Perfect for Vegetative.

It is quite nice, the 125w CFL is decent and I am using it with much success for a mother/cloning room. I am thinking about upgrading to a 250w CFL when the lamp is EOL. I will say that for the same price you could purchase a 150w Sunburst HPS, but beware as they have traditional magnetic ballasts which have not nearly as much efficacy as digital ballasts touting 0.99+! So even thought they advertise 150w - expected current draw of 1.2 amps or so, they draw about 4.5 amps on ignition and settle down to 3.2 amps or so, for that kind of power consumption you could easily just get a 400w HPS with a dimmable digital ballast and under power your light.

Either way this is a good solution for an intermediate light need - Vegetative growth. If you want to flower with them I would suggest 250w CFLs and a lot of them.

Good construction and light distribution

Good construction and light distribution. I wish that it wasn't open-ended, but I didn't think about that when I was picking it out.
My main concern now is that after only 6 months of use (10 hours per day, so maybe 2000 hours) the light is noticeably dimmer and flickering subtly. It started doing this sometime this past week, although I'm not exactly sure when. I wasn't expecting to need to replace the bulb so soon.

After one month - no longer working

Bought in September. It is now September 15th and it doesn't work. It seemed to work well when it was working, but this isn't high tech. This is pretty basic "lighting" which we have been using for 100 years. It seems that over the last 100 years we could have perfected this by now.

New improved model I noticed right away it's great

This a new improved model.The bulb is smaller than the previous model and brighter too.
In addition it has a mylarized reflector where as the previous mode was just painted white.
The reflector is also curved unlike the previous model so that the plants growing underneath it will get more light.
I have two of the previous models of this growing light next to it and noticed that plants seem
to grow faster with this new improved model.
One piece of advice though is that plastic will be covered over the mylar reflector and must be removed before use.
Don't use greasy bare fingers removing it or touching the reflector.Use ideally surgeon gloves instead.The reflector also has to be inserted correctly.

Great light system

So far this light system has exceeded my expectations. Our herb garden couldnt be any happier. It definitely makes it easier to start your garden indoors rather than the hot Texas heat. We had an entire crop of young vegetables dry up and die in the matter of days outdoors. Its very sturdy and of high quality. The packaging of the system really did a great job n transit since the light bulb was intact. I would recommend this system to any gardener.

VERY Bright, saved my plants

I bought this to save my outside potted plants that I have to bring in during the winter months. They are: 1 large potted Aloe and 2 large potted Angel Wing Begonias. All three had begun to wilt and the begonias had developed a mold issue from not getting enough light. I was watering them only about 1X a week. I did not have a place to actually mount this light, so I just used the attached brackets and hung it off a chair. The light is extremely bright and within a week, the plants started perking up and looking like they might not die after all and that was only with using the light for about 1/2-1 hour in the evenings when I get home. It looks like it would be very easy to hang this if you wanted to put up brackets in the ceiling. Since I just needed something in my kitchen during winter months, I'm not bothering with that.

Con: And why it did not get 5 stars. There is no light switch.

To turn this off, you have to unplug it. I really don't like the idea of having to unplug the light all the time since sometimes I have wet hands from watering the plants. But the light gets pretty warm and I'm not leaving it on without supervision since I have cats.

This is probably the third time I've purchased this. Every time I move or whatever, I buy another one. I have a serious plant hobby- and if you care about your plants, this is the light. It's cheap, it's amazing, and you can either hang it or put it on it's end on a flat surface without burning the house down. (and if you put plants EVERYWHERE like I do, this is a big deal!!) I've had expensive, HOT, dual switch lamps when growing certain crops in CA (HPS to Halide and back) - and honestly, this lamp is a better value and the plants are content and growing great. I'm currently growing carnivores, but I want have them for years and years. And this one lamp is good for my small carnivore garden, my Olive tree and a tiny Sago Palm. About 3 medium pots... I can't stress what a value this lamp is for a serious plant person. (30 years experience :))

Hydrofarm FLCDG125D 125-Watt CFL System with Dew Guard

This system only costs about $10 more than just the bulb so if you don't have the mogul base socket, then this is a great deal. It comes with a nice 6400k (6400 kelvin color temperature) grow light that promotes enhanced vegetative growth. It supports either the 125W or 200W bulbs (mogul base type). You have to keep small plants about 3-4 inches away from the 125W bulb, or they get too warm and will wilt (maybe I just need to have a fan to blow the heat away from the plants). It has a nice bright bulb that has been turned on continuously for about a month. No problems so far.
