I really wasn't even looking for a Blu-ray player, but I needed a DVD player and didn't see the logic in paying money for outmoded technology when for more, quite a bit more though, I could get Blu-ray and Netflix streaming. I'm very glad I made the decision to spend the extra money. It came down to two players for me, the Samsung BD-P1600 or the LG. I decided to go with the LG BD 390 because, unlike the Samsung, it has built in wireless b/g/n and 1GB of memory. On the Samsung you have to buy a wireless dongle and a flash USB drive for memory. The LG is very nicely styled with only 6 buttons on the front of the unit, the playback controls that light up in blue and power and tray open/close buttons on the top edge. The display on the front of the player is very bright and fairly large. It's very easy to see. I also like the fact that when you press a button on the remote a little indicator lights up in the display to let you know. This way you don't wonder whether the player didn't get the command or if it's something you cannot do in the current mode. The remote is a decent size and has a logical button layout (see photo). Picture quality on my 32" 720p LCD TV is great. Blu-ray discs and regular DVDs look flawless. Additionally, when you take out a disc you haven't finished watching and put it back in later, even if you've turned the player off, it will start up where you left off, nice. Netflix streams in very high quality (up to 720p HD) over my cable high-speed network. The Netflix activation process is very simple as well. My wireless router is an Apple AirPort Extreme with WPA security and the LG wirelessly linked up with it easily. You can also access YouTube, CinemaNow, and a local media server with the LG. Of these, I've only tried the YouTube player and found it worked well. Finally, updates for the player's software can be easily downloaded over the wireless network through the set-up menu. The connections on the rear are very comprehensive and included HDMI, Component and Composite video, Digital and Optical audio, and 7.1 surround sound outputs. There is also an Ethernet port if you prefer to use the player on a wired network. The only negative I have about the LG is that the remote is quite cheesy in construction and does not feel up to the caliber of a player of this cost. Also the player itself sounds a little strained when the drawer opens and closes. I'm hoping that this is not a sign of bad things to come. All in all...Blu-ray, plus a seamless Netflix experience, all wrapped up in a stylish box. Note to Apple AirPort Extreme users: Someone read my review and contacted me saying that they were not able to get the LG to wirlessly connected to their AirPort, what was I doing differently? Well after some playing around with the AirPort Extreme's settings I came to the conclusion that the LG will only connect to the AirPort when the wireless mode is either 802.11n only (2.4GHz), 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible), or 802.11n (a compatible). The 802.11n only (5GHz) setting WILL NOT WORK with the LG. I've included a photo of said setting. 08/28/2009 Update: If you have the LG hooked up to your network it will automatically tell you when a software update is available. Nice touch.

I read a number of reviews before I settled on the BD-390. I have a MacOSX household and one thing I wanted to make certain was the compatibility. The reviews were all over the map with regard to this issue. Let me settle the question now. It is seamless when it comes to Macintosh compatibility. I was watching movies, looking at photos, and listening to music from my MacBook Pro within minutes. One of the reviews I read on here said that LG doesn't support Mac/Apple compatibility. Since when do Macintosh users require support from a manufacturer? I am running Snow Leopard and use a 1GB TIme Capsule, so I can't speak about previous versions of OS X or other WiFi set ups, but it is simple to configure and use with my set up. One catch is that you will need to download Elgato's EyeConnect 1.6. Again, downloading and installing EyeConnect and configuring everything took no longer then 10 minutes.

Now for anyone else that doesn't require Mac compatibility....

Speed - This was something I didn't put much thought into. Why? Because a few seconds here or there is just not that important to me. I typically turn the thing on, pop a DVD in and go to the kitchen for something to drink and by the time I am back it is ready to go. Unfortunately we have become a society of "instant" results. Sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for.

Picture - I have a 42" Aquos 1080i and the picture looks great to me. Now, this is my first Blu-Ray player, so I really don't have anything to compare it to, but the picture quality looks great to me. It is crisp, clear, and brilliant looking.

Sound - Running it through my Onkyo receiver sounds great.

Connectivity & Streaming - Absolutely no issues. YouTube, NetFlix, CinemaNow, and the recently added Vudu work great. You even get a free movie with NetFlix and Vudu. Yes, you have to register, provide a credit card number, and sign up with these services, but it was easy and the rentals are reasonably priced.

Remote control - Not the greatest, but it is straight forward to use and does what it needs to.

Price - Expensive? Well I guess it is based upon your perspective. Bottled water is about $8 dollars a gallon, gas around $3 per gallon, and you can't go out to dinner for less then $20 these days. So, in my opinion everything is expensive. Currently Amazon is selling this thing for $275. A lot? Perhaps, but if you are planning to buy a Blu-Ray player then you will be spending at least $200 anyway. So why not spend the additional $75 for the streaming content and WiFi connectivity. To me it's not a matter of worth it, is a matter of what you want. Put it this way, none of us NEED a Blu-Ray player. For that matter, none of us NEED a TV. It's a matter of WANT. If the price is a little inflated, but has every feature that you WANT then it is worth it. Now, some say just get a PlayStation. Ok, go ahead. I have no NEED for a PlayStation. ;-)

All in all my experience with this machine has been great.

I like this player overall, but there were some issues in a few areas. This is my first blu-ray player, so I'm not sure how many problems were due to the player, or were due to the blu-ray disc authoring.

My setup: HDMI out from player to Samsung 1080p TV, and coaxial digital audio output to a 10-year old Yamaha RX-V2095 A/V amplifier. Player configured to access my home network and internet via a Netgear wireless-G router.

I also tried connecting the composite video output of the player to the video aux input of the A/V amp. This works, but the player does not output the correct aspect ratio for a standard definition TV - the picture is somewhat squeezed horizontally (not a big deal).

The remote control is awful. The buttons are small, the button labels are small and dim. By comparison, the Samsung TV's remote is wonderful - big clear black text on big white buttons. LG should certainly redesign their remote.

I've played the following blu-ray discs on this player so far: Bladerunner, The Fifth Element, 2001 Space Oddyssey, and Star Trek (original series) seasons 1 and 2. Picture quality for HD features is wonderful on my Samsung (once I turned off its dynamic contrast function, but that's another story).

Disc load time is reasonable, less than 10 seconds. Some discs take longer than others, for example, the Star Trek season 2 discs all have BD-live features, so when the disc first loads, the player connects to the internet and download updates; this adds about 10-20 seconds of delay. Kind of annoying, but this is the disc's fault, not the player's.

All but the Star Trek discs played flawlessly. The Star Trek discs have 'seamless' branching between the old visual effects and the new CGI effects. Whenever a branch point is reached, the little camera icon appears in the upper right corner. This may be the fault of the disc authoring, but I found it annoying that I couldn't turn off the display of this icon - it appears quite often in the course of one 50-minute episode. Worse than this, once in a long while the audio would cut out for up to a second just after a branch point, and when it came back, it was out of sync with the video (both the HDMI audio to the TV, and the coaxial digital audio to the amp). I could fix this by scanning backwards briefly then resuming playback - the audio would snap back into sync.

The BD-live features mostly worked OK. When going into a video download screen, there was a choice of several videos that could be downloaded. The downloads worked fine and the videos played fine. However, there was no way that I could find to go back to the disc menu. Both the menu return button and the disc menu button would do nothing. The only way to exit was to hit the HOME button, which unloads the disc. Very annoying, but this may be due to faulty disc authoring.

The YouTube interface works well (I did not try the CinemaNow, NetFlix, or Vudu interfaces). It would be nice if you could plug in a standard computer keyboard into the player's USB port for quicker entry of search strings.

I also tried playing DVD-R video discs that I authored and burned on my Mac. This works fine. The player also plays all the mpeg4 video clips (HD and SD) that I created on my Mac. I can easily stream wirelessly the .mp4 files from my old windows PC to the player. However, the 1080i files (at 8 Mbits/sec) are a bit too much for my router. The SD clips (at 1.5-2.0 Mbits/sec) stream with no hiccups. To play the HD videos, I simply put them on a thumb drive, and plug that into the player. Works fine.

In regard to playing DVD video, the player upconverts to 1080p, However, sometimes there were minor little artifacts in the video, as if the player's de-interlace function was failing for certain kinds of motion. I'm probably too picky, since my day job involves critical observation of HD video, so I'm used to much better upconversion performance.

I also used the player to display jpeg pictures on the thumb drive. The player displays them with out problems, but I don't like the picture quality at all. The player must be using a very simple scaling method, because fine detail in the pictures looks very aliased. I think they tried too hard to make it sharp. My Samsung TV can also display jpegs from a thumb drive, and they look a whole lot better this way.

Finally, one last issue with the player - when left idle for several minutes, it turns itself off!

I've had the player for a little over a month, and there have been two firmware updates in that time. The last update added the Vudu interface, but didn't fix any of the problems. Hopefully a future firmware update will fix the seamless branch audio sync issue.
