Too expensive for what you get

I don't dispute that light can be effective therapy. But this is a very poor value. It consists of two 24-watt 3500 degree Kelvin compact fluorescent bulbs in a somewhat crude pop-riveted, albeit well-made, metal box. A translucent plastic cover is screwed on with nylon screws.

Want the same effect? Buy a clamp lamp ($9), a 3500K LED light with A19 socket (4 pack of Sylvania is $12), and stick them in a Neewer light box (40 cm is $15). You're $36 in and have three bulbs left over!

It is painful to see how little one gets for this much money. It feels to me like it is preying on those who sincerely believe in and could use light therapy for SAD.

Produces a nice bright light, but emits a lot of heat

I debated between getting this lamp or one with LEDs. I ultimately settled on this one for various reasons, and there definitely things I like about it. It is a nice bright light, and the plastic sheet in front of the of the light bulb does a nice job of diffusing the glow so it's easy to look at without squinting if you're using it as a light box and casts a nice glow over the area you're illuminating if you're using it as a lamp.

It has two downsides.

One is that it emits a lot of heat. If I'm in a room that's already comfortably warm, turning on the lamp makes it uncomfortable in short order. Since people may be more inclined to use their light box in cold weather months, that may be okay, but it's an important thing to be aware of.

The second is that the stand is terribly designed. I wound up giving up. I got rid of the stand attachment, and I just set it flat on its (hexagonal and flat) base. It's not super sturdy this way, but it is actually much more stable without the stand than with.

I decided that it was good enough that I wouldn't return it, but I think if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would have made a different choice.

I do have awful bouts of seasonal depression and the weeks in April and May of cloudy, wet, and cold days that we get here in PA do bring me to tears and I sought out medication this year finally. While the mertazapine works this really cheers me up. It has a very sturdy design and even some warmth. The brightness is even and fills a room while not blinding you.

Bottom line: If you feel mopey of even sad in the winter because of the weather please look in to getting this as it will irradiate you with some feel good beams.

Good bright light (like the sun) and arrived very timely. Has metal frame and nice size box light, the light does get a little warm. I think some of the others are made of plastic that can melt or discolor over time. I use it in the morning for about 20 minuets when I first wake up to combat depression or SAD. Glad I bought this one by Northern Light, it was recommended by my therapist. Has a metal stand and it can sit vertical or horizontal.

I purchased this light in part because it's factory tested to ensure it emits the amount of light claimed & the ability to use during travel. Although I'm careful with it, I didn't have any problems with it breaking during travel. It really helped with feelings of exhaustion over the winter.

The box came nicely packed, the product was intact and no pieces were broken or missing. It seems to be well made and the size is good for the top of a table. The light is not overly bright and is soothing. I have not used it as per the directions yet as I just received it (which is the reason for the 4 stars), but I am pleased thus far. I will update this review after using the lamp. 2/13/14, I used my lamp for 45 minutes this morning and it definitely has some effect. I feel more awake, alert and energetic. So I will continue to use the lamp over the next five continuous days (as I am home on a break) and will update my review again. If this works as I hope, it will be a blessing as I suffer from alternating bouts of depression and anxiety. I hope this will even out my moods and help me feel calm. 2/14/14 Unit does not get hot with use. Let it warm up for a minute before you use it so the lights can achieve their maximum brightness. I am feeling better from these two uses. 2/18 I am very happy I purchased this product. It is helping me get through this cold, dark, overly snowy northeastern winter. My moods seem to have evened out and I have had a few nights in which I have slept more soundly, with the alarm waking me. Hopefully, over time I will continue to see improvement or at least maintain the improvement I have seen. Definitely worth a try.

Given the incredible cost of this item I am amazed at the low quality. Piece of metal bent to hold 2 of bulbs, a plastic UV filter, a few screws, & with a cheap hard-wired electrical cord - sloppy.

This has definitely helped me so far this winter - Normally as soon as the sun goes away I have a lot of trouble waking up in the morning. Typically in the summer I wake up at 7-7:30 ish and in the winter at around 8-8:30 because it's so difficult to get up sooner with the darkness.

With this light, I have been able to consistently wake up at 6:45 (!!! that's early for me!), I get dressed etc. & sit in front of the lamp for 30 minutes before heading off to work. It's made a huge difference in my overall perkiness. Of course, winter has only just started, so we'll see how I feel in February... but so far, so good.
