This was one of those shows where you were emotionally sad when it ended... sad because it ended... and sad because of all the people you know that you WISH could have seen it with you. It was truly magical... and every bit as good as the best actual KISS concerts you have ever seen. Instead of the big stage and pyro... strip that away and add musical precision that was breathtaking... (and considerably greater than KISS has ever accomplished live as a band... just speaking the truth). Of all the KISS members in history.... only Eric Singer and Paul could have truly hung with the musical abilities of this band... which, again, is not meant as a knock on KISS... more as a nod to the incredible work of the Rockstar band that backed Paul... they made it twice as exciting as if it were just a Paul solo tour without them. Paul made the perfect choice by getting them to go out with him... and if possible, I think he should do it again sometime... they were amazing together. One other note: some fans found Paul's Live to Win CD a little lackluster... but, when this band hits the stage to the title track... it is as powerful as any of the greatest KISS songs. This show was part of a very small set (out of hundreds) for me personally: one of the greatest concerts I have ever witnessed. If you are a KISS fan, you MUST own this. If you are a hard rock fan who isnt much of a KISS fan, you will be surprised by how much you love this. If you just loved the Rockstar band... you will love this. I bet even people who do not like harder rocking things would find this enjoyable. This show/DVD is a gift to everyone!
In recent years, KISS has taken a lot of deserved criticism for not creating new music, and they have essentially become their own tribute band. It's ironic that as dedicated as the band's fans are, they can be just as critical and demanding.
In 2004, Gene Simmons released a solo album that flopped, to put it nicely. I have read that it sold approximately 25,000 copies worldwide. Ouch. One of the reasons that album performed so poorly is because Gene didn't tour to promote it. He thought the album would sell based on the fact that he is, well, Gene Simmons.
Two years later, Paul Stanley released his first solo album in 28 years. Unlike Gene, he toured to promote it, and was also wise enough to document it. Quite simply, Paul rocked the joint. Paul has always gotten it; it was always about the music for him, and not the showmanship.
Paul knows his audience. He knows that the die-hards would be the ones showing up at his solo shows, and that they don't want to hear strictly a KISS setlist; they want to hear songs from his current and past solo work, along with some KISS chestnuts. He didn't disappoint.
I caught opening night in Atlanta. For me personally, his playing of "A Million to One" and "Got to Choose" -- especially back-to-back -- were worth the price of the ticket alone. It's also quite awe-inspiring to listen to 3000 KISS fans sing along loudly to every word of nearly every song. In some instances, even drowning out the band (who, for the record, was the house band from the TV show 'Rockstar').
Vocally, Paul was in top form. He sounded like 1976, not what might be expected in 2006. He also seemed to be having a genuine measure of fun on stage, and just enjoyed playing the music. It has to be liberating to be able to do what you want to do, musically, and not do what being a member of KISS dictates that you have to do. I hope he doesn't wait another 28 years to do it all again.
Nobody listens to KISS for lyrical depth or musical groundbreaking; people listen to KISS because the band wrote great songs with great hooks, and they're just fun. This was the most fun I've had at a concert for a while.
Long live Paul Stanley.
