Blu-ray of To Catch a Thief Dazzles!

This one of Hitchcock's just for fun movies and fun it is. The Blu-ray is an excellent encoding of a film that was shot in the VistaVision process developed by Paramount. The transfer is sharp and the Technicolor cinematography sparkles. The Extras are also well done and worth spending time with. At this writing there are now over 30 Blu-ray releases of Alfred Hitchcock films and this is one that Blu-ray really shines with.

I am not a Grace Kelly fan, but she was quite charming in this movie. Cary, was well, suave, debonair, handsome, intelligent, all the things we expect from this great actor. I love the cinematography, the plot, the cars and never get tired of this stylish movie. Kudos also to Jessie Royce Landis.

Grant and Grace "Steal" the Screen in Delightful Hitchcock Action-Comedy Set in the French Riveria

While he is most often associated with "Psycho", a dark brooding psychological horror tale, Hitchcock also knew how to have fun. "To Catch a Thief", which incorporates elements of action, suspense and comedy, is one of his best efforts of this type. Hitch often employed the likes of Cary Grant when he needed a more light-hearted character residing in Europe, and he used the incomparable Grace Kelly when he needed a witty love-interest to keep up with his male lead. This is a completely enjoyable and entertaining film with Grant and Kelly doing what they do best with Hitch at the helm.

In the French Riviera, near Monte Carlo and the Mediterranean Sea, some burglaries have disrupted this otherwise sleepy locale. The targets are jewels owned by French aristocrats and/or wealthy bourgeoisie in expensive houses. Nearby is a former jewel-heister residing in the same vicinity, John Robie, nicknamed the "Cat", played with subtle confidence by Cary Grant. The authorities are convinced the Cat has returned and is wreaking havoc on the community, but Robie insists he's not the one causing millionaire wives to sob at the loss of their priceless jewels. Robie realizes he will have to catch the burglar himself otherwise he'll probably be put on trial for the thefts.

Two Americans, Jesse Stevens and her daughter Frances (Grace Kelly), not only reside in the French Riviera but they also boast owning expensive jewelry. The Cat decides to solicit their help by pretending he's an American businessman who has taken a cursory interest in the thefts. However, Frances has heard of "the Cat" and the burglars, and she begins to suspect not only that he is the Cat but also he's responsible for the current thefts. Grant must play a game of "cat and mouse" in which he uses the Stevens as bait to catch the real thief and all the while staying out of police custody. We as the audience begin wondering who is the real thief and will he be easily apprehended, or have we been playing the fool in believing Grant?

A wonderful film, purely for entertainment value and not to be taken too seriously. The film was shot on location near Monte Carlo, especially on the narrow streets of the French Riviera. Legend has it that the Crown Prince of Monaco saw the cast shooting the film, spotted Kelly, and introduced himself. Shortly thereafter, they engaged in a media-driven romance ending with their marriage. In a tragic twist, Kelly, while driving on those same roads shot in "To Catch a Thief", lost control of her car which plummeted down the steep slopes, causing her death in 1982. Kelly was a real princess, both on and off screen, and hers was one of the most-publicized tragedies of a member of European royalty since before the death of Princess Diana only 16 years later. Interestingly, both princesses died in auto accidents.

If you've owned a copy of "To Catch a Thief" in any format over the years I can tell you right now that you might want to donate them to your local library or just throw them out. Paramount's superb Blu-ray restoration of this Hitchcock classic is what all others will be measured against in years to come. If I could give it 10 stars I would. This is one of the most pristine picture transfers I've ever seen and certainly merits early consideration for "Blu ray of the Year". The restoration team at Paramount has given "Thief" a high Bitrate(38.00) and they deserve the highest praise possible for bringing back all the brilliance of this Hitchcock classic. The film won a 1955 Oscar for Cinematography(Robert Burks)and this blu-ray edition brings those beautiful colors back and then some. Greens, yellows, blues, whites and reds just jump off the screen. Check out the flower market scene as well as the costume ball at the end of the film and you will be astounded. And the French Riviera has never looked more beautiful in this blu-ray transfer. In fact, after I watched the film a second time I wanted to book a flight and head over there. Hitchcock made eleven films in the decade of the Fifties starting with "Stage Fright"(1950) and ending with "North by Northwest"(1959) but the detail on this Blu-ray release is just eye popping. Cary Grant had just turned 50 when he made "To Catch a Thief" and he looked great. Trim and fit with not an ounce of fat and with a deep tan to go with his good looks. There is a scene on the beach after he goes for a swim and you can almost see every hair on his chest, that's how pristine this blu-ray transfer is. Not to mention Grace Kelly. She had a lot of freckles. The ones on her face were covered up with make-up, but you can clearly see the ones on her chest in the scene she has with Grant when she wants him to look at the necklace she's wearing. I missed the necklace and saw the freckles instead. That's the brilliance of this blu-ray. The only disturbing part of the film(and this is minor) is the scene with her driving fast in a sports car with Grant as her passenger along the winding roads of Cannes. Considering that she died in a car crash on these same roads in 1982 at the early age of 52, was somewhat unnerving to me. Who could have known. She was a beautiful woman and a very good actress. She made eleven films between 1951 and 1956 before retiring to become a real life Princess. Cary Grant and Grace Kelly were a class act something that is solely missing in today's film stars. "To Catch a Thief" on Blu-ray is highly recommended. Buy it!! And many thanks to the great restoration team at Paramount Home Video.

Beautiful blu-ray transfer, unlike other Hitchcock films!

Incredibly beautiful blu-ray transfer! All of the other Hitchcock films we have owned on blu ray were actually WORSE than the dvd! (Marnie, The Birds, Rear Window) but this one turned out great! Grace Kelly and Cary Grant light up the screen together. Very satisfied with this purchase, great sound, color and clarity to make To Catch a Thief come alive on the screen.

This book is the basis for the story used in the movie To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. The book is not as light and frothy as the movie; it's written in a noir style. I usually enjoy reading books from which familiar movies were made. I like to have an idea of what the writer intended. And the book is quite different. I enjoyed it.
