This novel combines fantasy and mystery (my two favorite genres), and it does it beautifully. The characterizations are vivid and original - they all feel like real people, and act in realistic ways. Some reviewers mention that it takes a while to warm up to the main character, Portier; to me this is a tribute to the author's art. Portier is a reserved, cautious, and highly analytical person; not the kind of guy you could warm up to in five minutes. He struggles with self-doubt because he has failed at the one goal most important to him, but he clings to the hope that he still has a purpose in this life, and doggedly tries to find what that purpose might be. A very human character, and for me one of the highlights of the book.

The setting is wonderful and beautifully drawn, kind of Italian Renaissance with magic woven in. The excitement of new scientific discoveries and the struggle of new paradigms with old is well captured. The language of the book is part and parcel with that setting - somewhat old-fashioned and courtly. If you can read Tolkien or Arthur Conan Doyle without tearing your hair out, it should be no problem for you. For me it complemented the setting nicely, and gave Portier an authentic voice.

As a mystery it was well-plotted, never lagging in the pacing despite being somewhat densely written (lots of names and places in this one, you have to pay attention). All clues were properly spelled out for the reader (sometimes too many of them), and the solution followed logically from known information. Enough ends were wrapped up to make a satisfying conclusion; enough were left loose to suggest the possibility of another book.

I read this book on the Kindle, and found no problems with the formatting or the table of contents. My one quibble is that the Kindle version did not have the gorgeous cover shown above. I love to ogle book covers after I've read the book; getting a simple text cover was disappointing.

It's always a joy to discover an author that a) excels, and b) has already published lots of books. Ms. Berg will be getting much Kindle custom from me in the near future. :)

Wonderfully Magical!

As a new reader of Carol Berg's works, I wasn't sure what to expect since this was my first foray into her writing. The Spirit Lens had been recommended to me here on Amazon due to past books I had read and enjoyed and I wasn't disappointed.
I do have to admit that it took me just a little time to get into the story, a great deal of characters are introduced in a very short span of time and as this is a fantasy some of Berg's words are of her own creation, but I quickly became captivated by the world of Sabria, its magic and intrigue.
I adored the idea of a failed magician as the hero of the tale. Librarian to the illustrious Collegia Magica (College of Magic), Portier De Savin-Duplais who is also a distant relation to the king serves as a fair and objective story teller. He bares the mark on his hand of one who carries the line of magical blood in his veins, though he has proven to be magically impotent. He is enlisted by his powerful relative, the King who disdains magic, to uncover the persons behind the plot to kill him when his original investigator goes missing. Sworn to secrecy and unable to reveal his role as investigator, Portier must navigate the false and treacherous waters of Sabria's court all whilst peeling back the layers of secrecy contained there. His chief suspect is the Queen, whom his cousin insists is innocent. Needless to say, Portier soon finds himself tangled in a very tricky web and in great personal danger.
Many unpredictable twists of plot unfold and interesting characters are revealed, making this a very enjoyable and rich book.
As a side note, after reading this tale, I went on to read Berg's Transformation (a much earlier work in a different series) which I loved, though it is completely different from the Spirit Lens in many ways. I highly recommend the Spirit Lens if you like magic, fantasy and adventure, just give it a chance to captivate you and I am certain you won't be disappointed. I am very glad I gave it a chance.

Exquisite, entrancing

This is one of the best-written books in fantasy. Not a word is out of place or strikes a sour note. The pacing, the plot, the characterization are all spot-on. Ms. Berg paints her characters in clear, vivid colors, and they live and breathe, from the major characters down to the occasional housekeeper or servant. Ilario recalls Leslie Howard's depiction of the Scarlet Pimpernel; Portier is, as Dante describes him, an honest man, yet with courage and passion that are slowly revealed as he unwinds the tangled plot against the king. Dante is harder to grasp, his power, violence and deep silences hiding something that you can only get glimpses of.

The conflicts here are between magic, science and faith as much as they are between men and women. The lines where they blend, merge or clash are explored and woven into the characters' motivations and into the plot itself. There are secrets everywhere, and wonderful, beautiful passages like this, in which a woman speaks of her missing husband: "I have walked this land, touched its living bones, felt the sunlight that clothes it, listened to the music of wind, star, and beast song. But the universe no longer speaks love's name to me." Delicious. But this is only the first book of three. While the major events in this book are satisfyingly concluded, enough of the mystery is left for the second and third.

Like Portier when experiencing magic that he has not created, I "bleed envy."

This is a wonderful book. A fantasy detective novel with complicated and interesting characters who behave like real people. The background is dark and sinister - some of the images are really nightmare-inducingly grim. No one is only good or bad - people do things that are stupid and ill-advised, even when they're trying to do the right thing. It's not a cheery feel-good book (although it's not unremittingly depressing either), and it isn't simple, but it is intelligent and makes you think. I've loved all of Carol Berg's books and this is one of the best.

Philippe beauftragt seinen entfernten Cousin Portier de Duplais mit den streng vertraulichen Ermittlungen. Dieser studiert seit seiner Jugend die Magie, verfügt aber trotz seiner adligen Blutlinie über keinerlei magische Fähigkeiten. Ihm zur Seite als weitere "Agentes Confide" sollen deshalb der geckenhafte Schönling, Lord Chevalier Ilario de Sylvae, und der undurchschaubare Magier "Exsanguin" Dante stehen. Portier hat allerdings nicht den Eindruck, daß dies die Aufgabe irgendwie leichter macht...

THE SPIRIT LENS stellt den Auftakt von Bergs neuer "Collegica Magica"-Serie dar. Bereits im Vorwort wird der Grundkonflikt umrissen, danach werden eine Vielzahl von Charakteren, Vorgeschichte des Königreichs und umfassende Details zum Magiekonzept eingeführt, die manchmal mehr verwirren als erhellen und das Tempo der Handlung nach dem Spannung erzeugenden Auftakt wieder drosseln.
Anstatt des klassischen Mittelalter-Settings spielt die Handlung in einer Renaissance-Kulisse, die stark an Frankreich im 15./16. Jahrhundert erinnert, ohne daß dabei eine Alternate-History-Atmosphäre aufkommt. Interessant dargestellt ist der Konflikt zwischen Magie und Wissenschaft, wobei die Magie durch ein Übermaß an Regeln, illegale Praktiken, und ein erdrückendes Ausbildungssystem immer mehr zu Illusionisten-Tricks verkommt.

Die Handlung wird aus der Ich-Perspektive von Portier dargestellt, der zwar im Mittelpunkt der Handlung steht, sich die Aufmerksamkeit des Lesers aber mit seinen zwei Mitstreitern teilen muß, die gegensätzlicher nicht sein könnten: der Chevalier Ilario wirkt wie ein hirnloser Geck, der nur um den nächsten gelungenen Auftritt bei Hofe besorgt ist und an den jede geheime Mission verschwendet scheint; der Magier Dante verfügt über beeindruckende Kräfte, hält aber mit seiner Verachtung über Höflinge und die Hofmagier nicht hinter dem Berg und ist damit für die Aufgabe ebenfalls wenig geeignet.
Wie die drei Hauptfiguren trotz ihrer Vorbehalte und Unterschiede lernen müssen, zusammenzuarbeiten und aufeinander zuzugehen, während immer neue Erkenntnisse zutage kommen und sie in immer neuem Licht erscheinen lassen, gehört genauso zu den Stärken des Plots wie die unerwarteten Wendungen an Intrigen, Verschwörungen, falschen Spuren und Verdächtigungen, die den Leser bis zum Finale in Atem halten und ihn immer wieder rätseln lassen, wer die Guten und die Bösen, die Schuldigen und Unschuldigen, Freund oder Feind, Verbündeter oder Gegenspieler sind. Dies ist äußerst gekonnt in Szene gesetzt und läßt das anfangs schleppende Tempo des Plots schnell vergessen.
Romantische Elemente bleiben eher im Hintergrund; auch die manchmal fast quälende Selbstergründung, die manche andere Charaktere der Autorin durchlaufen, kommt diesmal kaum zum Tragen. Die Hauptfigur Portier ringt zwar um sein eigenes Selbstverständnis angesichts seines als herabwürdigend empfundenen Mangels an magischen Fähigkeiten und der Konsequenzen in seiner wechselhaften Vergangenheit, ergeht sich aber nicht in Selbstzerfleischung.

Nach vielen falschen Spuren und neuen Erkenntnissen sowohl was seine Gefährten anbelangt als auch die Machtspiele und Intrigen bei Hofe, gelingt es Portier, die Drahtzieher hinter dem Attentat zu benennen. Dennoch bleiben einige Handlungsfäden offen und man brennt geradezu darauf zu erfahren, wie es mit den drei ungleichen Agentes weitergeht. Diese Fragen werden in der Fortsetzung THE SOUL MIRROR aufgegriffen, die diesen Monat erschienen ist.

Unter dem Strich lohnt sich die Geschichte trotz des nur langsam in Schwung kommenden Tempos zu lesen, insbesondere wegen des gut konstruierten Plots und der ungewöhnlichen Konstellation der drei Hauptcharaktere.

Portier de Savin-Duplais, gescheiterter Magier und vom Leben enttäuscht, fristet sein Dasein als Bibliothekar in Sabrias einziger Magierschule und trauert seinen zahlreichen verpassten Gelegenheiten hinterher. Als ihn sein entfernter Cousin König Philippe von Sabria unerwartet damit beauftragt, einen Mordanschlag auf ihn als "agente confide" zu untersuchen, bei dem verbotene, düstere Magie eine Rolle gespielt hat, scheint sich Portiers Schicksal endlich zum Besseren zu wenden. Zusammen mit dem schroffen, aber höchst begabten Magier Dante und dem höfischen Gecken Ilario de Sylvae macht er sich an seine Ermittlungen, die ihn direkt an den Königshof führen. Dort verstricken sich Portier, Dante und Ilario schnell in tödlichen Intrigen und unheimlicher Magie, die die Grenzen aller Naturgesetze zu sprengen scheint.

THE SPIRIT LENS ist mein erstes Buch von Carol Berg und wird mit Sicherheit nicht das letzte sein. Der Roman hat mir enorm gut gefallen und ich habe ihn förmlich verschlungen.
Die Handlung von THE SPIRIT LENS hat mich von der ersten Seite an gepackt und mir sehr gut gefallen. Portiers Ermittlungen sind spannend, stimmungsvoll und vor allem logisch. Der Kriminalfall ist wohl durchdacht und es gibt zahlreiche Wendungen und Enthüllungen, die die Spannung konstant hoch halten. Auch das Finale konnte bei mir punkten. Die Handlung hat mich rundum befriedigt, es ist allerdings zu beachten, dass sich Action, Kämpfe und Magieanwendung in Grenzen halten. Portier ist ein Intellektueller, kein Krieger oder Magier, und das macht sich eben auch in der Art seiner Ermittlungen bemerkbar. Die Magie im Reich Sabria hat stark an Prestige und Macht verloren und die Naturwissenschaften befinden sich im Aufschwung. Der Konflikt zwischen Magie und Wissenschaft spielt eine sehr große Rolle für die Handlung.
Die Figuren in THE SPIRIT LENS haben mich ebenfalls stark angesprochen. Portier ist ein sehr sympathischer Hauptcharakter, der mich sofort für ihn eingenommen hat. Er hat mit seinem Versagen als Magier zu kämpfen und er trägt ein dunkles Geheimnis aus seiner Vergangenheit mit sich herum. Das höfische Umfeld ist ihm zwar fremd, sein Gerechtigkeitssinn und seine Neugier treiben ihn jedoch an und er trotzt so allen Widerständen. Dante und Ilario sind auch sehr gut ausgearbeitete Figuren, die mir sehr gut gefallen haben. Besonders Ilario ist mir sehr sympathisch. Die Interaktionen zwischen den drei "agentes confides" sind glaubwürdig und überzeugend und auch die zahlreichen Nebenfiguren des Romans haben mir zugesagt.
Alles in allem hat mir THE SPIRIT LENS sehr, sehr gut gefallen. Freunde von detailreicher, charakterorientierter Fantasy, die sich auch für einen spannenden Kriminalfall begeistern können, werden bestimmt nicht enttäuscht werden. Ich werde mir auf jeden Fall die Fortsetzung THE SOUL MIRROR zulegen. Sehr empfehlenswert!
