Product Description
For generations, war and chaos raged across the land of Tyria. Five great races competed and warred against each other, struggling to tip the balance of power in their favor.
Then the dragons woke.
The all-powerful beasts stirred from their millennial sleep under earth and sea. With their magical breath the dragons spread destruction and created legions of twisted slaves. A deathless dragon named Zhaitan raised the sunken nation of Orr, triggering earthquakes and tidal waves that destroyed entire cities across the Sea of Sorrows. Zhaitan's undead armies surged from the sea, hungry for the destruction of the five races of Tyria: the charr, a ferocious race of feline warriors; the asura, magical inventors of small size and great intellect; the norn, towering shapeshifters from the frigid northern lands; the sylvari, a mysterious young race of visionary plant folk; and the humans, an embattled but resilient people.
Now heroes from the five races must set aside ancient rivalries and stand together against their common enemies in the sequel to the hit MMO Guild Wars. Magic, technology, and cold steel will determine the ultimate fate of the world.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2012Something people will notice about online/downloadable games and other non-tangible products is typically if they don't like it, it's an immediate 1 star. I'm not sure why this occurs. Even if I disliked playing Guild Wars 2, it would still be at least a 3 star product as 3 stars is "it's ok". For me, I actually do enjoy playing it a great deal, but there is more toward giving it five stars as I did.
Graphics 4.5/5: The graphics are very strong in this game, but not machine hindering. I have an old workhorse computer. My processor and most of my components are at least 3 years old (Q6600 CPU, 4gb RAM, video card is the newest - a GFX 560ti) and I'm still playing the game at 1080p with all high settings at between 25-35fps. The graphics look very good. The distortion of the air as a spell moves through it, the foot prints left behind as you walk through snow, the water splashing across the screen as you swim through a stream, they're all excellent touches and work well with the absolute vibrancy and variety of landscapes you'll see. Enchanted forests, snowy mountains, underwater shipwrecks, they're all there.
Gameplay 5/5: The gameplay is probably the biggest varying grade depending on who you talk to. For some it will be too sticky, for others not sticky enough. For me it's 'just right'. The gameplay has a slight 'twitch' based aspect to it, but not too much. You can dodge grenade like projectiles and slow moving spell orbs, and you can even potentially dodge 'homing' attacks by utilizing a 'dodge/roll' feature that is available to every character, although you can't use it constantly. A vast majority of the skills and spells are able to be utilized while on the move, and this is probably one of my favorite aspects. Long gone are the days of being rooted to the ground while charging up a spell, now you can feel free to hop and move about, which is an excellent change of pace. There is a certain level of 'aiming' in the game, but not too much to feel like if you're unskilled with twitch based games you'll be at a huge disadvantage. A character with a huge sword can catch multiple creatures when they swing their sword in an arc in front of them, instead of being forced to only damage the creature targeted. You can also swing or cast without having an opponent targeted at all, just in case you're not exactly sure what you should be doing in the heat of a massive combat.
Speaking of massive combat, it's genuinely fun. The fact that each class, no matter which one you choose, has a variety of different ways to play is very refreshing. You could equip a greatsword and work at putting out as much damage as you can muster with AoE and single target damage skills, and then when you see your allies starting to lose, you can quickly swap out to a staff that perhaps has skills to heal, shield, or buff those around you. When someone is down, you can heal and revive them no matter who you are, meaning that there's always hope in an encounter even when things seem dire. A particular combat comes to mind that I was in. It was a group of about 15 of us against a group event creature, and in one fell swoop over half of the group died. With only around four characters remaining, three of them worked at keeping the creature busy by running around and dodging it's attacks as best they could, while I worked at reviving a character. Then myself and that character revived two more characters, then us four revived four more characters and before we knew it we were back in the game from a certain defeat. There's so much more to be said about the gameplay, but I'll leave it at that for now.
Sound 4/5: The sound is appropriate, and does go above the call of duty in some aspects. The jingling of your heavy armor as you walk, the whistling of the winds in a valley, the swishing of the waves near a body of water are all very nice. The music is good, if a bit forgettable. The effects of striking an opponent are a bit exaggerated, but not annoying. All in all the sound is definitely a positive experience.
Playability 5/5: I think on-line games in general need a 'playability' category, or 'how often can I get in and have some fun?' Logging in to Guild Wars 2 is VERY swift, almost scarily so, and logging out is just as swift. I've had no problems with my game time as of yet, but I did come later to the party than those that started on day one. I've never had the game crash. I've never had the server crash. I've never encountered a bug that forced me to be unable to play. Not only that, there is so much to do that even if you only have half an hour to play, you can accomplish something. There's always daily achievements that reward you, such as gathering resources or killing a variety of opponents. There's always small quests that you'll run up on, a majority of which can be completed in between 5 and 20 minutes. There's always something to do, and no matter what you do the game does an excellent job at actually rewarding the players. You gain experience for exploring. You gain experience for crafting. You gain experience for chopping trees and mining mines. You gain experience for reviving fallen NPCs, and of course you gain experience for doing all the classic hacking and slashing and questing found in any MMO.
At the end of the day, when determining how I want to rate a product I ask myself in the end 'did I get my monies worth?' If the answer is 'yes' then the review obviously has to be positive. The next question is 'are there a ton of things I could have gotten more value from in this category for the money I spent?' If the answer is 'no' then the review needs to be a four or a five. Guild Wars 2 is nearly always on sale, with a plethora of special input codes to lower the price and almost assure that you get your copy for about $45. For $45, in the realm of on line video games Guild Wars 2 has absolutely given me my monies worth, and has now gone past what it was worth to me, making it an enjoyable and extremely worthwhile purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2012GW2 brings some key innovations to a very stale genre and pairs the excellent game design with a massive, expansive and deep world space and PvE content. Many MMOs since Vanilla WoW have had tiny worlds that can barely offer 80 hours of world PvE experience. I've logged 500 hours of GW2 since launch and there are parts of the world I still haven't seen as I've leveled three characters to the level 80 cap.
Combat is fun and dynamic, with dodging and using skills while moving a key element of efficient and effective game play. The skill system is different enough from the normal MMO fare that many MMO vets may face a bit of a learning curve as they adjust to a different way of doing things, but once you become adept at playing GW2, it can be hard to go back to more stale offerings in the genre.
The game offers a branching story, with choices made at character creation offering the first opportunity to determine the direction your story will take. There is some convergence of story regardless off what choices you make or what race you chose, but there is enough variety along the way to greatly enhance replayability.
The game also offers a robust Structured PvP format with instanced 3 to 8 man battlefields and casual, formal and "paid" tournaments, along with a game mode called World vs. World which features multi-zone, objective based world PvP that pits players from three separate game servers against each other.
For Dungeon Crawlers, the game offers a number of 5 man dungeons, starting at level 30 and running up to the level cap. The game has also just recently added a new semi-random dungeon that allows players to advance a level of difficulty that grants greater rewards depending on the difficulty level players have achieved and selected for a given run.
Character creation is among the most robust in any current MMO, the character models and armors are very well done and animations are excellent. The world is beautiful and though not as varied as the often incongruent zone layout found in WoW does offer a number of general themes, along with enough differentiation for each zone so it's obvious where you are in the game.
A good portion of world PvE content in GW2 is in the form of Dynamic Events. These provide an alternative to quest based MMO gaming. Things happen in the game world, sometimes on a timer, sometimes based on player actions and sometimes even based on the outcomes of other events in the zone. the objectives will be displayed on the right side of the interface and anyone can jump in and participate. At completion, the player is instantly awarded XP, Karma, (an alternative currency mostly gained via events that essentially allows players to visit a karma vendor and select their own rewards) and coin. No quest turn ins, no quest log. No pre-requisites. If an event is happening near you, you can participate. (Often, NPCs in the world will actually seek out and flag down players to alert them to some event that is occuring near by, which adds to the immersion and is a very nice touch).
I've had nothing but good to say about the game, but it is not perfect. Some Dynamic Events are bugged and stay that way a little longer than one would expect. Though the game is largely bug free, there are still some small bugs that pop up here and there. I think the biggest caution I'd offer people considering the game is that there is a lot here that is different from the traditional MMO and the game doesn't do the best job at guiding new players on how all these things actually work. Though it is not difficult to hop in and enjoy the opening levels, expect a learning curve to become comfortable with the game, your profession and all the features the game offers, many of which are not obvious. MMO vets may also have to unlearn some bad MMO habits and adjust to the way that GW2 does things. Going in with an open mind and a willingness to learn and adapt to the game are likely key pre-requisites to getting the most from this game.
In the years since WoW released, I've been lucky to get more than 80 hours from any subsequent MMO title. In the last three years, that number has most often been closer to 40-60 hours. I'm blown away that I have played over 500 hours of GW2 and see my self getting at least another 500 hours from the at launch content, if not much more. If you are looking for a long term game and can get past the initial learning curve, you may find the long term MMO experience you've been looking for.
The game's business model is Buy to Play. You buy the box and then there is no monthly fee to continue playing the game. You will always have access to the game content at launch plus the free content that is released on an ongoing basis. There will likely be paid expansions in the future that players wil need to buy in order to unlock that content, but there will never be a sub fee and the amount of content you get for the box price is massive.
To provide ongoing income, there is a variation of a cash shop. Nothing in the cash shop is needed to play, nor is there anything you need to buy to enjoy the game. The leveling curve is flat after level 20, with each level there after taking about 1 1/2 hours of play, so this is not a game that introduces leveling grind that has to be reduced by paid leveling rate boosts, as seen in many free to play games. Maybe the most controversial element of the cash shop is the ability to trade cash shop currency, (gems) for in game coin. The exchange rate is based on demand and other economic factors. On the plus side, in game coin can also be exchanged for gems, so people with plenty of time to accumulate in game gold can exchange the excess for gems and buy any cash shop items or account upgrades with out having to pay real world currency. (The most commonly purchased upgrades are probably additional account bank slots, or additional character slots for those that need more than the five included with the box price).
This is a truly superb, vast and content packed MMO title that is worth much more than the one time box price required to play the game. The lack of a subscription fee gives players a lot of freedom to take breaks and play other PC and Non-PC games, knowing they can always return to GW2 at any time with out financial concerns. No more paying a sub fee on a game you are on hiatus from, just because you aren't ready to give up instant access to the game when the mood so strikes you.
Ignore the one star reviews, as most are by those with some agenda giving the game a completely unfair rating in order to increase their impact on the score of a game they have decided not to like. This is a quality title deserving of nothing less than a 4 star rating based on objective criteria. I give it a five because it is such a great personal fit and I just can't help but being totally blown away by the 500+ hours of entertainment value, and counting, that I have received in return for the box price. Hard to beat the entertainment value! As a long time MMO vet I have to say I'm thrilled by an MMO designed to actually be played for months or years, which puts GW2 in sharp juxtaposition to most titles in recent years that are lucky to offer 80 hours of world PvE content.
Well worth the box price for anyone looking for a long term MMO, while also possessing an open enough mind and enough patience to overcome the learning curve necessary to get the most from what the game offers.

Sandra BoyceReviewed in Canada on December 26, 20125.0 out of 5 stars Nice Change
I've only been playing for a couple of day now but so far I really like this game. The way people can just run in and help each other while still getting xp and loot is great. No longer will you chase people off yelling "kill stealer!". It can get a bit hectic but it's kind of nice to have help even when it isn't intentional. I haven't gotten to the pvp yet so I can't rate that but the pve is a lot of fun. It's different from other mmo's and it's nice to see a game company being brave enough to try something new even though it puts the game at risk.
I wish the bodies for the female Char were a bit more...womanly lmao. I understand that they're beasts but sheesh! Could have made them slimmer, not so hunched backed and with curves! :-P But that's just me.
TellurianWillReviewed in Canada on March 14, 20134.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
I would say that Guild Wars 2 is a decent game. I found the in game transaction model to be fair and I enjoyed the ability to drop in and play at any time without the need of a subscription. Over all I pretty good game with interesting mechanics and fun classes. While the PvE content is somewhat lacking the PvP more than makes up for it.

This is a really fun game (better than WoW r other MMORPGs in my opinion) and it has no monthly subscription fee. You could easily play for hours on end and not get bored. I also find it has a nice balance for items vs levels and the leveling grind isn't too easy or difficult. I got it for the sale price and am quite happy. I would recommend this game. Also, a new expansion was recently released as well.
