Not sure why I have this in my list to review. I never purchased this item, but may consider it in the future.

Lasted only a year. Nice and bright led when the technology was fairly new. Shame the battery wont hold a charge anymore. Tried taking apart to replace battery, dont bother unless you have a battery specialist store near by. One was fairly close to me, but by time I was gonna go that way, had misplaced pieces. Kept for another year in hopes of finding parts. Moved and threw it out.

have not used the solar panel yet, but one wall charge has lasted a good while already, have not recharged yet. very bright and rugged design, have to search for the on button and was a little dissapointed that it has a lead battery as opposed to a lithium. Makes it a little heavy and don't know how long it will last. THe solar panel has no appartant way to mount, so i'm not sure where or how to mount it. Although the panel appears to be well made and rugged. Liked the idea that it was designed for the third world.

I have only used this lantern for a month, in the home, and for van-camping. The D Light has a very clever, compact design, allowing several different ways to place the lamp: it can be hung, it can be carried, set on its base, or laid on its side to angle above the horizontal (change a flat tire?), and has four brightness settings to effect different lighting solutions. The light is flood rather than spot, so you can light up an area evenly. I find the lowest "night light" setting, which only lights up a picnic table sized area to be the most useful and efficient for me. It has an adequately long lead from the solar array to the lamp, facilitating charging. The cell phone charger is a nice feature which charges faster than the after-market plug-in that I originally bought for the phone. It even has an indicator to let you know its state of charge.
My primary use for this unit is for van-camping, and it is nearly perfect for that. I would find it marginal for backpacking because of its bulk (the charger adds weight and bulk), but for home emergency, camp (it has an AC charger as well), vehicle, and camping use, it is a remarkably good tool.
I have no experience to date with its durability or longevity, but it feels solid, packs well with nothing to snag or break off, and so far, works well.
I wish every other gadget I owned was this well engineered.

This great little unit arrived fully charged, and I immediately plugged in my cell phone it it began charging it. I love it! Really nice bright light on it, it will be wonderful for emergencies, and I very pleased to support such a socially responsible company. It is cheap for what it does, and it helps support the company's research to make it available to less developed countries. Here's what TIME magazine had to say about d.light when they featured them as a Responsibility Pioneer: "It's a playful name for a serious company: D.light Design sells $10-to-$25 solar-powered lamps in more than a dozen countries where people lack electricity and often spend a lot on kerosene, which gives off noxious fumes. D.light's latest model also recharges phone batteries. But one of CEO Sam Goldman's goals is to find ways to lower the cost even further. "I'm not satisfied with $10," he says. "The real customers that we started this business for can't afford that."

Ordered this as a backup just in case. Charged it as recommended, first time use=complete fail. The battery is non-existent, charge it as indicated and yet the light still won't work, nor will it charge anything, oh unless it's PLUGGED IN. Battery says no juice recharge again until it indicates charged yet it still won't work, ad nauseum. An extension cord does everything this item does, and better, and at maybe 1/10 the cost.

Accolades to D.Light! I don't usually take the time to write reviews on products, but this lantern is worthy of some praise. It comes almost fully charged so that it takes only a few minutes to "top off" the battery with power if you plug it in the first time. The 4 light settings are great for power conservation and the unit is very lightweight and has a great ergonomically correct handle. There is also a strap for hanging the unit. The cell phone charger is a great feature in a power outage, but none of the tips fit my Nokia. I would like to know where to get additional tips. The solar panel is powerful. Even on a cloudy overcast day, it still charges well. The light is powerful enough on the lower settings to read a book at bedside, and works as a nice "task light" on the higher settings. It really is bright enough to light an entire bedroom with soft white light. The kids fight over who is going to take it bed with them. I will definitely purchase more of these. I hope they last a long time!

This seemed like a great idea... however, after not very long, it no longer took a charge. Very let down by this... And the other products I purchased (lanterns) all filled with water, despite being made for outdoors/camping/3rd world. Redesign needed.
