Much better than expected.
4 out of 5 stars
Much better than expected.
Installation:The setup only took about 10 minutes, however it wasn't user friendly. It wasn't a the type of setup where it was "Run, click next, click finish, and enjoy". It was more like "download new drivers and run multiple times on top of older ones (supplied by the CD) and guess whether the right drivers were installed. There are also errors that show while installing, but they didn't affect anything (misleading errors). Installing the drivers after plugging in the docking station took about 5 minutes. Overall, i wouldn't expect a person who is not very tech savvy to have a fun time installing this, but at the same time it wasn't terribly difficult.Usage:The mouse cursor was very snappy and responsive, however loading complex images were a bit laggy. It was possible to play light games that are not at full screen, but playing an actual game on this monitor reveals bad frame rates of anywhere from 10 to 23 fps. This Docking station is great for everything but games. For normal usage it will not feel same as a direct connection from a monitor to the back of a desktop, but it is 100% usable and the lag wasn't noticeable unless you looked for it. I currently have this hub powering one of the monitors on the dual monitor set up for my surface pro (running windows 8.1 pro) (yes it runs fine on windows 8). I would absolutely recommend this to anyone wanting a second monitor for their notebooks. I am personally considering purchasing this again for triple monitor. The Link to newer drivers on the Targus website:http://targus.com/us/driver_support ----> download all windows drivers and install the drivers from the disk and these drivers to avoid as many errors as possible.

Overall 4 stars for this product, with the only noticeable issue being a minor compatibility problem with my voice over IP phone.
    The Good:
The setup was very easy. As long as you remember to load the drivers and software on your laptop BEFORE you attempt to connect the product, you should not have any particular issue.
I installed the product first on a Dell Inspiron n5110, then on an HP Pavillion dv9000. Both times no issues. Please make sure to visit the Targus site for the latest software/drivers update after installing from the disk.
I was concerned with the video portion as I am using an external monitor of 27 inches in an extend type of settings. In other words my workspace being divided across 2 screens, the laptop and the external 27", but it performed flawlessly.
    The OK:
Unlike other docking stations where you place your laptop/notebook on top then press down to establish a connection, this unit, which should really be called a port replicator necessitates you to plug in your USB cable and power supply cable into the laptop. Of course you can also be draining the battery on the laptop and in this case you have only the USB cable to connect.
This is not as easy as pushing down on a docking station, but after all, this type of unit is meant for computers that are not equipped with a port underneath. Typically, laptops for Business will have the port underneath, allowing the use of a docking station, where Home or Residential type of laptop won't, which makes all the value of this Targus product.
    The Bad:
After a few uses and in particular when I had to reboot the machine after the installation of new software, I noticed that I was losing my network connection. The way my setup works is through a voip phone. In other words, my network/internet cable comes from the wall to my phone, then another cable goes from the phone to the Targus USB Docking station. If I bypass the phone it seems to work well, but if I want both my phone and my computer to have access to the network, I need to reboot my computer twice after a new software install.
Just wanted to mention that as it could be important for those of you with a similar setup, otherwise, this product is great and works well.

This is awesome. I have a Dell Latitude E5420 and it works flawlessly to quickly connect to a second monitor in Full HD, output all audio, automatically connect my WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB Portable External Hard Drive, Black (WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN) [New Model] and start a backup thanks to some awesome software I use, PLUS I can put a Logitech Unifying adapter in here and use this awesome Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 with Built-In Multi-Touch Touchpad, Black, and more! I love how seamless it is!

Also, I used this with my grandma's HP 15 Touch laptop at school! She's a retired teacher but she volunteers at a private Christian school as a teacher. She has macular degeneration, and the fact that she can hook this up to her Samsung UN28H4000 28-Inch 720p 60Hz LED TV (2014 Model) in seconds seamlessly is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Great job Targus for making this product so user friendly!!!

I do, however, have a few complaints. First, when connected, ANY audio is outputted by USB, even if no speakers are connected. This needs to be fixed. Next, the price is great, but even at this price, HDMI IS A MUST! Not many monitors have DVI-D, and DVI cables are expensive. The DVI to VGA adapter was a nice bonus, but VGA isn't High Definition. An HDMI port would be expected in the next model, and if not, at least include an HDMI to DVI adapter with it as well. My final caveat is that there is no USB 3.0 or at least ESata. ESata isn't to be expected, but with no USB 3.0, how's a guy to connect an external hard drive? USB 2.0? That's too slow. The dock itself should connect by USB 3.0, and there should be at least one USB 3.0 adapter.

All of this in mind, it's still a great deal and a great price. It's a beautifully designed product and it's worth the $22. Targus may reach out to me with any questions or concerns, and if there is a future model, I would look forward to providing my honest opinion in exchange for a free or reduced price product. I purchased this at full retail price, and I was not given any incentive to write a good review. Thank you. Links to my setup are enclosed.

It worked fine for a couple of months, purchased in Sept. 2013. Now a few months later had to unplug it from my Dell Studio XPS (win vista). No signal being displayed on my external monitor and laptop monitor. Had to purchase a USB adapter to plug all peripherals into just to get things working. Monitor still doesn't work and can't return the item (only had one month to return). Sound never worked through docking station from the beginning.

Looks like I'm returning this one for mom for another one or a different one. We have one running on my dad's notebook and have had really no problem with it. But mom's....

My parents set it up on my mother's notebook so that she would have the use of her monitor full-time plus the usb, network connection, etc. that are attached. The three of us worked on getting it working to no avail, everything but the video worked, I spent about 3-4 hours today working on it (via TeamViewer), downloaded the latest drivers/software for the video card in her Dell Inspiron 1545, all the software/drivers for the docking station, including the most recent DisplayLink software so that it would be the most recent all around, nothing helped. The monitor works well directly plugged into the notebook but does not work at all through the docking station. So it looks like I'm doing a return for her and deciding do we take another chance on another one of these or do I try a different brand. Frustrating for me as I wanted it to work for her and not have a lot of problems.
