITH THE SIGNAL FROM THE REPEATERS AND IT WON'T WORK PROPERLY.

Other than this issue, the device works great and the price was right. A lot better than the $200+ devices they sell at the national electronic stores.
