  • Enter your model number to make sure this fits.
  • Connect your older Mac without an HDMI output to an HDMI display using this Mini DisplayPort and USB Male Audio to HDMI Adapter from Monoprice
  • This adapter converts the mini DisplayPort video output to HDMI. Stereo (2-channel) audio is obtained through the USB connection and is mixed with the video to produce a complete HDMI audio/video signal.
  • Note that this adapter does not support more than 2-channel audio. Additionally, it is unidirectional and therefore cannot convert HDMI to mini DisplayPort signals. Finally, on some Macs the video connector blocks the adjacent USB port.

This adapter connects your Macbook Pro with mini displayport to your TV via HDMI with audio. With this cable, there is no need to buy an extra cable or speakers for the audio to transfer from the laptop to the TV.
To hook up: plug the minidisplay port cable into laptop for video to TV. Plug in usb part of adapter to laptop to tansfer audio to TV. Connect adapter to HDMI cable and HDMI cable to the TV. Make sure TV is set for the appropriate HDMI cable slot your HDMI cable is plugged in to.

I found my adapter slightly cheaper on EBAY, but thought I'd review this here since I buy a lot on Amazon & look here for reviews and buying advice. Thought I may be able to help out someone else.

I had to make a few adjustments on my laptop settings after the cables were connected. To do this:

1) click on the apple icon, system preferences, displays, arrangement, then check the box for "mirror displays". This should transfer the video from the laptop to the TV.

2)click on the apple icon, system preferences, sound, output, then click on usb sound device. This should transfer the audio to the TV. Now, everything should be ready to go.

I am new to a Mac laptop & it took me awhile to figure this out, so I hope this helps someone else!

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and have been trying to find a way to transfer both video and audio to my panasonic TV. I'll cut to the chase, I spent three months calling Apple stores, Best Buy, and various other electronic stores to try to figure out how I could transfer both audio and video to the TV in an easy way and every time they told me that it wasn't possible. It was very hard for me to believe that in 2010, on a MacBook Pro I couldn't stream a movie from my laptop to the TV without hooking it up to the TV like it was on life support (with all different kinds of wires).
BUT, after searching and searching I finally found this product mentioned and I was lucky enough to find it on Amazon, I ordered it and today I was watching You Tube and Hulu on my 42 inch TV (beautifully by the way, the picture is just as clear on the TV as it is on the lap top) and all with only one cable. Well kind of, I hook my HDMI cable up to the converter and that's it.
I will admit that I've only had this for one night, a lot could happen with this over the next few days, but as far as the satisfaction of finally finding the product that did the job this is easily worth 5 stars.
By the way, for anyone else that was in the same boat that I was in, read the previous review about how to adjust the settings to get the video stream and audio stream to the TV, it was right on and only took me about 30 seconds to get the job done once I read them.
Update: A year and a half later and this thing is still working beautifully. I do notice that the lap top get's unusually hot when running with this. I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but it's never been so bad I was worried.

First I'd like to say that the cable works. It does what was promised, bringing audio and video to HDMI. However, I gave it three stars because
1. The plastic casing on the minidisplay port plug broke after less than a week of light usage. I'll probably glue it together, but I wish it were more sturdy.
2. The adapter grows hot during usage. I don't worry but it can get annoying.
3. I can't adjust audio volume with my computer, only the TV. VLC and Mac OS are unable to change the output volume while iTunes (using the internal volume slider) can. If the cable supported volume adjustment then it would be a winner.

I don't regret my purchase, but if you're looking to buy one just be aware of these shortcomings.

This product works great for me. I have a 2009 model MacBook Pro and also use bootcamp on the same computer with Windows 7. I have no major problems with either operating system sending signal over to my TV (32" 720p LCD Coby). The only issues I have is that when the computer falls asleep, I usually have to unplug both cables from my computer and plug them back in to get picture on the TV again. Also, it takes up one of my only two USB ports on my computer.

If you are considering this product, please be aware of two things:
1. This is not just for any MacBook, it is specifically for one's with the same Mini Displayport and models before 2010. From what I read online, the mini displayport on the 2010 models can transmit sound. The 2009 models have to use a separate audio output, hence the USB cable on this product.
2. The quality of the video depends upon the least efficient piece. If you buy this product, a quality adapter, but have a crappy TV or a crappy HDMI cable, everything might appear to be having issues. It is not that pricey to get decent cables anymore here on Amazon so look around for a good HDMI cable if you don't already have one. Also, my TV is 720p and a cheap TV so the picture isn't near as sharp as I'd like, even after calibration. Even so, I am satisfied with it as it is good enough for the price I paid for the television ($250).

This product does exactly what it is intended to do and it does it well, but for whatever reason the one that I got basically shut off with no provocation after about 8 minutes. It would transfer the video and audio out of my macbook pro seamlessly into my Sony HDTV through the HDMI cable but without touching or changing anything, it would just shut itself off mid-video and not come back on.

I may have gotten a defective product but I returned it for a refund since I couldn't watch anything longer than 8 minutes. Will probably try to find this from a different seller.
