Tarot of the Deviant Moon was created using various forms of photographic manipulation. Each card starts with a complete drawing. The work is scanned into the computer where I apply various photographic textures. Nineteenth century tombstones provide most of the clothes worn by the citizens of the Deviant Moon. I bent, twisted, and reformed my photos to become capes, boots, hats and trim. One of the best parts of creating the deck was “hunting” for specific textures as I respectfully tiptoed around the graveyards of eastern Long Island, N.Y. Background buildings were created with photographs I took from a local abandoned insane asylum. Rotted doors, windows and walls became castles, factories and cities.

My character stylization was influenced by ancient Greek art, yet I gave them a slightly abstracted twist. I chose to draw them in a flat, playing card style, rendering them with heavy light and shadows. The figures were then placed in a shallow background.

As I worked, different styles emerged, and before long the characters evolved into the moon-faced beings seen in the cards.

Symbolism for the deck comes from childhood dreams and imagination that carried itself into my adult world. I have always seen the melancholy side of life and have sought to express my visions through the characters I create. The moon has always been a psychic friend to me. As the sentinel of the night, it feeds my dreams and casts a strange glow on the way I see the colors of reality.

Nothing has had a greater influence over my art then the tarot itself. I first discovered the tarot at the age of nine. I was captivated by the unique characters I saw on each card and studied the artwork intensely. My favorites were the old 19th century and medieval decks. While my classmates where drawing what children normally do, I was busy making my own little pictures of the fool or the magician. Over the years I have made many attempts to create my own deck, but never completed more then a few cards each time. I held the ideas of my early random creations and revitalized them here in the Deviant Moon.

Physically, this deck has taken over three years to complete, although it is at least thirty years in the making. It is not only a testament to my art, but a record of my life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wrong numbers on cards
By noeli on October 5, 2022
Love this cards also the design it has The only problem I have is that the order of numbers on this cards are wrong. I notice it a little too late to send them back and get a placement. Other then that I have no problems. Probably will get another set hoping they are fine

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intuitive, Beautiful, and Ethereal Deck
By HRS on July 16, 2020
I sat on this deck for a couple months before committing the time to giving it a proper test drive. I had looked through each card the moment it arrived back in May, but I hadn't actually used it until this week. First of all, the artwork is stunning and it resonates on a very visceral level with me. Art, aesthetics, and symbolism are subjective, so your mileage may vary on this point. For me, the images are intuitive and speak to something deep inside me. I absolutely love the artwork. I have a lot of decks and have been reading tarot for over forty years now, and I have plenty of decks that just don't work for me. I do a reading or pull a card and the results are just random and kind of meh. THIS deck, though, is uncanny. And again, that may be the symbolism and the imagery speaking so loudly, but I find myself constantly drawing cards to see what comes up. As a personal deck, Deviant Moon is in the top two decks that I prefer for my own use (the other being the Medieval Scapini, which has been my go-to for almost thirty years). The booklet's interpretation of the cards is wonderfully nuanced, as well. The printing of the images is flawless. So, it's beautiful, intuitive, amazing in its personal connection (to me, again ymmv).

Now for the downside: The box is utter crap, which is kind of surprising for US Games. The cardstock used to make it is exceptionally thin and the top flap ripped the first time I opened it. The box is a bit large for the cards, so the box will crush in places, which means it won't stay closed and I have picked up the box only to have the cards drop out of the bottom more than once. Do yourself a favor and replace the stock box with a bag or custom box ASAP. The cards themselves are on very thin stock, which isn't a terrible thing, as it makes for easier shuffling, but I will be curious to see if this affects the overall longevity of the deck (especially since it looks like it will be getting a lot of use). Also, the cards are a little long and if you have little hands like me, you may find them hard to handle. I have similar problems with the Scapini deck, but I think of it as a good way to stretch and exercise my fingers. Honestly, the quality of the card stock and the size of the cards are things that are easy to get used to. The box is garbage. And these are honestly the only bad things I can think of about this deck.

If the imagery in the posted images appeals to you, then you will love this deck. I can't recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Artwork!
By Brook McElmurry on February 20, 2022
I would have given this deck a solid 5 stars if the booklet & box was well made. They’re rather flimsy & not made to last. I may end up buying a nice box to store the cards in.

The artwork itself is brilliant! It’s rich with symbolism, which I love! These cards are helping me to better read using my intuition & not just relying on the little booklet for the card interpretations. The imagery is close enough to the RWS system for a beginner.

The card stock is a bit on the thinner side, but not bad. I actually love the way they feel & they shuffle very well. They’re a nice semi gloss finish. This deck is the borderless edition & I might just have to purchase the other one available with borders. The borders will hide all the little blemishes on the edges that occur naturally from shuffling over time. But I love the look of these cards without the borders.

Bottom line is I highly recommend The Deviant Moon Tarot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sets free the imagination

This is a great deck. What I like about decks like these (and it’s rare I get this) is that it allows your imagination to just run away. Which, for me, is what reading tarot is all about. Ditch those meanings you read in the booklets and just say what you see going on! This deck makes that more effortless, as the scenes are full of characters who have unique personalities. Each card gives you a sense of what’s going on. These cards are more humorous than scary. But that’s just down to personal preference, I don’t scare easily, in fact the creepier the better for me haha.

The card stock is nice but again it’s personsl preference here they are nice and smooth and I like the more narrow taller cards, rather than the fat wider ones. The Deviant moon borderless edition shuffles really nicely.

Now the court cards, every readers nemesis! As you can see from my uploaded images, each court card has a personality, which is exactly what you need in a good deck. For example. I always associate the king of pentacles/coins as being rather pompous and greedy, and he certainly comes across this way in the deviant moon deck. The Cup family are imaginative, creative and spiritual beings, so this comes across with their jolly loving expressions and weird scenes. With the court cards I either associate them as the situation, client or people in their life. But that’s how you should read EVERY card. No card had one meaning. Just say the first thing that comes into your head. That’s the way your intuition works. And I’m sure this deck will help you out there. If you turn the queen of swords and your first impressions are “wow this lady looks problematic and a like she’s always geared up for an argument/fight” then say this. Chances are your client will instantly indentify this with someone they know. That’s all I do.

Happy reading with this brilliantly designed tarot deck. It’s fun, mysterious, scary for some but in an intriguing way. It just makes you want to see more.
