Product Description
Welcome to Rapture, a city where opportunity awaits those brave enough to grasp it. A city where the artist need not fear the censor. Where the scientist is not bound by petty morality. Where the great are not held back by the weak. And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well. Bioshock - one of the greatest games of all time - is now on the Mac. Set in an alternate 1960, Bioshock places you in the middle of Rapture an underwater utopia gone very badly wrong. Caught between powerful forces, and hunted down by genetically modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, you have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. With a provocative and intelligent storyline this is a game that is alternately beautiful, thrilling, funny and frightening and always very involving. An experience that makes you think while you play.

BioShock is quite simply a masterpiece. The intro itself is breathtaking; the second the curtain is drawn back on the underwater city of Rapture, you won't be able to look away. The rest of the game maintains that same level of graphical fidelity, always making you stop and appreciate the world that's been created here for you. But the visuals aren't the only thing that set it apart. BioShock's story, both the narrative itself and the backstory provided, are detailed and atmospheric. The iconic twist will probably have been spoiled for you by the time you play this, but that doesn't detract from its impact in any way. Even on repeated playthroughs, the climactic confrontation forces you to re-evaluate your experience. Actually stopping in a video game is rare, and I was oh so happy to do so. Sure, the third act drags a little, but the game ends on a proper resolution, making it feel start-to-finish like a complete story.
In terms of gameplay, BioShock feels fresh and original, even now, nearly 5 years after the original release. In fact, I hesitate to even call it a shooter game. Guns do factor in to many confrontations, but I found myself more drawn to the unconventional weapons: chemical launchers, a crossbow, a wrench, etc. The use of new types of ammo and the isolated but useful upgrade stations keep the gunplay fresh, and ammo scarcity certainly encourages you to mix up your play style.
But, of course, the main draw here is plasmids. Explained in-game as genetic modifications, plasmids allow you to harness the elements (lightning, fire, ice) and more (telekinesis, security hacking) to fight off your enemies. The options available, as well as the possibilities for upgrades, make each playthrough unique and always keep firefights exciting.
Lastly, a few distinct elements make the gameplay experience complete. The choice to harvest (kill) or heal Little Sisters adds a moral dimension which, while not incredibly in-depth, certainly adds dramatic weight. The levels themselves are fun to explore and expansive. The versatile hacking systems allows a freedom to go in guns blazing or hold back and strategize. And the endlessly customizable gene tonics allow you to tailor your abilities to what you want out of the game.
I highly recommend this game. If you can play it, you should. It is truly a game that can't be missed.
As for the people with download issues, I live in an apartment building with terrible internet speed and BioShock downloaded in 2 1/2 hours for me. I downloaded Borderlands GOTY as well, but this downloaded much faster.
As for the game itself, it's legendary of course. Just Google it. There's no way any gamer, serious or recreational, would ever want to miss a captivating story like this. Definite +5 game ever, up there with Half Life 2, Uncharted 2, and others. So glad it's available for Mac! Sadly Steam doesn't offer the Mac version for the first two BioShocks, but thank God Amazon does!
So, it was with some trepidation that I popped Bioshock into my Mac, after all these years of waiting for it to be ported to this platform.
Bottom line: Bioshock isn't the usual tired FPS/survival horror retread. It is atmospheric, exhilarating, creepy, and deserves all of its accolades as a ground-breaking gaming landmark. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to experience one of the most enthralling games of the last decade.
In terms of performance, by the way, this game runs exceptionally-well on my 27" iMac (3 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4670+256 MB VRAM) on Snow Leopard in the game's default modes. Cranking up the resolution to the maximum screen resolution (2560x1440) and graphics details maxed out on all possible settings (shadows, water, etc) does result in a some choppiness. It's playable in that mode, but things get hairy in melee encounters with multiple splicers attacking simultaneously. For the best performance on a display this size, dropping the resolution and graphical options down a tick or two will improve display smoothness.
All in all, I'd give this game the highest rating I've ever given a game. Now, on to Bioshock 2!
