More USB ports! Who doesn't need this?

More USB ports! Who doesn't need this?
If you're reading this, you probably need more USB ports on your desktop computer. Let's face it, USB is the most important interface on your computer. Who doesn't need more? This card does exactly what it's advertised to do with an NEC controller chip. I installed two of these on an ASUS Sabertooth Z77 TUF motherboard to now have 22 native USB ports (6 of them USB 3.0.) Worked perfectly out of the box. Let's see how long they last. Each port can be further expanded to 127 additional ports with USB Hubs. That 635 more USB ports!PCIe x1 is generally available on all the new desktop computers. The box does mention Windows 7 compatibility. No need for drivers, etc. Installs automatically on boot up.There is an internal USB header, but it shares connections with one of the external ports. Meaning if you use the internal port, you'll lose one of the external ports. The MOLEX power supply plug keeps each port fully powered!

I have a personal recording studio that I built for my own use, and most of my sound interfaces use USB. I've always had a hard time getting good, low latency numbers, which matters with some recording gear, like the Presonus 1818vsl, particularly when used on Linux devices.

I did some research, and discovered that there are two driver models for the USB 1.1 layer, and they're still important on USB 2.0 cards. The models are UHCI and OHCI, and while they look the same to the user and to software, they function very differently inside - the UHCI cards make the processor do all the grunt work of being a USB port, and the OHCI cards do it themselves, in hardware. This means that UHCI cards are generating a lot more bus interrupts than OHCI cards, and are also using more CPU (processor) time.

The latter isn't very important, but the interrupt load is _very_ important, in live audio capture, because you never want your captures to be interrupted by anything else.

_This_ is an OCHI chipset card, using a chipset made by NEC of Japan. It replaced a UCHI chipset card, which was made by Intel. And while there's no meaningful difference for most applications (printing, gaming, skype, etc), there is a _huge_ difference in a recording studio environment. My latency numbers in Ardour on Linux dropped from a working minimum of 30ms all the way down to what seems to be a workable minimum of 0.7ms - a 97.7% drop, far, far more than I expected.

As far as I know, NEC and SiS make only OHCI chipsets, and Intel and VIA make only UHCI chipsets. Other chipmakers, I don't know. But this card uses NEC chips, and so far, everything is great.

    The good news:
    1) it has an green LED to tell you when you have the power cable attached properly
    2) it uses the NEC chipset

    Helpful hint:
This is a FIVE port card. One of the external ports is shared with an internal port. Don't mistake this for a six port card.

    The bad news:
    1) the enclosed cable is not long enough to reach your power cords
    2) when this card (SYBA IO Card SD-PEX20019) is inserted into the PCH Slot 4 (PCIe 4x in 8x) of Supermicro's X10SLM-F mother, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit freezes at the boot screen with the swirling four color dots. This was duplicated across two motherboards and two SD-PEX20019 cards. Removing the cards allows Windows 7 to boot properly again. Odd, this card does works perfectly with Windows 7 Pro and Supermicro's X10SLL-F, which is a reduced function version of their X10SLM-F. So, use at your own risk!

Unfortunately, I do not know of a good replacement for this. I have requested a refund from Eforcity.

This USB port expansion card is true plug and play, which cannot be said of other cards I have tried. Take it out of the box, insert it into a slot, turn on the PC and you are up and running. The card driver being imbedded on the card makes setup a non-event. The unit has worked flawlessly since day one and even houses a USB drive I use for Win7 ReadyBoost. On top of all of that, you will find it hard to beat a price of less than $20.00. I highly recommend this card to anyone who needs to add a few more USB ports to their computer.

It worked fine as a temporary EHCI controller, but I had to pull it eventually due to bluescreens. I needed to use it to install drivers due to lacking a PS/2 port on the motherboard to control the m/kb with. Windows 7 doesn't natively support XHCI so any USB 3.0+ devices need a driver for the USB controller before the ports are recognized. This puts one in a catch-22 if they have no legacy USB connectors that aren't coming from a monolithic XHCI motherboard chip. The card went in, windows detected the device and installed drivers while stuck on the login screen (due to no m/kb) and soon I had control back. Solved the problem just fine for me, and I was able to get my threadripper running with windows 7 after a few more tweaks. Had several intermittent issues with bluescreens until I used the crash dumps and tracked the crash back to the driver. Either the driver was buggy, the hardware was buggy, the hardware had issues, or the PCIe controller didn't like the card. I got my intended use out of it, so I am keeping it in case I need it in an emergency again, but I would not recommend it for anyone who doesn't need EHCI instead of XHCI.

A thick, well-made, circuit-board, build that plugs into mother-board socket perfectly.

Auto-connect to Windows, Vista-32, Internal-Software in 12 seconds flat without any effort on my part.

Card also actually includes a high-quality double-extension 4-prong power cable that was perfect in its connective friction to the board and existing power cable.

Functionally STRONG 5-Socket USB 2.0 connections allow 100% connections to all of my many hungry devices including three 2.0 Hubs; where all of these devices work absolutely perfectly! Hard to believe, isn't it!

In my experience this "perfect operation" (for either USB 2.0 or 3.0 for that matter...) is relatively rare with internal cards as well as USB Hubs.

If I am right...this is a really great value.
    Relatively low-cost for a 5-socket USB 2.0 that work @ the 100% level.
I can't help appreciate this relatively unique performance!

Like to hear from anyone who understands what I am saying here or from anyone who thinks I am making a "Mountain out of a Molehill." RB

It works without any issue. And it does not need a delicate driver in Win10. But I actually don't need this after I bought it, so I returned it in the end.
