Bamboo Blade is one of those shows that American animation can only aspire to. Well-written, good voice acting, clean animation - American producers can do this. What American animation so often misses is actual engagement of the viewer with the story. This anime does very nicely engage the viewer.

Basically, the story is a Japanese slice-of-life (pun intended, as the subject is kendo) of high school club activity. Very little in the way of fan service and even that little is really unobtrusive, no harem scenes or subtext and also not too much in the way of one-dimensional characters; all of the principals experience growth, which is very heartwarming and entertaining. No super powers, just high levels of skill wrought by hard work. No magic, save the magic of friendship and personal growth. No mechas.

Not to give too much away in terms of plot, this anime does what American anime rarely does - and Japanese anime often does - is it allows the characters to grow through loss. The losses that are there are with the silver lining of character growth. Check your expectations at the door - they won't be met completely as would be, well, expected. What you get instead is a more realistic record of what our protagonists go through.

Yah. Highly recommended. One of my favorites.

A sports show with anime humor and action. Very light on fan service and with some good moral lessons. Dubbed by some of my favorite voice actors. I loved all the characters. The girls and the coach -- really identified with the coach. Unlike a lot of anime, this one has a proper ending.
