A Lodging of Wayfaring Men Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 99 ratings

Instantly named Freedom Book of The Month and a major influence in the Cyber-underground, A Lodging of Wayfaring Men is the story of freedom-seekers who create an alternative society on the Internet - a virtual society, with no possibility of oversight or control. It grows so fast that governments and “leaders” are terrified, and fight to co-opt this cyber-society before it undermines the power of the governing elite.

The main body of the book is followed by a set of essays and a supplemental narrative that were composed as the book was being written.

For those of you who may not have read the marvelous A Lodging of Wayfaring Men, I strongly encourage you to do so.
-- Capital Reward Blog

The novel leads us through a clever plot where the principles of freedom and individuality lead to a free market, one not controlled by governments or by tax men. The narrative is gripping. The reader cannot lay the book down.
-- Dr. Thomas Dorman

As full as my reading schedule is, I plan to make time to return to A Lodging of Wayfaring Men in order to glean the most from this interesting, thought-provoking tale.
-- Sunni Maravillosa, Free-Market.net

Of the twenty five or so people I worked with last fall, all of them revered A Lodging of Wayfaring Men as a bible. They referred to the house and their community effort as a Lodge. We all felt it was modeled on the Free Souls.
-- HW, underground programmer

One of the most thought-provoking books to hit the information highway in recent times.
-- David MacGregor, Sovereign Living

Coaching/Training Philosophy:

The most important aspect of training, which most of my entire career is based upon, is holding clients accountable to make regular exercise a way of life. A lifestyle. Working our hard – great, working out long – ok too, but working out often – best. This is how people get results and results that last.

A very Libertarian\Laisse Faire Capitalism themed story that engages in an amazingly broad number of themes. It openly challenges the validity of a lot of widely-held thoughts on religion, philosophy, morality, society, economics, commerce, taxation, parenting and many other very complex topics. The author does a great job of tying so many ideas together by using the expression of the diversity of individual personality as the means. Some of the characters can take on a bit of an Ayn Rand-esque fervor for individual freedom and expression, but the author successfully avoids making them into the more extreme two-dimensional caricatures often found in hard-core Libertarian writings. This is definitely a book that will challenge your personal views on just about every topic you can imagine. If you already are a believer in Libertarian/Minarchist themes, then this is a book that will resonate well with you. If you're not, it will be a tough read that can provide some context about those that believe in this theory of optimal social organization. This is not a passive read at all. Whether you plan on it or not, you're going to be agreeing with or arguing against something on just about every other page. I found it a very intellectually stimulating story that never backed off on challenging my own beliefs. Whether you agree with the premises or not, you're still going to be impressed by the depth and breadth of thinking the author has done.

To buy this book or not? That is the question. My vote, a big – OMG - Yes!
But only if you are looking for truth. Sometimes the truth doesn’t sound so good.
My whole life I’ve been confused about things, economics, integrity, politics, war, ethics, public schools, religion, governments, taxes, etc.
Starting about five years ago I seriously got into researching these subjects and found Richard Maybury and his great books, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy, is one of them.
During my research on the internet I kept running into these articles (Freeman’s Weekly, by Paul Rosenberg) that were fantastic. I decided to try Paul Rosenberg’s monthly letter, Free-mans Perspective. This is some of the best reading, most truthful nonviolent words of wisdom I have ever read, INCREDIBLE, FANTASTIC!
That’s how I found out about this book, A Lodging of Wayfaring Men.
This book is very well written, but is so much more than just a fictional story. It is about life and truth.
If you are looking for some truth in this crazy world, this is a good place to start. It takes years for the truth to sink in, best to get started now.
Thank you Paul!

The story is interesting and the characters well drawn, but it was too unrealistic to fully capture my imagination.
The story concerns a large number of brilliant thinkers, programmers, financiers, artists and others who have noticed that the current form of government is little more than a glorified protection scheme which starts wars and impedes human progress. They note that if it is immoral for one man to take from another, it is immoral for a group, gang, or government to take from or dictate to free adults. They notice that the government is increasing its thugish intrusions into every aspect of our lives, mostly to get money so they can continue to buy votes and stay in power. Where the book was unsatisfying was in the ease with which the brilliant ones were able to circumvent rules and taxes by using unbreakable encryption on the Internet. It sounded vaguely plausible, but would not really have had a chance.
The book should be on the same shelf as Atlas Shrugged, Unintended Consequences, Moulon Labe, and others which point out our servitude to a bloated and incompetent government. It has some clear thinking and convincing arguments, but it is not a "how to get free" manual.

Being his earliest work, this is the first book of Mr. Rosenberg's that I chose to read a couple of years ago. As I was new to his writings and ideas at the time, I read it primarily as a story and missed many of the lessons within it. I have since read all of his other works and many of his subscriber letters. Now, upon revisiting 'A Lodging of Wayfaring Men', I can see plainly so many of the ideas he has expounded upon in his other writings here in this seminal work. I should not be surprised at all to find that I get more out of this book on every subsequent reading of it. I have found no other author like Mr. Rosenberg and find myself deeply indebted to him for guiding me along the paths that he has. I highly recommend his works to anyone finding themselves asking the question, "What is true Liberty?"

5.0 out of 5 stars A LodgingOf Wayfaring Men - a Perspective on Truth and Our Times
Reviewed in Canada on April 8, 2017
This book is a commentary on our times couched as a story, but although clothed as fiction, it is thinly disguised. The author is a deep thinker, and addresses many contentious issues by clarifying definitions, and developing a series of characters that do so as a matter of course. There are many worthy quotations underlined and a second reading is pending on this book as well as the sequel, Breaking Dawn. Read it if you are wondering what is really going on and why.

Great book - it provides an opportunity to review whole raft of issues and put them into context.

I think I will need to read it a second time to really get the most benefit of the issues it covers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A coherent set of rather large ideas.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2014
I enjoy thinking, analysing and developing new ways of looking at the world. My view of the world is very flexible and so is the view of my past. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the thoughts and ideas developed in this book. Many of the ideas were large, very large. I wish to thank the author for sharing them. Thanks.
