Product Description
Directed by Lexy Lovell and Michael Uys (Directors Guild of America, LA Film Critics, and Peabody Award winners for "Riding the Rails.") "The Good Soldier" follows the journeys of five combat veterans from different generations of American wars as they sign up, go into battle, and eventually change their minds about what it means to be a good soldier. "An astounding film 'The Good Soldier' should be mandatory viewing for every President and member of Congress who is willing to make the decision to send men and women into war. In a culture where many veterans do not speak back home of what they witnessed and participated in battle, this film portrays five combat veterans from different wars ranging from WWII to Vietnam to the Gulf War to Iraq who emotionally lay it on the line. The sheer humanity of such inhumane situations is astounding and riveting and heartbreaking. The courage it takes for these soldiers to speak of their darkest moments and moral dilemmas with such brutal honesty is to be commended and brings up questions of our government supporting those they would send to die who did not die, but came home." -Heather Buchanan, HipHamptons.com "A wonderful film...with great emotional power. It was a brilliant idea to hear veterans of the various wars because the net effect is to deal, not just with one odious war, but with the phenomenon of war as a universal evil. It is especially important, if we are to ditch forever the idea of 'good' wars, to tackle head on the war which is generally considered morally unassailable – World War II." -Howard Zinn, A People's History of the United States "It’s hard to imagine watching a more affecting movie than "The Good Soldier"…it may be as affecting a movie as I've ever seen. I found it both hard to watch and hard to turn away from. Really powerful stuff." -Jason Albert, theOnion.com (AV Club) Music: JJ Grey & Mofro, CSNY, Nine Inch Nails Big Bill Broonzy Edwin Starr Carly Comando.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2010The Good Soldier is honest reporting of the experience five US military veterans from World War II to Iraq. these testamonies are seldom heard in our corporate media world. Long after citizens have moved on, war veterans continue to suffer the effects of war. The uniforms, the education benefits, the high tech weapons are well publicized in military ads. The life long impact of being trained to kill other people and witness and be part of that killing very seldom sees the light of day. The Good Soldier is a very important contribution to a young person desiring to make an honest, reflective career choice. there are plenty of slick productions that promote participation in the military without being honest about the personal consequences of being part of killing that comes with war. This production is well produced and tells the real stories that need to be considered when choosing a military career. Find a way to contribute this to a school, library, church or Boy or Girl Scout troop in your community. You can be a good citizen and join the Good Soldier.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2012Someone has to go out and carry out the duties of our country, that is the bottom line. If the military wasn't your cup of tea or you don't want to do it then please do not crush the people that make the decision to serve. This film is extremely offensive to people that serve/have served. Maybe there are some who are not proud of things they have done, but there are people that have had to kill to save theirs or their buddies lives. Going to war is not about killing innocent people, it is about serving your country and carrying out whatever it is they ask of you so that a mass draft does not have to be reinstated. This film is propoganda, hippie, and straight unamerican trash. Today's military is filled with affluent, intelligent individuals who have made a conscious decision to go do whatever their county asks of them. You don't have to agree with it, but please support the troops, because they are volunteering so that others aren't forced to.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020yeah, this film is one sided but let's not 4get that all branches of the military r pretty one sided themselves, along with HUGE budgets 4 slick advertising, enticing young Americans 2 join up "and see the world." I quite understand why one would join up n order 2 help pay 4 college as there r so many kids out there whose family can't afford 2 foot the bill and even make military service a career. God bless them all, each and every one of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019After 40 minutes I started noticing that it was a documentary done on several veterans and what they got out of combat. Yes, combat sucks. War is more ruthless than most people want to think about. The military trains people to become killers. That isn't a new concept and as long as there are wars and Armies, it will remain to be the same. For all those who came away with the experience with a horrible memory and want to blame the military, there are millions that realize they were trained to do a horrible job and once the job is over, they have to figure out how to function the rest of their lives. Since the US military has removed the draft, those thinking of voluntary enlistment have to consider how they will deal with the possible reality of being in combat and killing another human being. It isn't something any rational person would want to do in normal life, but combat isn't normal life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2012THE GOOD SOLDIER is a film that deals with five U.S. Veterans from WWII, Vietnam, The Gulf War & Iraq. The time lines of enlisting, going to war, the phases of being a good soldier and the resulting aftermath. This film is both a historical record and a personal record. The soldiers talk about their mind set going into war and what happened in the heat of battle and their emotions and troubles dealing with their actions afterwards. I've never seen a more honest account of war before. Personally, I am not an anti-war person but this film did explore areas I had not truly and honestly wanted to think about. I highly recommend it.
