Bought it for use at the office. We got new laptops that don't have HDMI ports but only display ports, but all the conference rooms have HDMI ports for the big monitors. The Higher ups did not want to get us adapters, as the conference rooms had computers in them already, and their solution to the need to display our desktop with our specialized software on it was remote desktop, but that has all kinds of problem many man hours (15 minutes times 10 to 20 people can add up to 4 man hours wasted) wasted trying to get that to work every meeting.
I bought this, it is only about $7, but I have saved so many man hours, heck I have saved myself hours on setup time with this device, many of my coworkers just borrow this from me now, instead of going though the problems with remote desktop.
The higher ups still don't see the value in getting one of these for everyone, but for now, I have mine, best $7 I have spent.

Using this on a Dell computer with Display Port to hook to HDMI port on the monitor using an HDMI cable. I do not know whose idea it was to come up with the Display Port specifications because every instance I have seen, you have to buy one of these and use an HDMI cable or like we do at work, we have a Display Port to DVI adapter. I have not seen a monitor yet with a Display Port and we have some really new monitors at work. Most have VGA, DVI, and/or HDMI.

Works great with my Lenovo W510 ThinkPad

After noticing my Lenovo W510 ThinkPad did not have an HDMI output, I had to find an alternate method to connect my laptop to my Samsung flat-screen via an HDMI cable. After doing some research and reading Mountain Man's review, I thought I would give this product a shot.

Upon receiving the adaptor, I simply connected it to the video disply slot, hooked up the HDMI cable, and got video. However, as stated in Mountain Man's review, I had no sound. After going into my control panel and clicking on the sound button, I quickly noticed my Samsung television as a sound source. Immediately after choosing the Samsung option, BAM..sound! I then went into the advanced options and increased the quality; very simple.

Additionally, to test the other comment concerning the teeth being an issue; I unplugged/plugged the adaptor 25+ times and it still works as new. Of course, taking my time and firmly pressing the release button while performing the simple task might make the difference. In closing, I would recommend this product to anyone looking to connect their Lenovo W510 ThinkPad to a TV source using an HDMI cable.

I read the reviews about this product and noticed the tremendous amount of people saying that the hooks would get caught in the DisplayPort and no longer dislodge. Here's how to avoid that.

Before even testing the adapter, I initially separated the cover to see if I could find a way to remove the hooks, but the only way I could see doing this would require separating the DisplayPort end from the circuit board, and then having to re-solder the connection or more. So don't worry about doing this, as I have an easier way.

If you have an emory board (nail file) or any other way to smooth metal, like sandpaper, smoothing down the hooks really takes no more than 5-10 minutes. If you're using a nail file, simply line it up so that you're contacting both hooks and start sawing away. As the hooks get worn down, you'll probably scratch the heck out of the metal for the adapter, but it shouldn't affect anything. I was able to get the hooks nearly level so that I don't even need to press the release to take it out of the DisplayPort.

As for the performance of the adapter, I personally had to use Nvidia Control Panel (the software utility for my video card) to resize the picture because it was cutting off the edges. If edges are getting cut off or the picture isn't reaching the edges, first set the other ("projector") monitor to "extend" and not "duplicate" because this allows you to change the resolutions of both monitors independently. From there, resize the other monitor to its native resolution and see if that solves the problem. If not, then your next step is to resize the other monitor's resolution until it fits in the picture.

For audio, I had to go into the Windows 7 "Playback Devices" (right click the speaker at bottom right) and then set my HDTV as the default device for audio. I haven't yet tested audio through the headphone/speaker jack, but I imagine it will be the same except that I won't need to manually select the default audio device.

For those having problems, remember that you get what you pay for. Good luck.
