On a mission that leads him to Austria; Italy and South America; Bond discovers that Greene; conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources; is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO). Using his associates in the organization; and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government; Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country; giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land. In a minefield of treachery; murder and deceit; Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper; 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA; the terrorists and even M; to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organization.

Some reviewers and fans of the Bond films have complained that this film is a lesser effort in the series and pales in comparison to "Casino Royale". They have missed something important in their assessment of the film. When Dominic Green says to Bond that he and Camille Montez have something in common, that they are both "Damaged goods" he has clearly put before the audience the crux of the film that is "Quantum of Solace".
The film picks up only minutes after the end of "Casino Royale" and we are presented with a very damaged and changed James Bond. As revealed in the first film by Vesper Lynd's assessment of him upon their first meeting on the train, James Bond is a man who came up from humble beginnings and was given a privileged education but never allowed to forget his low origins. This has made him a very guarded loner with a chip on his shoulder, a perfect candidate for recruitment by MI6. In his words to her later on in the film, Vesper has "stripped me of my armor." But by the end of that film he is a man scarred by the death of his love, the armor is back on never to be penetrated again. He is now becoming the Bond of legend and a man bent on revenge.
So in "Quantum" there is no reason for the old fashioned quips or much humor in this man. Yet if you pay attention the character of James Bond as played by the incomparable Daniel Craig he lets us see that there are cracks in the armor. Something of a human heart still exists in him. This is played out in the scene after the plane crash where Camille asks him about his past. Craig shows it in his eyes in the most marvelous example of his layered and subtle acting style. Craig builds and molds a deeper, darker more complex Bond than we have ever seen before, a character more true to the books than in previous incarnations of Bond.
The action in the film is superlative and stylish. The opening car chase is indeed a nail biter only surpassed by the Sienna chase moments later. This too is then topped by the DC10 aerial battle towards the end of the film. The stunts are breathtaking and propel the film at top notch speed. But perhaps the most stunning and original sequence is the gun fight in the restaurant at the Opera house. This is played without sound effect as the score of "Tosca" commands the ear and heightens the emotion of the scene. This is inspired and brilliant film making taking in account all aspects of editing, cinematography, score, and acting. And since I mentioned music I cannot leave out the incredible delicious score by David Arnold who has infused his Bond scores with the much need taste of John Barry. He captures the glorious Barry sound and builds brilliantly upon it.
All the principle players give superlative performances. Judi Dench command attention as she always has as "M". Giancarlo Giannini redeems himself and is truly touching as Mathis. Mathieu Amalic is appropriately slithery and devious as the villain Green. As Agent Fields, Miss Gemma Arterton brings a light and fun light to the film. Finally in the role of Camille Olga Kurylenko holds her own opposite Daniel Craig. This is no mean feat and she is wonderful, athletic and touching in the film.
In the end Bond does find a quantum of solace and ends the film in a telling way. A small gesture that lets us know he is now moving on but not without a tinge of sadness. This beautiful sad ending is a refreshing and moving way to end a Bond film.
"Quantum of Solace" is a fast paced film that demands attention to the small details and respect for superlative performances by all involved from the director Marc Forster to the entire cast and crew.

The Blu-ray presentation is utterly beautiful. A magnificent picture that fairly pops off the screen. The sound as well is astonding and puts you right in the middle of the action. As for the extras there are plenty. The best being a featurette entitled "Bond On Location". Also presented dubbed in French, Spanish and Portuguese, and subtitled thus and in sever Asian languages including Chinese. This is a must have for any Bond fan.

This movie has a good storyline, is well directed, and contains some of my favorite characters and actors.
  • Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2012
first i want to say more's the pity the 2-disc version is not available on blu-ray - although i didn't inspect the disc menu that closely - perhaps the same features are there. I'll revise this review if they are.

The blue-ray version is good - great quality transfer of video and sound

Second - as far as the film goes: actually the character development is 1) consistent with the original bond novels, which actually do explain why (the old) bond is such a misogynistic womanizing s.o.b.; the Craig movies offer considerably more than any Bond films that precede them; to say there's no character development is a short-sighted criticism. Niven, Connery, Moore, Dalton, Brosnin -- have i overlooked anyone? Who can possibly say that "character development" was even attempted with any of these? Did that impeded the fun of watching Sean Connery swagger across reel after reel? I think not!

However I liked this the first time I saw it and it improves on re-view. Bond's character definitely develops, playing out the sequelae to his relationship with Vesper; M is at her authoritative best; many of the supporting characters are a little cardboard-cutout and the girl-being-rescued is - at first blush I found her boring, but by the time the film reached it's climactic scene, which is pretty eye-popping, I liked her a lot better. I won't say why. Ultimately there's still a lot of big-strong-man protecting beautiful-helpless-woman dynamic (*yawn*) but hey - it's Bond. You can only change so much. And only so much has really changed since the "pussy galore" days - it's pretty contemporary.

I think the biggest problem this film suffers is that it IS more of a regular Bond film. There are plenty of action-packed scenes, typical bond women, a coherent story-line, quippy one-liners. I loved the complexity of the first film; I loved that Bond was both tough and vulnerable. On the other hand, if you look at the reviews of Casino Royale, half the people are complaining about that very element. Just goes to show you can't please all the people all of the time. But it is true that in the original novels, the whole reason Bond treats women the way he does is because of the pain in his broken heart. Men; they never do deal with their feelings, do they?

My final word: I never thought I'd find myself saying this, but Daniel Craig is the BEST BOND EVER. I am an old, old Bond film. I've seen every Connery film at least five or ten times. Sean Connery to me WAS the epitomy of Bondness; he had a rich combination of animal magnetism combined with smooth manners, quick reflexes, athletic and intellectual credibility, as well as... well let's say that voice is enough to reduce me to a puddle of jello (and yes, I am female). But Connery was ALL swagger. Craig is a delicious balance between bad-boy machismo and the sense that he needs a little rescuing himself. The dialogue and plot development in this film capture that quality well.

I never in a million years would have believed any actor could out-Bond Connery, but Daniel Craig IMO has done it. He brings a comparable level of unbridled masculine energy as typified Connery, and combines it effortlessly with a truly three-dimensional presence. He is both more sophisticated and rougher around the edges - truly Bond for the new millenium.

Bond films are still a feminist's outrage, but at least these have been updated to our current cultural norms, which are unfortunately not much less sexist, but certainly a slightly smoother cocktail - no vermouth this time, shaken, not stirred.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...der zweitbeste James Bond Film bisher....
Reviewed in Germany on July 9, 2011

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2009
Yep as usual, like this film vs Casino Royale, Daniel Craig vs Sean Connery, Connerys' toupee vs Roger Moores', there will no pleasing everyone. But straight off the bat I will agree there is some loose moments - and a lot of very clumsy, short editing going on (fight scenes mentioned mainly in reviews - but what about the start? you barely get more than a 2 second glimpse of the beautiful Aston Martin DBS!!?)

But, I actually think such comments miss the point. Starting with a cracking re-working with Casino Royale, the new bond films present a fantastic and vibrant re-imagining - all the key "Bond criteria" is present but with two new and critical points - character development and story telling. Of course the majority of new Bond revisionists will argue that nothing will top Casino Royale (CR for future ref!!) but this film actually in some ways delivers more. CR is the new-laid foundation - but at the end you want to know more, not just in terms or what happens n ext, but what of Bond himself. So in QOS you actually see the cause and effect - not seen since "License to Kill" have we seen Bond driven by revenge - but thanks to the ever-skillful Daniel Craig we see more - yes, the film starts a bit full on and clumsy, but the delightful interchange between Bond and M early on set the mood. He tries to center himself, but is out of control - he is mourning, he is genuinely troubled - but angry at himself and at his betrayal - and this whole side of Bond is new to see and handled superbly by Craig.

Like I said the craftwork of the film is not what I am focussed on - its how things develop. The cast is very strong - Denchs' M is so well realised, Jeffrey Wright is also excellent as the new and probably-the-best-ever Leiter, Kurlyenko also delivers some genuine depth and skill to what could easily be a one dimensional caricature and her characters' burning desire for revenge is so intense - it actually seems to perfectly balance out Craigs' vengeful yet out-of-control Bond.
Looking from this angle the film is strong - visually it is no less beautiful, some really striking scenes - the theatre scene is just amazing, the character development and interaction progress all the more (the last scene with Bond and Mathis is genuinely affecting - like NOTHING before in a Bond film)

so to this end I think its an imperfect but in my opinion braver, deeper more considerate film even than the excellent CR. Which actually strives to look further into the Bond character and give greater depth to his protagonists too. Great stuff!!
