It's a Ruler. Great for measurements and straight lines.

I hope this review will clear up some misunderstandings that you are purchasing a single (1) ruler, in one of four random jeweltoned colors. The four colors (randomly selected) apparently come in shades so if your heart is set on a royal blue or ruby red be aware you could be disappointed. The ruler I received is a rather faded blue-ish gray, nothing like the blue pictured. I understand the red can appear to be pink, the emerald green may look teal. Purple is the only color I've not read any complaints about, I guess any purple is a good purple. You may also need to know your (1) ruler is flexible, not bendable! This ruler can be flexed 10 or 15 degrees, but if you bend this ruler in half you are probably going to have 2 halves of a ruler. Just so you know, aside from breaking the ruler in half, none of the above
variables in any way cause your ruler not to function as the premier ruler that it is. No matter what color your ruler is it will still give you 100%!

If you happen to get one of the rulers that several people complain about, if your ruler has deep scratches, grooves or places where the plastic feels like sand paper please notify Amazon, they don't want you to be unhappy with your purchase or to feel you are stuck with something broken or defective. The customer service at Amazon is incredible! Tell them your problem and give them a chance to fix it.

Color choices are available, if you want to purchase one of these Westcott Jeweltone Plastic Rulers, but you don't want the Fates to determine the color you receive, you can! Check for the same item as above, but find the one that offers the ruler in purple. When you open the ad it will offer you the same 12" ruler and allow you to specify the color. The cost is slightly higher but worth it

This is a nice, flexible plastic ruler. It measures up to 12" on one edge and 300 mm/30cm on the other edge. I am satisfied with my purchase and will reorder this item if ever needed.

A really great value, but in actual use, I wish I had gotten some other rulers. While the colors are nice, they are also dark enough to make reading the numbers a little more challenging.

I think a purely clear ruler would be one better option, if you need to see through the ruler. A pure white one would be the best for visibility of the line measurements and numbers.

The markings are pretty standard. On the main edge, the half-inch mark is longer than the quarter-inch mark, which is longer than the eighth mark, which is longer than the sixteenth mark, so you can quickly glance at the ruler and know exactly what fraction of an inch you've got. (Full inch marks are the same length as half-inch ones, but since the inch marks have a number, you always know which are which.) A nice bonus on this ruler, the first inch also has thirty-secondth marks. I wouldn't want them down the whole edge (that would be cluttered), but having them on one inch of the ruler gives me the option to measure something that precisely if I ever have a reason to. So that's nice.

The marks don't start at the end of the ruler, but that's normal in this price range. (Nicer rulers, especially metal ones, often start the zero mark precisely at the end, so you can rest the end of the ruler flush against something and measure from its surface; but I've never seen a ruler this inexpensive with that feature. Personally I keep *one* nice metal ruler around and a dozen or so cheaper ones, so that I can take multiple rulers to things like VBS work days and not have to worry about losing one. This ruler falls into the cheap category.)

The metric edge has three mark lengths (cm, half-cm, and mm), which is good enough for me. (If I ever need to measure something in millimeters, I might have to stop and count marks; but since that's not something I'm ever going to do frequently, who cares?)

This ruler is translucent (i.e., you can easily see right through the plastic), so you can easily line up any of the marks on the ruler with something written on the paper underneath.

The plastic seems pretty sturdy, so I'm guessing it'll hold up well as far as that goes. It can bend a little but quickly returns to its original shape. The edge is as straight as anything I have handy to check against, so it should be good for everyday purposes. The end is rounded, though, so you won't be using it as a cheap square tool. My order just arrived today, so I don't know how the marks will hold up over time. They're printed on the underside, so it's possible to imagine that they could wear off. Time will tell. I guess at this price, if they wear off, I'll replace them.

There's a hole, just a little bigger around than a standard pen or pencil, near the zero end of the ruler, so if you want to hang several of them on a hook or nail, you can.

There's also an interrupted groove down the middle of the top face, running from the hole for about an inch and three quarters, where it stops for the printed logo of the company that makes the thing, after which the groove resumes and runs for almost eight more inches. The right half would be potentially useful for resting a pencil in so it doesn't roll across the desk, but I can't think of a use for the short bit of groove on the left of the logo, unless it's just there for decoration or symmetry.

At $1.48 each, these aren't the very cheapest rulers available. You can, for example, get a pack of four BAZIC rulers for $3.23 as I write this, which comes to a little more than eighty cents each. However, $1.48 is also not an unreasonable price, and this ruler has a couple of features (already mentioned above) that the BAZIC ones are missing. Also, if you only need one ruler, $1.48 is less than $3.23.

One caveat about this ruler (which the product description does imply, if you're paying attention) is that you don't know which color you're going to get until it arrives. I spent the big bucks ($4.44) and bought three of them, and it just happens they're all purple, which is fine with me. It's a nice looking purple too; I'm not sure the photo fully does it justice. I don't happen to know if the four colors pictured are the only possible colors. That would be my first guess as to why the picture shows four (the product title and description are pretty clear that it's one ruler); but I'm kind of guessing there. Anyway, your color may vary.

Oh, and the ruler is translucent and the marks black, so if you happen to need to measure black paper (or black felt for that matter) on a regular basis for some reason, you may want to get a different ruler for that.
