Dark Shadows 26 Seasons 1967

40 complete, spine-tingling episodes on 4-discs Dark Shadows DVD Set 1 contains original series episodes 210 - 250. With its alluring tales of gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became the most popular daytime series of all time during its run on ABC from 1966-71. Much like the show's character Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden vampire released from his chained coffin after nearly 200 years, Dark Shadows retains an immortality that time steadfastly fails to erode

Episode 214 contains some of the best writing ever done for TV. I'm talking about where Barnabas talks about the Old House, how it was built, where the different parts came from: "The foundation was made from boulders left by glaciers in North America long ago."

That whole speech was good enough to be in any play. Really poetic and inspired. These early Barnabas episodes are what I think is great about the series, the mean, tormented, I'm-a-vampire Barnabas who had one rule (friendship) for members of his family and a very different one for those who weren't. He was scary! And if you watched the series up to now, the way he took the mean little jail house rapist willy who had been terrifying the women of Collinwood and turned him into his little punk jabbering with fear and hovering on the brink of a nervous breakdown. And the way they had him murder Jason, a major character! Awesome!

Classic Dark Shadows, once a national phenomenon, an oldie but a goody.

ABC's supernatural soap which ran from 1966-71 with over 1000 eps by Dan Curtis ... Intended to be a Wuthering Heights-like drama, for about 200 episodes before a supernatural character takes over ... Barnabus Collins the vampire. Right where Amazon picks up the Instant here...Then all bets are off, we get witches, werewolves, golems, phoenixes, ghosts galore & whatever the heck Quentin is. The concept is surprisingly timely now that the period supernaturals (Pride & Prejudice & Zombies) are so hip... Curtis' original Dark Shadows is Delightfully low budget... And on mostly live daytime tv time constraints there are lots of mistakes... And why it rocks. When compared to the mind-numbing mediocrity of most on screen scenes the descriptions of Barnabas' hinted off-screen exploits are amazingly dynamic... Like the ransacking of the doctor's office to get Maggie's blood sample. In typical soap fashion story-lines creep along taking appalling amounts of time to climax, constraints of the live-to-tape format lead to classic goofs too.

I Met Barnabas at a the Denvon Horse Show back in the 70's when I was 11 He turned around and had His fangs in and pretended to jump at me. I think i had my picture taken with him. Anyhoo It may have been a low budget Soap Opera, But it scared the carp out of me. I am thinking about buying the whole set so I can watch it again. Loved this series and the Dark Shadows movies.

I loved the TV show Dark Shadows and even was able to sit through the Johnny Depp movie. And so, I went back to my Kindle and bought one episode of Dark Shadows to see if I still loved it. Well, it is still fun, camp and just the way I remembered it. Sadly it is priced more horrifically than Barnabus on a bad day. The season is over %60 and an "episode" like the one I chose was 12 minutes running time...the rest had been commercials that were cut away. Amazon tells me that they did not set this price. I'm sad for everyone all the way around...this old gem will have to remain in the coffin.

I remember Dark Shadows was all the rage when it first appeared on TV. Watching it again for a nostalgic look back makes me wonder what was so initially engaging about it. My reaction now is "yawn".

As a teenager I rushed home from school each day so that my mother and I could watch Dark Shadows. What a delight to be able to watch it again as a Sr. Citizen now!

I love this series. It was a gift to me, I was slightly taken aback by the price when I found out. At a lower price it would be a brilliant value.

The first episode is actually good viewing. It shows Barnabus coming to the US Family home and sets the mood and tone for the series.
