Sunny is married to the butcher Ernie; their marriage is about to end as both of them have affairs. Thus Sunny hires Lester Atlas as private investigator in order to collect proofs for the divorce. One evening drunken Ernie and his partner Dave have a fight in the butchery with the result of Ernie getting knocked out in the fridge where he dies during the night. Strangely panned by many critics yet this is actually a funny, black comedy about small-time accidents, coincidences, misunderstandings, failed scheming and murder amongst friends and spouses that has a lot more wit than the overrated Blood Simple. The plot is tight, the humor is delightfully droll and the next-door type characters are well-drawn and fun to watch despite their nastiness, simply because of the blackly amusing circumstances they find themselves in.
This did not deserve to become so obscure. Re-issue it on DVD please.

This film is a real sleeper! I doubt that it received much publicity at the time it came out, but it is a great story with John Lithgow and Teri Garr. It has been described as a black comedy with some romance that is very underplayed by the various characters. It was filmed in San Pedro, CA, and it is a pleasure to recognize some of the locations. Bruce McGill and Randy Quaid contribute to the small cast. The story moves along quite nicely and holds your attention throughout.

This little known film, directed in 1989 by Malcolm Mowbray, fell through the cracks and that's a shame. It's a great black comedy noir about sleazy husband Ernie (Bruce McGill) married to femme fatale wife Sunny (Teri Garr)--both of whom are cheating on each other. Ernie is a butcher, in partnership with his pal Dave (John Lithgow). Their butcher shop caters to some of the more upscale residents of the neighborhood; among other things, they sell venison (which ain't cheap).
Many of their customers are attractive women Ernie flirts with and wants to deeply enjoy, if you catch my drift (some of them he actually does deeply enjoy). When Ernie seemingly disappears, Sunny hires a detective (Randy Quaid) to locate him. Things escalate noir-wise but the ensuing comedy is right on the money. Raise the stakes, and you bring out the comic potential. That's exactly what happens here.
The plot of this well done film is excellent, as is the acting. More people should watch this; it's an 80s film but not at all dated.
Highly recommended.

This is an enjoyable farce to watch especially if you have some time to kill. The interaction between the characters is nice.
