Right On Purchase

I purchased this PATA writer for my sisters old Dell 4400 she's attached to. It installed easy, just plugged it in, windows installed drivers for it and does everything it's supposed to do. It' writes CD'S, DVD'S, Dual Layer DVD'S, burns labels on Lite-On disc, etc. Would purshase again. I use a different version of this writer in my PC but it's SATA and it works great and it's fast.

PATA vs. SATA for DVD writers

This was an used item, but it performed admirably. A PATA drive (that's IDE to us old guys) is measurably slower than a SATA drive, but in the case of a DVD write, that difference is negligible. We're talking milliseconds in transfer rates as in the case of reading a DVD and transferring the information to your hard drive, which is a lot slower than transfer rates from the hard drive to the CPU. But the minimal speed difference between a PATA and SATA DVD device is hardly worth the much larger difference in price between the two.

A Lot For An Outstanding Price

This DVD drive is on the higher end of optical drive technology as far as its speeds go. Of course, multi-drives like this generally have lower CD-ROM speeds than ordinary CD-ROM drives, and I don't deny that my old CD-ROM is faster reading CD's (it's 52x rather than this Lite-On 48x). But for a DVD drive, this one has the better speeds.

Furthermore, this DVD drive comes with Nero Essentials 7 (at least mine did), which allows you to view and touch-up digital photos, record videos with your digital camera (sold separately), cut & splice clips to make movies, build video DVD's and audio CD's, and more!

This drive's compatibility is also a big plus. I've seen optical drives that don't like working with Windows XP, but this one works just fine. It uses standard Windows drivers, so you don't have to install Nero just to use the drive.

The only old-fashioned feature of this drive is its being PATA (though that takes an unreal amount off the price, or so it looks judging by the prices of the SATA ones). I got this PATA drive because 1) it was very affordable, and 2) because my motherboard only has 2 SATA slots, one of which is occupied by my hard drive and the other of which I hope to use for another hard drive.

So all the way around, this DVD combo drive is a great choice if you want a lot for a low price.

This optical drive works great in my old gateway fx530xt 7year old computer. I contacted the seller with concerns of the system recommendations. Its last Microsoft operating system is stated windows Vista. I have windows 7 professional 64 bit and just installed this optical drive and my computer read it and registered it as a dvd RW drive G drive which it should be.

The seller was helpful and read my concern and made a suggestion. All I really had to do was set my jumper to cable select. I thought I had my old ones set to master. I did not thank goodness. Cable select is a setting that that will be handled automatically according to your hardware configuration. I am happy and would recommend this seller if one needs old optical drives as that is what this is but good for an old computer like mine.

Great CD/DVD writer

I purchased this cd/dvd burner after my cd-rom gave out on my desktop. I wanted to try the LiteScribe because of the labeling capabilities that came with the burner. My first project was to burn an old family photo cd for all my siblings. The cd burning took place flawlessly. Then I created my first "paperless" cd label using the LiteSribe software. It is fairly simple to use. The LiteScribe cd's were light gold in color; the image I printed on the face of the cd was in black; there is no control over the color except for the intensity of the black color. I burned 8 cd's for my family with these special labels. Each burned label took 22 minutes. So the labeling process was more time-intensive than the actual burning of the cd, which took less that 2 or 3 minutes each. I would have liked the color to have been darker on the label. Perhaps had I chosen a silver - or even better - a white LiteScribe cd for labeling, the image would have been more pronounced. Overall, I am pleased with the burner, particularly in view of the fact that is was reasonably priced.

did not work right,movies/music playing was stuttering,draging,same cd/dvd diska played perfectly by another drive.The drive tray does not open all the time.I have Light-on dvd rom and cd re-writer that came with dell dimension 8200 since 2002 and still working with no issues.I really like Light-on,but this did not measure up to the task.

Bought same model at another site but encountered the same problems.

Excellent value and reliability

This is probably the best DVD drive that I've ever owned. It beats the heck out of the name brand HP lightscribe DVD drive that lasted me maybe 4 months before it started messing up. Granted being a smoker is hard on CD/DVD drives but on average a CD/DVD drive normally lasts me about a year before they need to be replaced. I really do need to quit smoking.

This drive works beyond my expectations and is most likely the best purchase I've made in years. It replace the CD/DVD ROM drive that my Dell E-310 was originally equipped with. That drive also worked like a champ except that the button to open the drive went bad, in the end I was using a paper clip to open that drive.

As a smoker one of the things you learn to look at is how well the drawer seals the unit. This Lite-On drive has a very good seal and should last me for awhile. I liked the drive's performance immediately, I've had no bad disks produced thus far. It works great with my Nero 8 software and the lightscribe is as good as it gets. It does take some practice to produce a decent lightscribe label, no matter who makes the drive.

I wanted to get another one of these drives to replace the HP brand name DVD drive and was puzzled when my order of the second drive was cancelled this month. The Amazon seller stated that there were problems with this drive and they discontinued the sale of these drives due to these problems. What problems? The drive works great in my honest opinion.
