Companero: The Life and Death of Che Guevara Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

By the time he was killed in the jungles of Bolivia, where his body was displayed like a deposed Christ, Ernesto "Che" Guevara had become a synonym for revolution everywhere from Cuba to the barricades of Paris. This extraordinary biography peels aside the veil of the Guevara legend to reveal the charismatic, restless man behind it.

Drawing on archival materials from three continents and on interviews with Guevara's family and associates, Castaneda follows Che from his childhood in the Argentine middle class through the years of pilgrimage that turned him into a committed revolutionary. He examines Guevara's complex relationship with Fidel Castro, and analyzes the flaws of character that compelled him to leave Cuba and expend his energies, and ultimately his life, in quixotic adventures in the Congo and Bolivia. A masterpiece of scholarship,
Companero is the definitive portrait of a figure who continues to fascinate and inspire the world over.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

With the partial opening of Cuban archives to foreign scholars and increased access to Cuban historical individuals come back to back two important new biographies of the Argentinean-born Cuban revolutionary leader and ideologue, Che Guevara. First there was American journalist Jon Lee Anderson's Che Guevara (LJ 4/15/97) and now this one, by one of Mexico's leading political writers and a professor of international affairs (New York Univ.). Though the two volumes cover similar territory, they are not the same. Anderson's volume is the larger and occasionally includes greater detail on aspects of Che's life, but Casta?eda takes more of an academic approach and is better at placing Che in the context of Cuban and world history. Anderson writes journalistically, while Casta?eda is perceptive and creative. This biography is an important addition to our understanding of Che and the Cuban revolution and will be valuable to any library interested in the history of the 20th century.

From The New Yorker

Che's life following the revolution's triumph was a slow accretion of wreckage, and it is in the narration of this collapse that Companero, Jorge Castaneda's beautiful and passionate biography, is most lucid.... Castaneda is as unflinching as his hero: he has searched CIA records and the recollections of Guevara's closest comrades in order to prise away layers of after-the-fact justifications and embellishments of the Che legend. In the process, he makes Ernesto Guevara understandable at last, and his predicament deeply moving.

This was a reorder because the first sent to me was a graphic book and not text. It came quickly (used) and exceeded my expectations.

What an amazing book! I recommend it to literally everyone who encounters me reading it. Written very academically, but not stuffily, this book is empathetic and well-researched. Not only that, but it references numerous sources that are also well-renowned, as well as some that aren't as popular, but present possibly conflicting viewpoints. The combination of hard research and personal interviews, plus the excellent pacing and placement of chapters are captivating. I did not put this book down until it was finished, and I'm currently reading it again.

Biographies are always important to read, especially those of high-profile figures who have rarely been presented objectively. This book does that about Guevara, but still manages to shy away from being too clinical or boring. Castaneda presents Ernesto Guevara as an exceptional figure, but emphasizes his humanity and failings throughout, making him much more relatable, especially for readers frustrated with the ethical and social failings of the contemporary political climate.

This biography gives a detailed account of the life of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, from his childhood days in upper-middle class Argentina to his death during a completely hopeless attempt at guerrilla war in Bolivia.

Che was a complex, and certainly a driven man. He would not let impossible odds or his sometimes poor health allow to stop him. Casteneda explains very well how both his character as well as his experiences in Latin America shaped him that way. The Mexican historian succeeds in giving an excellent account of both the historical events that Che was a part of and of Che's psychological states motivating him to act in these events. The question when and how Che was transformed from a talented son of the privileged class in Argentina who liked to travel to a fierce fighter for the liberation of the proletariat is pondered at length. Along the way, the reader learns a lot about Latin American history and politics. Che's relationship with the other Cuban revolutionaries, especially Fidel Castro, as far as it is accessible for an outsider, is elaborated on.

This book is scholarly written but nevertheless very readable. Casteneda clearly has sympathies for the subject of his biography, but he is critical when it is warranted. Particularly, he points out his failures as an economist and as a military strategist: the efforts of exporting the revolution to the Congo and to Bolivia were ill conceived from the beginning, as the popular support in these places was not comparable to pre-revolutionary Cuba. Despite all these deficits, the spirit of solidarity with the world's poor and suppressed, that Che lived, impressed me as a reader and seemed to have impressed Casteneda. He finishes with a look at Che as a cultural icon, his face printed on countless T-shirts, and on the inspiration he provided for many. After reading the last page of this book one is tempted to shout whole-heartedly "Hasta la victoria siempre!"

The book contained some very interesting detail. However a very difficult read. The Author clearly adores Che and only addresses the romantic version of a hero. He doesn’t address any of the questionable and controversial aspects of the myth. He goes into brutal detail on insignificant matters but brushes over the revolutions infancy and seizure of control. Finally he is apologetic and brushes off any flaws based on circumstances and his affliction with asthma.

the book is quite detailed and well researched. the author does a good job of citing his sources and noting where there are disagreements among them. imho, i think his use of "without due process" when referring to executions carried out by che was a wise one. the use of the word "murder" would have been a biased one. those against che would have liked it, but those in favor of che would have disagreed. the use of this rather noncommittal, but factual phrase let's the reader decide.

i especially liked the analysis written about castro's dilemma of che's bolivian expedition. the author gives many points of view in regard to castro's aid and rescue options. many points to ponder regardless of your political views.

There are many Che Guevara biographies in print, but this is one of the top choices. Jorge Castaneda is a gifted writer, who besides sifting through the historic facts and fictions about Guevara, is also capable of linking the meaning of Guevara's aspirations to the greater significance of the cultural upheavals of the late 1960's. It is a meticulously researched book, with lots of quotes and insights provided by individuals who were first-hand observers or participants in the Cuban Revolution, the Congo and Bolivian campaigns. Jorge Castaneda has done an excellent job in providing an insight into this complex personality. Recognition is also merited by the excellent translation of the original Spanish text. Highly recommended.

This is absolutely the most academic, objective read on Che I have come across. Most books either romanticize this complex, dashing, revolutionary communist leader, or they speak from personal tragedy experienced, directly or indirectly, from " the brains behind the cuban revolution". However, this author works from copious research, givIng the reader almost overwhelming footnotes, which makes for an active read as opposed to a leisurely read for recreation. You will definently have to work to grip the information given, but if you want an unbiased view of this argentine guerrilla, this book is a must read and more intellectually honest then any other bio on Che.

5.0 out of 5 stars The life of a great revolutionary leader.

Although I was aware of his life, this book I wiritten with attention to detail and in respectful context bringing light to Che’s amazing life. The book also references to malevolus rumours about him which are false and also explains some of his actions that are expected in a revolutionary state. Comrade Che’s memory is eternal.

Bought this book as I was keen to broaden my knowledge on the magnificent Ernesto 'Che' Guevara. There are many books out there on Che and I was a bit confused as to what one to choose. I didn't have much knowledge on Che Guevara and have always found his life fascinating so I was very fussy as to which book to read to give me a good insight into Mr. Guevara's life. After reading many reviews and consulting a few friends and family I decided to choose this one. Thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish as it gives an interesting and detailed account of the trials and tribulations of Mr Guevara. Some of the politics was a bit confusing but I think another read of the book it will become much clearer. Excellent

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent biography but highly subjective
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 30, 2014
This is a decent biography of Che in that it covers the base points and raises questions that may, or may not, be answered in the fullness of time.

On the other hand it also full of innuendo, gossip and tittle tattle, particularly as it relates to the subject's personal life, and is replete with conclusions that have little or no basis in fact, simply in the author's interpretation. An example is the author's interpretation of a letter Che sent to his mother on his first lengthy trip overseas. Minor but irrelevant inclusion of the author's opinion nonetheless.

The author opines that Che is responsible for the many wasted lives, those inspired by him who were to lay down their own lives after his death, he calls it Guevara's debt to history. This is a classic of revisionists, particularly of the chattering classes of the leftist intelligentsia who leave behind their former beliefs and idealism. Anyone who rose up and started a revolution or rebellion is held responsible for all the future bloodshed, the young lives needlessly wasted, and so it commonly goes on along those lines.

A worthwhile read, some interesting points and observations, but also very subjective and filled with the author's 20/20 hindsight.
