Good choice to digitize LPs if you have a computer.

Ten years ago I started a project to digitize my large collection of LPs. I bought a CD recorder and used it to record a few hundred discs, but it eventually stopped working. The project lay dormant for a few years until I bought the Behringer U-PHONO UFO202. I have recorded about 50 discs so far and I am happy with the result. I have moved my turntable to my office and have connected it to my Windows 10 laptop, so I can monitor the recording as I work. The U-PHONO device does not come with any software. I downloaded the recommended free Audacity application, which works very well. One of the problems I had with the CD recorder was track-splitting: its built-in track splitting did not really work for LPs (which the CD recorder documentation admitted), so I had to manually insert track splits during the recording, which was a pain. With Audacity I can record the entire LP (two or four sides), then afterwards insert the track splits and label the tracks, using its visual display. I also use the Normalize and Click Removal effects and sometimes the Noise Reduction effect, for those well worn LPs with a lot of static. I am saving the recordings as MP3 files (which required an additional download), but you can also use the WAV or OGG formats.

Update: After recording many LPs, I realized I had used the default Windows setting for the recording format, which is 1 channel. Consequently I was recording only the left channel of stereo LPs. I didn't notice it because I had plugged my headphone into the headphone output of the device, which provided both channels, and Audacity spread the one channel over both channels on the recordings. I didn't fully realize this problem until I listened to a recording of Purple Haze, where Hendrix's vocal on the right channel was missing. So, if you are using this with Windows 10, set the recording for 2 channels: Settings -> Devices -> Sound settings -> Recording -> Microphone (USB Audio CODEC) -> Advanced -> Default Format -> 2 channel, 16-bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) -> Apply.

The Behringer UFO202 - A Splendid Audio Interface Especially at its Price

I am extremely pleased with this Behringer UFO202 Audio Interface . It works exactly as it should and its price is very low for the quality and functionality it supplies.

Now there are already 151 Amazon reviews prior to mine and most of them are thoughtful, well-written, and informative. As a matter of fact, it was reading most of those previous reviews which impelled me to buy this device. That said, I want to emphasize something for which many of the reviewers have unjustly, in my opinion, downgraded the product: any resemblance of what is claimed on the box or in the instruction manual that you WILL get, and what you actually DO get, is strictly coincidental.

You will get NO discs (when you see the size of the outer box you will realize that a disc wouldn't even fit into it!), NO "included" software and, even though in the instruction manual it is claimed that there is a TOSLink output on the unit, there is NOT.

So please just forget about any ancillaries promised. You're not going to get them.

What you DO get is a superb instrument which allows you to create excellent digital recordings from any source you wish including records. And frankly, in my opinion, that's plenty!

Thus, though the labeling on the box and the error(s) in the manual are completely inexcusable (and absolutely should be corrected), the product itself, again in my opinion, is all that matters and this one, at around $40.00, is, I believe, an amazing bargain.

The manual states that the interface has a 16-bit converter and samples up to 48 kHz but, in fact, you can (and I did) make 24-bit (or 32-bit) 192 kHz (or even higher) files depending on the software you use.

Now if you already own a USB turntable, and all you want to do is to create digital files from only your records (files which you can play on your computer or from which you can create CDs), you do not need this item. But if you don't own such a turntable, and wish to copy tapes as well as LPs, 45s, etc., then I believe that you will be quite satisfied with this device.

Its phono section works ONLY with turntables using moving-magnet cartridges. If you have a turntable with a ceramic cartridge, you would use the line-level setting on the interface. (There is a small switch which changes the inputs to "phono" - with the appropriate RIAA curve setting - and "line" which handles everything else.) If your turntable has a moving-coil cartridge, you would need to insert a pre-preamp between the turntable and the interface.

But in most cases, for recording records, all you need do is to plug the RCA outputs from your turntable into the requisite inputs on this unit and switch the unit to phono; you must also attach the ground cable to this interface. Then merely plug in the USB cable to your computer. The cable transmits the sound and also supplies power to the interface (you will see its green LED light up when you plug in the USB cable).

The manual and the box state that the unit supports Windows-XP and Windows 2000 operating systems (as well as an older Mac system) but this is incomplete. This interface, having no drivers of its own, will work with ANY computer running ANY operating system as long as that computer is equipped with a USB port.

Then use the software of your choice. As I use a GNU/Linux operating system on my computer, I use the Audacity software (which I like very much) but there are any number of other choices available. I believe that there are also many choices available for Windows and Mac computers as well. You may need to do a bit of searching (there are many available on Behringer's site but I believe that you can find more, and more satisfactory ones, just by doing an ordinary search on the Internet) and then you may need to practice with the software of your choice but I'm certain that the results will be as satisfactory to you as they are to me.

Please note that I strongly recommend that you try "free" software (such as Audacity) first; in my experience, the free software is AT LEAST as good as most "pay" ones - and often even better. If you use free software, then the total cost to you is just the price of the unit itself (and any necessary cables you would have to buy if you do not already have them). But of course whether you use free software or software for which you must pay would be your own choice.

This unit arrived just a couple of days ago; I have had time to copy only one LP. But the recording turned out perfectly. I had to make one or two "test" recordings to find out the proper settings in the Audacity software, but attaching and using the Behringer UFO202 itself was completely straightforward. Almost anyone could do it.

My digital copy of my record sounds EXACTLY the same as the LP itself. Perhaps some "golden-eared" person MIGHT be able to distinguish between them but, if the test were effected in a double-blind fashion, I'll bet that he/she could not. I certainly can't hear any difference! Note that, as I mentioned above, I made a 24-bit 192 kHz FLAC file from my record.

I own several other Behringer products: the Behringer MICROPHONO PP400 Ultra-Compact Phono Preamp , the Behringer UCA202 Audio Interface , the Behringer UCA222 U-Control Ultra-Low Latency 2 In/2 Out USB Audio Interface with Digital Output And Downloadable Software Bundle , and the Behringer HPS3000 Studio Headphones .

Some people have "knocked" Behringer for poor customer service and I have no doubt about their unfortunate experiences. But I myself have had NO problems whatsoever with any of my Behringer products so I have never had the need to contact Behringer. If you buy their products from Amazon, as I did, and if you were to have a problem, you merely contact Amazon and they will effect an exchange or refund, as you wish (they will even arrange to pick up the product at your home if you desire) - all at no cost to you.

But I have found that, with all of my Behringer products (and I own six pair of those headphones), their manufacturing and quality control are absolutely first-rate. So are their designs - and so are their prices!

So, in conclusion, I should like to say that, if you wish to easily create digital files from your records and/or tapes, I strongly recommend that you consider this Behringer UFO202 Audio Interface. While you could plug the outputs from a tape deck directly into the microphone input on your computer, the resultant sound files will generally be inferior. And you cannot plug a turntable directly into a microphone input and expect anything good. So, for its low price, this device affords you the opportunity to make the music on your records and tapes available to you in digital format; playing these digital files exclusively ensures that your originals will not be damaged or worn further.

I have some 60's vinyl that I wanted to convert to digital. Some of it cannot be bought or at least I could not find it. I downloaded the Audacity software and cannot knock it since it was free but a little confusing to use. Now I am using an old XP laptop so old tech. I had to play around with the input and output to even get it to record anything and help did not really explain any of this or at least I could not find it. I am not trying to get a professional recording. The vinyl is in good shape but you get some pops which is fine with me. My only complaint is the volume level and I am not sure if it is the converter or the software. The volume just does not seem consistent.

My first attempt was two double albums. I mistakenly assumed that I would record one side then click stop. Go to the second side and so on. What this did was record four tracks and they all overlaid each other so I tried recording one side, saving, closing the session and start a new one and it worked fine.

Over all I am satisfied because I can take my vinyl with me on a usb in my truck. If you are more tech savy that I am, I am sure you could get better results.

This device works fine - don't be put off by reviews that say it gives only one channel instead of stereo. There are settings in Windows that need to be correct for this to function properly. I suppose more detailed instructions could be provided with it. In order to get Windows 10 working correctly, here are steps you may need to follow:

1. Connect the UFO202 to USB port.
2. Click on "Start", type "Control panel" and select Control Panel desktop app.
3. Select "Sound".
4. Select "Recording" tab.
5. Double-click Microphone USB Audio CODEC (NOT the other microphone devices). If it's not there, try a right-click in this window and ensure "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices" are checked.
6. Select "Advanced" tab.
7. In the drop-down you may well find the default Windows setting of "1 channel 16 bit etc". Select a 2-channel mode (I use 16 bit 48000 Hz).
8. Ensure the two boxes in Exclusive mode below this are both checked,
9. Click "OK", and exit from control panel.
10. Restart Audacity and in it select "Transport" in the top menu bar, and then "Rescan audio devices".
11. Try recording now, and it should be in stereo.

Other criticisms refer to the Audacity software. This is well worth investing a bit of time and trouble to learn, and is a very powerful free recording tool (great for recording streamed audio from the internet too!) As a quick guide to using it with the Behringer, this is what I do:

a. Ensure UFO202 is connected to USB and Audacity is not running.
b. Start Audacity.
c. Set device toolbar to the following: Windows WASAPI – Microphone (USB Audio Codec) – 2 (Stereo) Recording Channels – Speakers (High Definition Audio Device).
d. Click "Pause" button" and then "Record" button.
e. When ready, start source (e.g. LP) and click "Pause" button to start recording.
f. Use "Pause" button to temporarily pause recording.
g. Click "Stop" button when recording has finished.

You can then save your recording in whatever format you want - ideally FLAC in my view.

One more little thing: Initially I permanently connected the Behringer to the "Record out" terminals on my amplifier, but realised that it was degrading the amplifier output when NOT also connected to the computer's USB port, and hence not powered up - a quirk of input impedance or something within the Behringer I guess. So now when not using it I disconnect BOTH ends of it - from the amplifier and the PC.

So in conclusion a very useful device which works well, once you have mastered your connections to it! I do think instructions like this could be published with it.

Like other reviewers I have been digitising my vinyl record collection, but I got a distortion on the playback sound I knew was not the records. Having eliminated the turntable and software as culprits, I came to the conclusion that the sound card in my computer just wasn't very good. As I could not replace the internal sound card, my computer is too small, I looked for external options. Enter the Behringer UFO 202, from the product description and user comments it seemed the answer to my prayers.
So I coughed up the money and crossed my fingers. And I am so glad I did. The Behringer has done everything I hoped for and more. There is no distortion, no hiss, the sound is beautifully clear. The sound my much loved records deserve. I am using Golden Records vinyl conversion software, which I already had, and I have had no problems with installation or operation.
As if that wasn't enough the quality of the sound on the other music on my computer, my exCDs and downloads, is hugely improved. I only have a cheap audio system but the increase in depth, clarity, sharpness and immediacy is just fantastic. The 202 will now be a permanent attachment to my computer. I have not even looked at the music creation and editing software that came with it as my focus has been on recording my albums, but I am sure it will provide many hours of enjoyment in the long winter evenings.
A word on Audacity. At first glance it does seem completely baffling (at least it did to me) but once you get the hang of it it is a very good program. There is a quick video guide to the basics on Behringer's website, and there is a small library's worth of tutorials on YouTube.
Praises also for Juno Records, the supplier, I ordered the 202 online over a weekend and it arrived the following Tuesday morning. Top class service.

The UFO202 is an excellent piece of kit. Interfaces well with both line and phono outputs. I use it with a Ortofon mm cartridge. The head phone output is good. The Audacity software you need is free to download is very good but needs a bit of practice. You get excellent copies to burn to CD. It works well with Windows 10. Would recommend to anyone wishing to copy and restore 45rpm,33rpm records and old cassette tapes.First class product at a good price.
