be healthy. When my Christmas holidays started, I really had no reason to consume this black and bitter broth at all - I had no deadlines, no appointments, basically I was not exposed to any form of stress at all and could technically sleep and relax as long as I want during the day.
Going Cold Turkey
Thus, my plan was to simply stop coffee for a while and switch to the healthier alternative: tea. However, this task was much more difficult to achieve than I initially thought. On my first day, I was barely able to withstand this strong craving for coffee for a few hours in the morning, and eventually I gave in and turned on the coffee maker.
The second day, I unplugged my coffee machine and buried it deep in one of my cabinets in order to make it much more of a hassle to give in my craving. I tell you what happened: I didn't brew any coffee that day until early evening, but at the cost of severe headaches and pronounced fatigue. I ended up at the Starbucks Drive-Thru after when I drove home.
At this point I started wondering: Why is it so hard to live just one single day without a cup of coffee? I am perfectly fine if I don't have my daily glass of orange juice, but without getting my cup(s) of coffee, I feel like I am on heavy drug withdrawal.
Curious as I was, I did some initial research on the internet where I stumbled upon a book called "Caffeine Blues - Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America's #1 Drug" from Stephen Cherniske ever so often. After some more online search I read that the author is a recognized biochemist and nutritionist, who taught at universities, and has about 35 years of clinical and research experiences.
At this point, I was more than determined to read more about this addictive drug called caffeine. Thus, I got the eBook version of this 451-page long volume and started reading...
Caffeine Blues - Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America's #1 Drug
I devoured this book within a few days, because it was written in an incredibly accessible way, and furthermore, it was exceptionally thrilling for a non-fiction book. But more importantly, Steven Cherniske, in best research manner, conducts hundreds to thousands of research papers and studies (all references are listed in the appendix) to back up his points and claims.
I think I understate his case when I say his book is creepy; creepy in a positive way. Stephen's book is just eye-opening, and I am so glad that I rather read it sooner than later. While I was engulfing page by page, I was feeling more and more like a amphetamine-addicted rock star who was living just on the edge. In fact, I was just an innocent coffee drinker, just like everyone else on this planet - at least this is what I thought.
Stephen Cherniske explains why caffeine is so effective, and it's dangers and harmful effects on body and mind - from the increased release of stress hormones to the constriction of arteries, and eventually dangerous risks of heart attacks and strokes. He mentions the hidden dangers of the high caffeine dosages in soft drinks and other food, and outlines nasty political campaigns promoting the caffeine business.
Fortunately, the book just gives you the feel of the gloomy future of being caffeine-free. In the last chapters you get extensive advises and ideas for alternatives. The book ends with his so-called "Off The Bean" program, which will eventually help you to become caffeine-free more smoothly than I did with my "cold turkey" approach, which will hopefully help you to get around the initial torture of headaches.
According to the author, the complete "withdrawal" from caffeine takes about 3 weeks, and another 6 weeks until you will feel the positive effects. I am in week 2 now, but I already lost my craving for caffeine in any form: let it be coffee, soft drinks, etc.
I think I have already beaten this stress-fatique-disease spiral, and I am on my way towards a healthier 2013!

This book was even written before the explosion of energy drinks and Starbucks like drinks considering he mainly address regular coffee and sodas. Caffeine has become even a much bigger issue since the time of this books writing. Also, this book never feels dated. All the information is so relevant today.
After kicking my caffeine habit, my muscles feel so much more relaxed in my back and shoulders. I weirdly experienced anxiety three nights, which had never happened before and pain in my feet, but it’s gone now. And of course I had some headaches which are gone now as well. I can now wake up refreshed and sleep at 10pm easily. 10pm-6am is amazing and gives me so much time to be productive. I have a newborn son and I don’t want to waste this time lost in brain fog and sleeping as he grows older. I don’t plan on returning to caffeine in any capacity in the future. Thank you
Every thing else in terms of diet I could say "no" to but not caffeine. For decades. I started in high school and didn't stop.
I didn't realize it at the time but around 30 I had adrenal fatigue and it showed. In college I was experiencing crushing afternoon energy crashes.
I stopped taking coffee a long time ago but replaced it with green tea. Sure it's more mild but I was still getting effects.
Around 48 I started noticing funny things with my blood sugar. I also noticed the stress on my urinary tract. I was getting tired of the severe afternoon crashes that effected how much I got done in a day.
Then I learned about adrenal fatigue and how healthy adrenals are critical to a healthy menopause, I knew I had to rebuild my adrenals and give them a break. Part of that break was cutting out caffeine or almost to zero.
Now I am 50. I now only have decaf green in the morning...just one or two. Like 5-10 grams of caffeine compared to much more in the past. I am so much happier. I notice if I sleep well I don't even need any caffeine. My energy levels are smoother, my adrenals are getting healthier, I am not stressing my bladder like before, am I am no longer having blood sugar episodes. I am not losing water like before and I know I am having a healthy pre menopause. Caffeine is not good for menopausel women as it effects the hormones. In fact caffeine effects the whole hormonal system. Your life is in your hormones! I wanted a functioning hormone system so I finally gave it up. I am so glad I gave it up and wish I did it much earlier.
One thing I really regret is all those years of caffeine depleted my minerals. I didn't know this. I am sure I could have lived a more vibrant healthy life had I let go of caffeine earlier on.
I am now feeling a natural energy and it's so much more enjoyable than an artificial one. I use nutrition, ginseng, deep breathing to now enhance my energy than caffeine. My adrenals are probably still healing but it feels so good to just be natural.
I am still shocked how society won't see the damage it does. There are doctors who refuse to see the effects. There is no one in my life who is interested in the effects or believes it. So sad. They do not know how they are stressing their health!
Natural energy is so much more enjoyable that the artificial energy that just depletes you later.

So much essential information that can't be found anywhere and is saving people's health and life.
Caffeine is not an Energy drink but a poison that attacks the adrenal glands and puts the body in a state of emergency. A fix is not a health drink. It's a drug addiction.
It blocks over 50% of blood to frontal lobe, where you think. Lowers your IQ. Yikes.
Bought over $35 worth of books but did not get free Shipping. Can't find any contacts to get help. HELP
