Greetings and Welcome Home to All
I am a Vietnam Vet so missed the good times on the ground here in the States during this period but this is got to be the next best thing to being there
,
The 6 CD's not only brought me songs I had never heard before but the narrative from the Producers was in this set.
It was like being on the good Farmers land on those 3 days.....

The first thing I can say is buy it..............Now............It will not be long and they will be gone and you will miss a great piece of of American History.......

These recordings are just cool as hell. The Music was recorded clean and consise and bad to the bone. ( I had to add that to convince you to break your wallet open)
Now I am a Blues lover first and Jazz,
I lived for years in the Quarter of New Orleans so got into the blues there and from the time I was a kid when I met my first Beatnik's when I was like 12 or so when a local coffee shop opened. This flooded me with Memories

I liked the 60's music but you have to understand because of my being in the war and all that went on in the 60" & 70"s I just found only a few pieces of the music from back then, It was a bad memory for me

Well I am over that downer now but almost thought I had died and gone to heaven when this piece arrived........
I did allot of research before picking this group & after hearing a few cuts of Cocker from this Concert. I started reading receivings and knew that I had better act quick........

I did and honestly this I feel is the best piece I bought out of the many I reviewed ( I am open to critism but kick back, fire one up and remember when life was not the mess we have going now in the States.

Fantastic cuts one after another, hell the announcer pulls you into this group of songs.
You even hear him telling the people there to watch out for some bad acid going around.and where to go to get free hot dogs.......It's the real deal.....It's 3 days of going back to 1969.............and remembering how many fine artists we have lost since then, You have them on these CD's clear and clean and kicking ass .........

I am estatic to have this.........I think you will be also.........I bought a new one but there are a few used sets left to........
I am sorry I missed this party back in the old days and was carrying a machine gun instead of a bottle of wine and some dub's lol

I offer this In Memory of All Nam Vets and in particular my unit
The First Infantry Division ( The Big Red One)
1st/4th Calvary
Bravo Troop
U.S. Army 1967/68
God Bless all of you who did not make it to hear this great piece of sounds
Gary
Amazon you did it again Thanks

There are countless box sets of the 3 day Woodstock concert in 1969 and for me the 40th anniversary edition is best one in terms of cost and song selection. For comparison, the 50th anniversary selections of 38 discs, 10 discs, and 3 💿 are either too much or too little — either of the 38 or 10 CD’s are available only as used and are outrageously priced.

I own both the 50th 3 discs set and the 40th six CD edition. Most of the 3CD set is contained on the six CD and lacks any of Jimi Hendrix’s songs from his closing set. It functions as strictly as a greatest hit edition of the major rock bands.

The 40th anniversary has Jimi Hendrix but lacks Ten Years After and the Band (one song each on the 50th edition). It also has the lesser know acts (such as Melanie, Bert Sommer, Quill, Mountain, Incredible String Band, Johnny Winter) and generally a more generous song selection by each of the artists (it is twice the length of course). One major difference is the song selection: on both sets are two Janis Joplin songs but they are different picks. Santana’s Soul Sacrifice is on both collections but the 40th has Persuasion while the 50th substitutes Jingo instead. The 40th anniversary gives you a better feel for the 3 day event concert.

Wow! As a stand-alone overview,this is a fantastic release.

Six discs crammed (almost 8 hours-still only 1/5 of all the music) with exciting music from great artists. An 80 page large-format book, filled with wonderfully printed color and b&w photographs from the festival. A written introduction by producer Andy Zax,who originally wanted to release all the music from Woodstock-on 30 discs. And notes by Bud Scoppa detailing events over the three days and the era in general. There is a set list of the performers, and who played what instrument in this collection, and a complete list in chronological order of all the performers/songs played at Woodstock.

There's great unreleased music from artists (COUNTRY JOE AND THE FISH,Tim Hardin among others) heard on previous Woodstock releases. But listeners, finally, get to hear people/groups (the great Bert Sommer,THE GRATEFUL DEAD),plus,full-length versions of already released songs, and authentic sets (MOUNTAIN,Ravi Shankar) not heard on past releases-all in improved sound. The tracks have been remastered and are clean and crisp-yet still retain their original warmth and immediacy. Another plus is that the performances are heard in the original order as experienced at the three day festival. This brings listeners closer to what actually happened, which gives this collection even more weight.

Combine all this with Max Yasgur's complete speech to "the kids",Abbie Hoffman's attempt at politicizing the crowd and THE WHO's Pete Townshend's words to that attempt, the sometimes humorous yet very atmospheric stage announcements and sounds from the festival, and it all adds up to a stunning collection.

The packaging is similar to Rhino's hardcover "Love Is The Song We Sing:S.F. Nuggets 1965-1970" release from awhile back, except the discs are snapped in,inside the front and back covers. The book is slipped into its own inside cardboard pocket. INSIDE the pocket is a color picture of a Yasgur's dairy box and on the other side,a quote. All in all,a pretty good presentation.

Yes,there's a lot of previously released music here. THE BAND,TEN YEARS AFTER,and THE KEEF HARTLEY BAND are not represented. And once in a while the mix isn't as perfect (Arlo Guthrie's "Coming Into Los Angeles",CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL) as some listeners might wish. But what listeners do have is a collection of good, important,,exciting music from some of the greatest bands/performers of the era. Artists who came together to create one of the most important,far-reaching,musical events in our history. Something which can never be repeated.

Forget nostalgia. Sit back and listen to this still vital music. It has the power to set your feet moving and put a smile on your face. And that's a sure sign of good music. With this collection,"Woodstock nation" still lives.

P.S. As of today (08/11/09) I notice that Amazon is no longer selling this set. So if you're thinking of purchasing it-don't wait. Maybe in this instance "limited edition" actually means what it says. Also, for anyone who wants to know the tracks on this collection, they can be found on one of the discussion sites under this collection's title. S.J.

Wanted this for a long time, but was never able to find one. Bought it used. Outer sleeve showed some wear, but the CDs are pristine. I would purchase from this seller again.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 days of peace, love & (nearly all) music.

This 40th anniversary 6 CD box set release of the Woodstock festival; is
comprehensive and exhaustive, and an excellent document of the seminal 1969 festival.
Previously unreleased music and dialogue - pa,safety anouncements etc;enhance the whole Woodstock listening experience and sheds new light on various aspects of the whole three day event.
One huge advantage this release has over its predecessors is; the track listing is in chronological order,in order of the performances that took place over those three days in August 1969 - at last.
The essay in the booklet is an informative and excellent document, and the sound quality on all discs, with the exception of CD 3 - is excellent.
The performances from Ritchie Havens to Jimi Hendrix - whether previously released or unreleased; certainly makes your ears prick up a bit when listening to them.
There are many outstanding and memorable performances on this release; country Joe mac Donald,Joe cocker,Santana,Crosby,Stills,Nash (and Young),canned heat: Woodstock boogie, the incongruous Sha na na,and the legendary closing performance by the afforementioned Jimi Hendrix - wow.sorry if I've missed any out.
I also love the inclusion of performance credits for all featured artists - a music anorak's,sorry enthusiasts dream - ha ha.
Everything isn't all hunky dory though:
The failure to include I'm coming home by Ten years after, due to 'licensing restrictions',is bizarre and quite frankly infuriating.it's in both Michael Wadliegh's film and the 2 cd disc version of the 40th anniversary edition - not on the 6 CD set though, what the **** are you thinking of Rhino records.Sorry about that, rant over.
To get back on a more positive note; the final stage announcements after Jimi Hendricks' performance,i find both moving and desperate by the announcer.real people's names being announced, desperately trying to find each other and an appeal to pick up rubbish and put it in a bag to help tidy up the site - by this time the whole festival site had been declared a disaster zone! After woodstock; the hippy dream had truly come to an end - nice while it lasted though.
On Any other day,I would probably give this package 4 stars, but I'm in a reasonably good mood and I'll give it foive (sic).quote: Janis Nichols - six five special (I'm seriously digressing from Woodstock now)...
P.S. did the lost festival punters ever re-unite after that announcement was made?
