Matt Groening’s sci-fi adventure/comedy series Futurama comes to a typically absurd close with In the Wild Green Yonder, the fourth in a series of direct-to-DVD series that followed in the wake of the animated series’ cancellation in 2003. Yonder keeps in the kitchen-sink tradition of the show and features by cramming as many pop culture references as possible into its already convoluted plotline, from cameos by Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane and Snoop Dogg to riffs on eco-terrorism, The View and television poker tournaments. All are interwoven into the feature’s main storylines, which concern Fry’s sudden ability to read minds, a massive, environmentally unfriendly rebuild of Mars Vegas by Amy’s parents, and Leela’s admission into a group of radical eco-minded protestors who aim to bring that project to a halt. And if that’s not enough, there’s a threat to the universe as a whole from the Dark Ones, and the summation of various character arcs, including the long-simmering relationship between Fry and Leela. Obviously, In the Wild Green Yonder isn’t the place to start for first-time Futurama visitors; its immense cast of characters--which in one scene, swell to over 250 from the show’s entire network run and all of the features--and elaborate (if ridiculous) mythology will most likely leave most newcomers scratching their heads. Longtime fans, however, will appreciate the return of so many favorite personalities, including Zapp Brannigan and the mysterious No. 9, as well as the wrap-up of sorts provided by the conclusion (although, in typical fashion, it leaves room for a series return or another feature). The humor is spotty in places--Bender’s Big Game remains the best blend of comedy and storyline of the four features--but there are enough laughs to keep die-hards happy. The wealth of special features should accomplish that goal as well; the audio commentary by Groening, executive producer David X. Cohen, and members of the cast and production team is lively and full of anecdotes, while making-of featurettes provide a tour of the Futurama production offices, a gander at guest star Penn Jillette recording his cameo, and tips on drawing various characters. The most offbeat and amusing extras are faux PSAs from Bender and Zapp Brannigan (on movie theater etiquette and romance, respectively), and the producers’ field trip to a zero gravity simulator. --Paul Gaita

Great show, great extras, I really hope they keep making them like this. When I think back to a lot of other 30-minute TV shows that tried to make something feature length, it generally just falls flat (coughsimpsonscough) but the Futurama writers know their stuff and all of these post-network releases have been awesome. I will gladly pay-to-play for as long as they keep making them.
Although I have to say, I'd also like to see them try something like this: Drop the extras, go back to a 30 minute format and release the episodes straight to Amazon Unbox or iTunes for a couple bucks per episode and see how that sells. I would eat something like that UP. You could still collect them and release them in DVD format with commentary later on but I could really go for some more frequent Futurama.
I like it either way, I'm just sayin', there are other ways to get my money if the feature-length idea ever loses steam.
(Edit: Oh, I have to say I was kind of disappointed when they had literally the entire cast for every audio commentary on every Fururama DVD EXCEPT Lauren Tom (Amy). She's always missing from the extras/commentary. In this DVD, there is an entire extra feature that consists of just her. We find out that she is, in fact, responsible for the entire creation of the show... er, sort of.)
This is the 4th, and final, full length movie made during the time frame after Futurama was originally cancelled but before it was revived on Comedy Central.
There are some connections between the series and the other movies, but you can watch it individually and enjoy it. It might take a little while to get to know the characters, but even if you are not familiar with the characters, the jokes are still really good.
There are plenty of fresh jokes in 'Into the Wild Green Yonder' as well as plenty of fresh ideas, it is just that in my opinion the last Movie; 'Benders Game' was a little more creative and had a bit stronger movie concept then this final episode. This is not to say that this final episode is weak in any form, If I were to rate these four movies I would rate this last one and Benders Game as the two best of the four1
But I guess that if one is to think about how you would end a show like this, there are so many 'easy routes to end it and just call it a day with out putting too much work into the last of the four, like so many other television shows do. The makers of Futurama did do an above average job at closing things out. (Basically they didn't dwell on the 'sappy' ending that it could have been and they didn't do what is know known as the 'Saprano's' style ending!). The story line is very creative and like always a bit reflective on humanity and our overall existence, which may fit into many people's idea of our inevitable course of being. The creators at Futurama have an interesting way of looking at divergent viewpoints when it comes to politics and humanity. They have the ability and use it with out being preachy or self righteous about these things. And I find it very interesting the way they did choose to end it. With out trying to give too much away it is a bit biblical in a way that it seems that only Futurama can do.
As a fan who owns all of the television episodes and has watched them more times then I care to remember, (Thanks to an Archos 605, without which I have no idea how I have ever flown on a plane or even watched late night videos w/o bothering anyone before?) I have also watched all of the Movies as well as own them I can say that I am sad to see a creative show like this fade into television history! I will say that if you have the chance to take a look at the extra s in some of the movies, there are some very interesting pieces well worth watching, especially if you are like me and a bit geeky!
I will say that if you find the show even a bit interesting the movies are definitely worth owning in your collection. As I am sure you will find yourself watching these movies more then one time and in doing you will let yourself in on the inside jokes as well as some of the more creative aspects of the show.
The artwork pops, the computer animation is top notch and the jokes kept me entertained and enthralled. The quality of the picture was outstanding. It's like seeing a brand new cartoon.

And despite the fact that some seem to have been disappointed with the quality of the first three you'll doubtless have brought them and will buy this anyway, so you'll know that it's four episodes of twenty two minutes duration edited together into one long movie.
In this one fry gains the ability to read minds and falls in with a secret sect. Amy's parents wreak ecological havoc in the quest to build bigger and better casinos and golf courses, and leela takes affirmative action to protect the environment.
But somewhere out there, an ancient evil is lurking...
This didn't sound the strongest plot but in many ways it's the best written of the four. things click in the second episode and it all comes together very well afterwards.
But even so there's the usual quickfire humour and pretty much every joke works so there's enough to keep you entertained in the meantime.
Since this is the last of this batch and there's no guarantee that there will be any more, the ending has to wrap things up and also leave it open for the show to return if possible. And it manages to do just that in a scene that will make you gasp and leave you desperate for more. And you'll be so absorbed in your reaction that you won't initially notice that kif's uniform changes colour for no apparent reason.
This will make you laugh, it will make you smile, and it will make you desperate for more. Please come back futurama. I miss you already.
The sole language track on the dvd is english.
and the subtitles are english danish finnish norwegian and swedish.
the extras are:
a commentary from some of the cast and crew
storyboard animatic: the first of the four episodes in rough drawing form, with all the dialogue but no music. This actually has a to be continued moment at the end which you wont see in the movie by virtue of it being edited together.
docudrama: how we make futurama so good: a short and totally made up spoof documentary [presented by 'dvd bonus features that nobody watches productions'] showing you how they make the show. not really. but it's very funny.
louder louder!: a very short feature showing magician penn jillette who guests in this recording his part. quite fun to watch.
golden stinkers: five very short deleted scenes that can be watched individually or all at once. they only add up to roughly six minutes in total, and some don't have finished animation but they're all very good.
matt groening and david x cohen in space!: a short film showing how two of the production crew took a flight on a plane that lets you experience zero gravity. well worth watching and it will make you fancy doing it yourself.
how to draw futurama in 18 very difficult steps: eleven minutes worth of film showing how the animators draw four of the characters. not much humour in this despite a few efforts so it's really only of interest to those who want to learn the art.
3-d models with animator discussion: just what it says. short film of spaceships and other big things from this showing how they were animated. short enough to keep the interest.
benders movie theatre etiquette is a fun little bit of all new film showing how you should/shouldnt behave in the cinema. well worth a look.
zapp brannigan's guide to making love to a woman uses clips of zapp from old episodes with a new voiceover to give his guide to relationships. not quite as funny as the above bender item but still worth watching.
I managed to find two easter eggs on the dvd:
watching it on a computer and moving the pointer over the right of the special features screen when you have it at the point where you can select to watch louder louder! will light up a symbol. click on this to see film of actor billy zane improvising some dialogue that was forced on the production team by circumstance.
and if you move the down button on the controls when on the special features screen as far down as it will go you can get to see a short bit of animation drawn by one of the animators on rather rough paper. you'll see what I mean.
Hopefully not the end for the show, but a good release to go out on
