While pricing out parts from a suggested build (go to maximumpc daht calm and search $647 pc) for my wife, I was pleasantly surprised to see this quad core selling at the same price as the dual core originally suggested. Yes, the updated article suggests a 620 quad, but it was dual first. This is even faster than the 620 in that list now, and the price is the same.
When you consider the fact that these chips are so crazily upgradeable due to the chipset they work with, it will soon dawn on you that this bargain can become another upgrade wonder with the hexacore Phenom II X6 1090T in the future if you choose. Prices will only drop here, folks. The stock cooler that comes with it is plenty effective for non-overclockers. Installation was simple for even a newb like me with the enclosed instructions.
I can't believe my wife, who only wanted to spend a few hundred bucks on a computer, is driving a quad core for a fraction of what I spent on a vastly inferior build years ago...the hollowed out corpse of that computer enshrining her new baby. GET YOURSELF THIS BARGAIN IF YOU VALUE A PRICE TO FEATURES RATIO IN YOUR FAVOR.
Very fast processor - I can't believe that this is the kind of performance you can get for the money these days! Four cores does wonders for multi tasking, 95W model keeps the power consumption and heat down. haven't tried OCing it yet, but there is almost no need to!
AMD still gives you the best price/performance ratio. The Athlon II X4 630 is a nice cool running chip that makes for a great primary or backup system. I'm using the Asus Crosshair III board with an AMD Phenom X4 965. The second box I built as a hot standby uses the same MOBO with the 630 at a lower cost, but is still very capable.
I used this processor to upgrade the AM2+ Athlon II X2 5050e 2.6Ghz 45W processor that was in my home theater PC. The previous processor was great in that it could handle any kind of video processing I could throw at it and at 45W TDP it was "green". However, the general experience of navigating in Windows Media Center, browing pictures, etc. left a lot to be desired. I wasn't sure if this new processor would truly make a difference but I am blown away. It's very snappy now. Displaying the picture screensaver when listening to music is almost instant now whereas before it would take a good 15-20 seconds to display and then would hang a lot so it was obviously CPU intensive. WEI for this processor in my system in 7.0. Awesome.
Put it into the asus m4a89gtd pro without any problems. Booted up right away. I was able to overclock this easily to 3500 without any problems for the last month. I haven't tried to OC any higher as of yet.
Arrived a week earlier then it said! Thermal paste is small and perfect amount for install but don't expect to have extra after you install cpu but other then just a great item!
