Organic Virgin coconut oil, without the coconut taste
So I have been hearing all the rage over coconut oil. and how it's a healthy fat. So I decided to try it. Now I like coconut on some things, but to have something battered in coconut like coconut shrimp where you can really taste the coconut I don't care for. So yes for this reason I was a bit skeptical about my food having a strong coconut taste. Well, I have tried it, and no you do not have your food all tasting like coconut! I've used it to saute vegetables and also for main dishes. I made a mexican dish called arroz con pollo, which is chicken and rice. I used the coconut oil to fry my rice, which it browned up the same as if I was using my normal olive oil. Now while I am cooking with the coconut oil, it does smell like strong coconut. After serving the dish I was expecting either my husband or the kids to say "why does it taste different" or "Did you put coconut in there?" But they never said anything about it tasting like coconut! After dinner I asked my husband if he didn't notice anything different! He said no, that the food was good. The coconut oil itself was easy to use. It reminds me of shortening but not so solid. More like a soft solid. You just scoop a little out and put in heated pan. Coconut oil isn't just for cooking either. It can also be used on hair and skin, making both softer. I myself will mainly be using this coconut oil for cooking and using in recipes. This is a twin pack so you could use one just for cooking and the other for experimenting with, if you want to try it for on your hair and skin. The coconut oil is easy to use for cooking and you would use it like you do any other oil. I normally use olive oil but this one is good too and it's also organic. I will definitely be looking into buying some more when I run out. I did receive this item in exchange for my honest unbiased review.
This is a good deal for the price. A jar of coconut oil at my local grocery store is $10. So two jars for $15 is a great savings. I wanted two jars so I could have one to cook with/eat and one to use for the body. Coconut oil in itself is a solid at room temperature. It becomes a liquid at 76 degrees. When it comes shipped to you, it will likely be a solid, especially if it is fall or winter and you live in the north. I bought this because it is organic and cold pressed.
Coconut oil is a great product. I started reading about it when my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. There is information out there that says it can help delay or reverse Alzheimer's. Do your own research on that if you have a family member with Alzheimer's. I would like to prevent the chance of getting Alzheimer's so this will be a product that will be in my house for years to come.
Your body does not metabolize coconut oil like it does other oils. Calorie-for-calorie, it is not the same as eating a tablespoon of olive or vegetable oil. It goes straight to your live and goes where needed, it is not stored as fat to turn into fat. Sometimes I just eat a tablespoon of the oil in the morning - it makes me feel full so I eat less during the day, and makes gives me some energy. The taste of the product is pleasant. You have to get used to downing the oil - some people may have issues with the texture of eating it straight. If you add it to a smoothie that has ice in it, it will curdle...which can also cause texture issues. So if you add it to a smoothie, add it before adding anything cold and mixing it. I have added a little chocolate to a tablespoon of oil, froze and then eaten it. It is pretty good, and the texture is better than just downing it.
For the body, coconut oil is great for your hair. You need to put it in your hair, let it sit for 30 minutes and then wash it twice to get all the oil out of it. You could cover your hair with a cap and then heat the hair on low for 15 minutes to speed up the process. It will make your hair smooth and healthier. It needs to sit on your head for 30 minutes so it can have time to open the cuticle and penetrate the cuticle. Since I started using coconut oil in my hair, my hair is much smoother, shinier and healthier.
I also put coconut oil on my body after coming out of the shower. I used to use a popular yellow face cream that is a 'drink for your skin', but find that I much prefer the coconut oil to moisturize my face and body.
It is also a good natural lubricant in the bedroom. :D
Instead of using vegetable or olive oil when popping your popcorn, use coconut oil instead. The oil is much healthier for you, and you don't really taste the coconut. I much prefer the flavor of the coconut oil. Add a little salt and you are good to go.
I have bought the brand at my local grocery store, and it is also organic and cold-pressed - I don't notice much difference between the two as far as flavor or quality. I think both are a good product. Just be sure to buy coconut oil that is organic and cold-pressed when buying coconut oil. I think this is a great brand.
As far as ordering and shipping - ordering was easy, it shipped in its own box and came to me the next day. I was very satisfied with that process.
I've tried many brands but keep coming back to Nutiva as my go-to coconut oil. The flavor is exceptional & the quality consistent. Works all around for my needs, both as a food & cosmetic purposes. It has a clean coconut flavor & delicious scent. Nutiva produces a refined version if you're looking for a coconut oil that's scentless.
6-115 Here's another note added to my review. Nutiva has changed the design of their jars and I hate it. I don't just use coconut oil for cooking, I also use it as a moisturizer. I had a jar sitting beside my sink and every evening I would wash my face and moisturize with this. Well now the jar is taller with a narrower opening. On top of that the edge of the inside rim is somewhat "sharp". I stuck my hand in after the jar was about half empty and got a little cut. It's like having a jar of moisturizer sitting there. You wouldn't scoop out how ever much moisturizer you wanted to use with a spoon. You just scoop what you want out with your fingers. You can't do that any more. Nutiva...PLEASE go back to the old jar design. Customers, use a spoon to scoop the coconut oil out from now on.
Just a note to my existing review below. There was a piece of day old Rosemary Bread on the counter. I remembered so many people saying this tastes good on bread so I decided to try it. I admit I stood by my the garbage pail expecting to throw the piece of bread with coconut oil spread on it away. I love this stuff but didn't think I'd go so far as to eat it straight out of the jar. Wow. It had a nice smooth buttery taste. Ate it all. By the way, Subscribe and Save is the way to go. Doing it for a year now. Very satisfied with the service.
Besides the cooking benefits of coconut oil I've discovered other benefits that make this a must have in my house. For more years than I can remember I had a wart on one of my fingers. It would come and go but finally got to the point that when it flared up it would split, bleed, and get infected. It was getting very hard to keep under control so had decided that I would finally have to go to a specialist and have it removed. The last time I had an episode with it I decided to try one last thing...coconut oil. I had read coconut oil had anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Within 2 days the infection had started to clear up. In less than 10 days the wart had shrunk to practically nothing. It's been months now. I use coconut oil on my hands every day...several times a day and haven't had a single new flair up. After dealing with this for more than 15 years, I can barely feel where the wart was. I've used coconut oil on burns, cold sores, and callused feet (smooth as can be now). It's also wonderful for keeping my gray hair very soft and manageable. I had read an article about "oil pulling" and tried it with coconut oil. I won't go into that here. Just go to Bing or EHow and check it out. It has really improved my oral health. The articles I read suggested oil pulling with sesame oil but I used coconut oil because I already had had proof of it's anti-bacterial qualities. This is a product I wouldn't be without now.
