- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2011I've tried many different food/nutrition lifestyles and none have made such a positive impact on my life as this book. I'm 6'3", in my mid 40s, about 30 lbs overweight (and dropping), and quite active. I run for about 30 minutes three days a week, lift weights three days a week, powerwalk just about every day, occasionally play basketball, go hiking, bike riding, etc.
I've also struggled with fatigue over the last few years. I've tried increasing my vegetable intake (including growing my own), different multivitamins, protein powders, various supplements, etc., etc. My doctor has tested me extensively and found nothing wrong. As a result, he said he is willing to diagnose me with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Since I've I started putting some of the principles in this book into practice, for the first time, I have noticed a real difference in my well being, as follows:
>My sugar cravings are all but gone
>My energy levels have gone up significantly (huge difference)
>Mental clarity is improved
>My appetite is markedly reduced
>I'm losing weight without trying very hard =)
>I just feel so much better than I used to
As I said, I've only implemented some of the recommendations in this book, but here are the ones that seem to have the most impact:
>I eat 1-2 tablespoons of virgin, unrefined coconut oil with each meal (if I can't incorporate it into my meal, I'll just eat it raw right from the spoon - melts in my mouth - and now that I'm used to it, I find it quite delicious)
>I drink an 8 - 10 oz glass of raw whole milk with each meal (can be hard to find - but makes a huge difference and you don't need protein powder if you are drinking this much milk because it is an excellent protein source. As a side note, my mother, who cannot tolerate milk, has no problem with raw whole milk - go figure?)
>I take a teaspoon of Twin Labs cod liver oil with morning and evening meals
>Just today, I added Borage Oil - so we'll see how that goes
Some things I've always done:
>I try to eat a healthy diet that includes freshly rolled oats (I roll the oat groats myself), whole wheat bread (I grind the wheat and make the bread), eat legumes, eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
>I take a multivitamin (used to take Pioneer, but just switched to MegaFood One Daily)
I realize that eating more fat seems counter-intuitive (I too was skeptical), but it is the type of fat that is important. The book explains and supports its explanations well and the results in my life have been quite amazing.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2012This book tells me why I gained 10 pounds when I converted from a high fat diet to a low fat diet. I am now following the book's advice and going back to a high fat diet. When I was a weightlifter tried to eat more protein that naturally comes with fat (beef, cheese, eggs, fish,...). I avoided bread, cereal, potatoes, sweets.... When I converted to marathon running I reversed my diet to include more carbohydrates that I previously avoided on the theory that I would run off the empty calories. My legs got thicker and I had to buy larger pants but I thought that was due to more muscles in my legs. I did note more fat around my waist and on my arms but shrugged it off. In fact, the high-carbohydrate diet did cause me to gain some fat that I did not have when on the high protein and high fat diet of my weightlifting years.
So now I am following the book's advice and am eating more fat. I immediately noticed a difference -- less cravings and an immediate drop in fat around the waistline and elsewhere. I am reducing carbohydrates and starches, but slowly in a zig-zag pattern to carefully note how the dietary composition affects weight, energy, mood, and other aspects of health.
This book is mostly recipes but the first section is full of useful facts. It lacks crucial footnotes that are probably in the longer book by the same authors. Many of the citations are very old so they may be classics or defective by modern standards. If the references are correct they are very important and need to be taken into account by current dietitians and researchers.
The key recommendation of the book is to use coconut oil that I previously had no experience with. It is a staple in many countries so there should be considerable epidemiological evidence that could be reported in the book. So far I like coconut oil. I also like butter and am glad the book gave me more reason to use it. I also like wheat germ oil and cod liver oil as recommended by the book. I immediately started feeling better when using these oils even though I previously thought them to be unhealthy empty calories (lack protein). It is not clear what is the optimal dose of these oils.
Overall this book is well written with great recommendations. Should be read in conjunction with easy current information such as the Dr. Lustig video "Sugar -- The Bitter Truth." More difficult is actual scientific literature on cholesterol and "the lipid hypothesis" which can link to numerous researchers and topics that support the ideas of this book. Much can be found on google scholar and wikipedia. For example

The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease

The title is misleading. One should read this book even if not trying to lose weight. This book gives you a different perspective on the healthy diet not suggested/supported by the main stream nutritionists and doctors. I am trying to adopt the diet to suit Indian conditions considering we are not used to eating meat every meal. The fact that I have been following the dietary guidelines suggested by Weston A Price foundation will make it easier to adopt the diet suggested in the book.
Renee BReviewed in Canada on August 26, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Wow!! Such knowledge!
Yes! The title is scary...just contemplating it for some people might be a huge disconnect. Mary Enig is a specialist in fats. It's her field of study for her PhD, and does it show! There is so much useful information in here that can improve anyone's health. There is so much misinformation out there. Do yourself a favor and read this book. I borrowed it from a friend, read it and then I bought it. It is that mind blowing and I believe wholeheartedly what this book says. There are many people that think margarine is good for you when really it is very damaging! Don't you want to know why? So many of your systems rely on fat, hormones is just one.
This book made me think about my old relatives. I grew up on a farm and let me tell you, when I was a kid eating at great-great aunt's place, delicious food! It was loaded with healthy fats and it was wholesome foods. These people lived to 90 years old and not sick, fully functioning with great memories. This holds more truth in my books than any low fat food craze can possibly contain. That short-circuits your system and has you wasting hours of your life eating every two hours because you get jittery. Try it, you will be amazed.
Also, please note that it's not like everything is supposed to be dripping in fat, a bit goes a long way.

Your body will thank you for it!
