about every 5 years I change my eighth story roof antenna when my 70yo coop does brick/roof maintenance. my previous antenna was a 4-bay uhf, but since channel 7(abc),11(cw),13(pbs) continue to be hi-vhf, i decided to give this 6' mixed dipole yagi a try during a rare half price sale. about 10 years ago when ATSC got started I had a 9' long lo/high-vhf/uhf, but got nervous keeping it after a few windy storms blew through my area. all my channels are WNW so the narrow width reception of this yagi was no issue. I have to get up high because I live in a valley of buildings and hills making my quad shielded RG6 run 90' worth the db loss despite being 8 miles from all the transmitters. given all my previous antenna experience from the same spot, urban dwellers may find my feedback more useful than rural. this 6' yagi is weaker at picking up stations than both my 4-bay uhf and 9' vhf/uhf antenna, but it does give you adequate reception of both. oddly the electronics in the 300:75ohm box work well at boosting the VHF signal when I used a quality 15db amplifier, but didn't do anything for increasing the UHF SVI 1 Port Cable TV/HDTV/Digital/Modem Amplifier signal levels also vary by tuner - with older ota+qam flat screen tuners picking up better than newer atsc converter boxes. on my older flat tv which has the stronger tuner i was getting 75% both VHF and UHF, with the VHF jumping to 90% only when I used in-line power amp. these results have me really worried about what's going on inside that coax box on this 6' yagi since it's odd the higher frequency UHF didn't benefit at all from amplification (while my old 4-bay UHF did benefit from an amp). but for the low price I paid - I'll live with the compromises the next 5 years. hopefully by then atsc 3.0 will be in vogue, and there will be a better array of roof antenna on the market once high-vhf will finally be abandoned - instead of just rehashing all these old atsc 1.0 designs. dear mr. winegard if you ever update this antenna, I suggest 2 important changes: use rods instead of blades which imho pick up too much wind (making my pole shake). also make the UHF reflector wings 50% longer than they are now - which should improve UHF focused reception without much bulk or wind resistance penalty.

I had been considering cutting the cord for several years. I consulted with antenna experts on a television discussion website that I wrote articles for. I wrote about technology and the film/TV market. The antenna guys lived and breather free over the air TV. What did I learn? Basically a larger antenna, placed as high as I could get it, aimed at the broadcast antennas works the best. Yes, there is a LOT of technical discussion and situations that can effect reception. Overall I knew I needed a VHT/UHF antenna mounted outside my house. There is no such thing as a "digital" or "HD" antenna. I had previously experimented with a small indoor antenna. It would pick up a couple of channels depending where I pointed it. If I turned it an inch or two I would lose those channels and pick up a different channel. Frustration! I tried another antenna in my attic. It worked slightly better but not much. For my location, about 50 miles north of Phila, I needed a good old fashioned antenna...the kind my grandparents used in the sixties. Getting to the point you want to know...did it work? Yes! I receive about 40 channels. I am able to get the major networks, two different PBS stations and sub-channels, retro TV stations, movie stations, etc, etc. A few channels are unreliable but nothing I need to have. I also pick up channels that are broadcast from the north, opposite from where the antenna is pointing. The HD channels are beautiful and stable. The digital surround sound is processed through my home theater. I am completely satisfied! Here is a tip. I had a satellite dish mounted to my house, up high. I removed the dish and mounted the antenna to the dish mounting pole. It works perfectly as a mount. If you don't have a similar mounting point, I would get the mounting kit. I used one of the existing satellite coax cables as my antenna feed since the coax was already wired into my house. You can use your cable TV cable coax the same way. What would I do next? I learned that you can use a second antenna, pointed in a different direction, to pull in more channels. The two antenna signals can be combined with an adapter (from Amazon) to a single coax cable. Consider this if you really want to get everything you can from the air. One final note. I have been told to avoid any kind of supplemental signal amplifier. The logic is the digital TV signal is either good or it is bad. You either get the channel or you don't. Amplifiers worked with old fashioned broadcast signals where you would get snow or ghosting. Check this out from an antenna manufacturer. "A mast or antenna-mounted amplifier (preamp) is used primarily to overcome the loss in the coaxial cable between the antenna and the TV set. In areas distant from TV transmitters, overcoming this loss is necessary since the signals are already weak. In areas close to TV transmitters, a preamplifier is usually not needed, and can actually cause problems as it may cause the signal levels to be too high." I would opt out of amplifiers and go for the larger antenna, mounted outside, as high as possible. May the signal be with you!

As many have mentioned, this antenna has excellent gain, but ONLY if you unfold it correctly. When I pulled it out of the box, I just snapped open the elements and was ready to put it up. I then happen to notice that the elements can be pulled open, and locked in place on EITHER side! Looking at the directions, I had unsnapped the elements in the WRONG configuration!!! And since this is paralog style, if you open the elements the wrong way, it won't perform!

So I attempted to follow the directions to see which way the elements should be locked open. Well, I had pulled 2 of them open on the wrong sides. The elements MUST be positioned according to the instructions, which are poorly worded. I compared it to the image they provided, also poor, and the image helped me somewhat better than the instructions, but correcting this mistake is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!!! The elements were already locked in place so now I had to figure out how to unlock them to move them into the correct position. This antenna was NOT designed to be folded back up once you get the elements snapped open! Bad design. Fortunately I only had 2 rear elements that needed to be swapped but it was a 15min. chore using many tools. It helps to have another person for this correction task and if you're not careful you could break the plastic locks. Engineers should have designed this to be opened only ONE WAY! But they didn't, so be very careful to open it correctly the FIRST time!

But, once you have it opened properly I found it outperformed my 4 bay UHF antenna for the UHF stations (that really shocked me), and of course VHF signal level was fantastic. VERY impressed with the signal gain of this antenna BUT, its highly directional, which is not surprising with high gain antennas. The snap on balun, which many complain about, had a bent spade coming out of the box, so I had to carefully straighten it out prior to snapping it onto to the antenna. (why wasn't this part pre-assembled????) If Ihadn't noticed that, the antenna wouldn't have worked.

The negatives on this antenna are primarily really bad mechanical engineering and quality control, and lousy directions. (Just give me a good detailed photo next time!!!) But once you get around those issues, it's a solidly built antenna that REALLY performs BETTER than the more expensive antennas!

When installing it, MAKE SURE to open the elements the correct way the FIRST time, check the balon to make sure the spade connections are straight before snapping it in, and don't just let the coax hang from the balun assembly, tape it to the mask so that there is no "pull stress" on the balun assembly and you will be very happy with this antenna's performance. I would buy it again and I would highly recommend it, with the assembly warnings I provided above.

Con esta antena mi televisor capta todos los canales disponibles en mi zona y la mayoría a una excelente calidad.

This antenna is quality built. The instructions can be confusing for assembly. Take your time and if you have a picture make sure that you refer to it. Remember that the antenna is not tuned for low band VHF. I installed this at my friend's house last weekend restoring the reception that had recently changed with the FCC repack of channels. We are on the north shore of Lake Ontario looking at the multitude of US stations south of the south shore. The rotor is not in place yet so looking in different directions isn't yet possible but when it is I expect even more stations will be received. This is a long antenna at almost 14 foot in length. It can be an armful on a tower.

Installation instructions are not the best, and i made few mistakes and had to disassemble and start all over.
First. Make sure that from the very start when sliding two half's of the antenna together, push and guide two aluminum wires into holes provided on the black plastic junction box. Once two half's of the antenna are in place it is impossible to put those wires in the box.
Second. If upper and lower U bolts and clamps don’t perfectly align, you have to reverse UHF reflectors. If not aligned, use other reflector on the top.In my case there was a 3 inch offset between U bolts. It would be impossible to mount antenna on the mast. It is best to first install upper UHF reflector and upper support boom, and check for U bolt alignment. Both UHF reflectors square tubing booms should be facing toward the antenna.
Third. seal with silicone 4 holes where aluminum wires enter plastic junction box to prevent water leaking in and ruining the pc board and components in the box. Don’t block the drain hole on the bottom. I used some silicone to glue two half's of the plastic box together because I didn’t have confidence they would stay together under the elements.
