Coombs Family Farms Vermont

Taking the long view

By choosing Coombs Family Farms pure maple products, you’re helping to sow the seeds for a healthier, more sustainable society.

Arnold Coombs maple sugaring maple sugar tree Vermont sustainable independent small family farm

Arnold Coombs, a seventh generation maple farmer and family farm advocate.

  • Our maple syrup is 100% pure, free from artificial flavors, preservatives or dyes
  • We only support using “health spout taps” and never over-tap our trees
  • Our tree farms are pesticide free
  • Our grading standards are stringent and steadfast
  • We are committed to producing high quality maple and protecting our forests

The Craft of Maple Sugaring

Coombs Family Farms has produced pure, great tasting maple syrup for seven generations by taking special care of our ancient sugar maple trees. As small family farmers, we understood there are no shortcuts producing great tasting maple syrup.

We farm our own land, produce certified organic maple syrup and package our own pure maple products. Coombs also sources maple syrup from over 3,000 small independent family farms that share our commitment to quality, environmental stewardship and sustainable forest management.

  • Environmental stewardship has been a guiding principal for our family, though in the early days, we just thought of it as being good farmers

Small is a Big Idea

At Coombs Family Farms, we support small family farms because we believe they provide more than high quality food. They help restore those lost feelings of connection and meaning by providing opportunities for us to play a better role in determining where the foods we eat come from, how our food is produced, and how it gets to our table. Small farms also strengthen rural economies, preserve important ecosystems, and help to protect a way of life that is increasingly under threat.

Organic Grade A Amber/Rich

Known for its smooth maple flavor and slightly darker than the Golden/Delicate grade. This distinctive taste is produced mid-season when the temperatures start to warm. Its unique and subtle flavor is most often used for table syrup.

Organic Maple Sugar

Organic maple sugar is the secret ingredient for adding a touch of unique character, flavor and sweetness to your favorite foods and drinks. Sweet but interesting, and not as sweet as conventional sugar.

Product Description

Grade A Dark Color, Robust Taste (formerly known as Grade B) organic maple syrup is produced as the days become warmer and longer in sugaring season. Both the color and the maple flavor are a bit stronger and more intense than the Amber Color, Rich Taste. The sugar content of the sap has dropped by now so, it takes more sap to make a gallon of syrup; hence the darker color and stronger flavors. This versatile grade is great as a topping and for cooking. Its strong maple flavor also lends itself to meat glazes, cooking recipes, and on top of waffles, pancakes, or oatmeal. for seven generations, the Coombs family has farmed and harvested without pesticides and chemicals, making organic maple healthier for the forest, healthier for the environment, and healthier for consumers.

Our large family loves maple syrup and we have purchased this brand regularly for years. We prefer Grade B over Grade A because Grade B has a stronger maple flavor, but Coombs makes excellent Grade A syrups for those who prefer their syrup a little "lighter." This syrup is organic, which we purchase whenever we can afford it, but Coombs also makes delicious non-organic syrups that are slightly lower in price and just as yummy.

Pros: This size is good for our family, and a much better value than the tiny little glass bottles in health food stores that cost a fortune. The jug is easy to pour from and doesn't make a huge mess. The flavor is great and works well in all applications: topping for waffles or pancakes, making salad dressings or barbeque sauces, baking cornbread or muffins. I also love that the product is certified organic...when I am not buying locally and cannot personally speak to the farmers producing my food I feel more confident buying certified organic stuff.

Cons: Obviously, this is slightly higher in price than non-organic maple syrup but not by much. I would also love to see this available in half gallon or gallon sizes.

Whoa! When reviewing this syrup, two things immediately come to mind: #1. Damn this is good syrup! #2. Damn this is expensive syrup! With about 10 servings per 32 oz. jug (on pancakes) and at $23.00 per jug, you're averaging a little better than $2.00 per breakfast -- just for the syrup! Well, I can't afford that ..... Yet here I am buying ANOTHER jug. It really is that good. Last week in an attempt to save money I purchased a 64 oz. jug of Hidden Springs Vermont Maple Syrup. It was $36.25 for a 64 oz. jug, which is vastly cheaper than Coombs Family Farms Organic Maple Syrup which is about $23.00 per 32 oz. jug; so you're looking at $46.00 per 64 oz. jug of Coombs compared to the $36.00 per 64 oz. jug of Hidden Springs Vermont. Unfortunately for us thrifty shoppers, the Hidden Springs Vermont is not in the same league as Coombs Organic, and even if I saved $25.00 per jug, I'd probably still go with Coombs -- that is an indication of just how much I love this syrup.

Quite simply, I've never had syrup as delicious as Coombs Family Farms 100% Pure Organic Maple Syrup Grade B. I was raised on Ms. Buttersworth and other corn syrup w/ maple flavoring brands; in fact, I didn't try real maple syrup until about 6 months ago, and now I could never go back. I've tried a few brands including Highlands Sugarworks which was good and Hidden Springs Vermont Maple Syrup which was not, yet none of them hold a candle to Coombs Family Farms 100% Pure Organic Maple Syrup.

Living in Nebraska, we can purchase real maple syrup in the store, but I really like supporting family farms directly. This way, I'm pretty sure that the products I purchase are top quality. If not, I can go to the producer. I'm no conniseuer of maple syrup like some people on Amazon are, but I can say this has a great maple flavor, the consistency is a little thinner than store bought, imitation maple syrup, but that stuff has artificial thickeners in it. Remember, this is tree sap, boiled down to reduce the water and increase the sugar content. Nothing more nothing less. This syrup makes you want to lick the plate when you're done with the pancakes. One note, they need to do something to better protect the black plastic cap on the top of the jug because mine was broken when it came. The jug is sealed well, so nothing spilled. Not a big deal, but someone picky might pitch a fit about something trivial. Buy real maple syrup whether from this company or another, you owe it to yourself.

We really like maple syrup. We try to get grade B for the darker color and stronger flavor, but grade A is also pretty darn good. This is a big jug (32 oz) and will last you a while. We transfer it to smaller containers that we can heat up for use at the table. This probably isn't a better deal than you can get at the grocery (with shipping) but it is a good value if you live far away from a larger town and can combine your maple fix with other orders to defray or avoid shipping charges.

If you aren't, you should be eating all organic or as much as possible. Most people are under the assumption that "Organic" automatically means "expensive". This is simply not true, you can easily find most organic foods to be less expensive actually. So why still eat all that processed stuff with artificial flavorings, preservatives or dyes?

Pros:
Organic (contains more minerals and nutrients)
Perfectly sweet and thick (Grade B)
Large bottle will last you a long time
BPA free container (the plastic used is not toxic)

Cons:
None

I don't know about you but we need to start supporting our farmers, not big agro companies who will cut any corner irregardless of what it does to you, the consumer. Your body and mind will be happy you bought this Coombs Family Farm Organic Maple Syrup.

I admit that for many years I only liked the "bad" stuff in the grocery store that was chock full of high fructose corn syrup and didn't have maple syrup in it! I just liked the flavor. Other maple syrups (which were Grade A) just tasted watery to me and didn't have that rich flavor I wanted.

But since we're trying to eat healthier now and getting rid of stuff with HFCS in it I wanted to find a syrup that tasted really good. And I've found it!

This syrup is really flavorful, dark in color, and very rich. I just absolutely love it. Never again will I go back to using the fake stuff when the real stuff is so incredibly tasty - not to mention better for you! Thanks Coombs Family Farms for making this. It's fantastic!
