Product Description

Following the mysterious death of an acclaimed ghost writer, a replacement writer is sent to an isolated compound to pen the memoirs of a former prime minister, and unknowingly becomes embroiled in a high stakes, international conspiracy that has deadly consequences.

Amazon.com

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanksi (The Pianist) teams up with author-screenwriter Robert Harris (Enigma) for this twisty political thriller. Ewan McGregor plays an unnamed ghostwriter who signs on to pen the memoirs of former British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). The money is good, but there's a catch: the ghost's predecessor perished under mysterious circumstances (his body washed up on the shore in an apparent suicide). Being the adventurous sort, the ghost puts that information aside and travels to Lang's austere compound on Martha's Vineyard, where he meets Lang's efficient personal secretary, Amelia (Kim Cattrall, good but for an inconsistent accent), and acerbic wife, Ruth (An Education's Olivia Williams). Just as he's wading through Lang's dull text, the PM's ex-cabinet minister accuses him of handing over suspected terrorists to the CIA, fully aware that torture would be on the agenda. The next thing the ghost knows, he's working for a possible war criminal, and the deeper he digs, the more convinced he becomes that Lang is lying about his past. After exchanging a few words with a sharp-eyed old man (Eli Wallach) and a tight-lipped professor (Tom Wilkinson), he realizes his life may also be at risk. Then, while Lang hits the road to proclaim his innocence, the ghost gets to know Ruth better--much better. If the conclusion feels a little glib, Polanksi tightens the screws with skill, McGregor enjoys his best role in years, and Williams proves she's fully prepared to carry a movie of her own. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Polanski Combines Politics, Paranoia and Hitchcockian Touches for an Intriguing Thriller
4 out of 5 stars
Polanski Combines Politics, Paranoia and Hitchcockian Touches for an Intriguing Thriller
The mounting suspense and twisty plot turns may recall Hitchcock, but the richly paranoid mood, the ambiguous moral compass and especially the climax of this politically driven 2010 thriller are pure Polanski. The 76-year filmmaker has made a polished yarn that brings to mind his career pinnacle, Chinatown, but the pulpish nature of the material here never allows this film to come near the classic level set by Roman Polanski's 1974 masterwork. Still, it remains crackling good entertainment on its own terms. Based on Robert Harris' 2007 novel, The Ghost, the story (adapted by Harris and Polanski) wraps around Adam Lang, a renowned world leader who is fighting extradition for past war crimes. Similarities to former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair are purely intentional since Pierce Brosnan's sharply rendered portrayal evokes such comparisons. The handsome, charismatic Lang was forced to resign when he supported a war as a favor to the U.S. President even if it irreparably damaged his reputation at home. Along with his tightly wound wife Ruth and suspiciously efficient assistant Amelia Bly, Lang is staying in a private compound on Martha's Vineyard in order to finish his memoirs.Enter a professional ghostwriter hired to finish Lang's memoirs, an assignment nearly completed when the first ghostwriter is suddenly found washed ashore on the island. The circumstances for his death are unclear, and the new writer is given just one month to spruce up what his predecessor had written. Just as the writer settles into his new role, Lang is ordered by the International Criminal Court to stand trial for handing over four suspected terrorists to the CIA for torture such as water-boarding. The gears are set in motion with the book's deadline pushed up due to the breaking news and the writer discovering information secretly left behind by his dead predecessor. The plot thickens considerably with Ruth playing a pivotal role as she unravels from the crisis and the surprise appearance of a Harvard professor named Paul Emmet whose past association with Lang may implicate the political leader in a burgeoning conspiracy that proves life-threatening to the writer. By the time the puzzle pieces come together, Polanski provides a crescendo that melds the brooding intensity of a mystery with a canny sense of political intrigue. In the title role, Ewan McGregor brings fervent energy to a nameless everyman character whose entire existence appears to rest on the secrets within the manuscript. With subtle force, Brosnan exposes the vainglorious underbelly of the Blair doppelganger, while Olivia Williams sears the screen with fierce intensity as Ruth, a cross between Hillary Clinton, Lady MacBeth and Mrs. Robinson of The Graduate. Polanski is not afraid to cast familiar faces in key roles like Kim Cattrall as Amelia. Initially, it's hard to shake the image of Samantha (Sex and the City: The Movie) when she strides onscreen, but the actress sharpens the buttoned-up Amelia with a real edge. Showing up in effective cameos are Tom Wilkinson as Emmet, Timothy Hutton as Lang's attorney, a nearly unrecognizable Jim Belushi as the publishing magnate who hires the ghostwriter, and 94-year-old Eli Wallach as a beachcomber. Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) delivers an appropriately sweeping score, while Pawel Edelman's (The Pianist) cinematography produces the right foreboding atmosphere necessary to maintain a tight vise around the mystery.

It is a great movie. One of the better movies that I have seen

My review is more of a 4.5 than it is a 5

The Ghost Writer (released as The Ghost in the United Kingdom and Ireland) is a 2010 Franco-German-British political thriller film directed by Roman Polanski. The film is an adaptation of a 2007 Robert Harris novel, The Ghost, with the screenplay written by Polanski and Harris. It stars Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, and Olivia Williams.

For those of you wondering how close this book film is to the novel it is based off of - I have great news! In regards to the plot and specific details that move this story a long,'The Ghost Writer' matches almost toe to toe when compared to Harris' work. There are complaints online regarding the characters in the movie have different accents from those described in the novel (seriously? This is what people are nit-picking about?) but this really doesn't affect the actual quality of this film; McGregor's performance as an author that finds himself "too far in" is spectacular, and his relationship with the other characters captures the true nature of a political thriller.

The experience of watching this film feels like metaphorically peeling an onion with your eyes; as such is politics, the prediction is that the setting will be inevitably tumultuous, and 'The Ghost Writer' doesn't fail to serve exactly what it's target audience is expectating. On one hand, a powerful leader is being investigated after an accusation involving war crimes befalls him. On another, the possibility of three being an affair (gasp) is simultaneously alluded to. Hands down: if you are looking for drama and suspense that nevers seems to take a break - you've come to the right place!

I find with political thrillers it can be really hard to stay engaged and 'keep up' with the story at hand; convolution can be hard to avoid in between jargon and presumptions made about the audience and their knowledge about political affairs. 'The Ghost Writer' does a good job of 1) keeping a distinct focus on details important to the main storyline and 2) Integrates interactions that provide clarity when needed. There are plenty of scenes that are 'head scratchers' in that they don't make sense at first, but there is a sufficient amount of follow-through to guide viewers to the answers and conclusions that 'the ghost' comes to at the same time. There are moments that feel vapidly predictable, but I have no complaints when comparing these to the vast sea of ingenuity the rest of this film emcompasses.

I, personally, would have liked a little more insight regarding the motivation behind (Mr. Lang's) memoirs being written; without any spoilers, it's just hard to accept this journey as simply about capturing an autobiographical account when you consider the seemingly inescapable and dead-end conclusions.

Brilliant, thought provoking, and worth your time:
    I would recommend!

You know, I'd like it. REally. Good movie. Some good suspense and mystery. But the ending, was a disappointment.

"The Ghost Writer" (starring Ewan McGregor, not to be confused with "Ghost Writer" starring David Boreanaz) is one of those films that as soon as you reach the end of it, you immediately want to go back and watch it again, knowing what you know now. And if you do, you'll find that this film contains some incredibly powerful and extremely subtle acting, especially from Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, and Tom Wilkinson.

I don't want to spoil anything, but suffice it to say that the film seems completely credible when you view it the first time, and then becomes even more powerful upon viewing it a second time - all thanks to the phenomenal acting. Think of how challenging it is to an actor to know that the first time around the audience will view you one way, but the next time around they will view you another way, and both ways have to seem credible each time, but was only filmed once. The only weak acting is Kim Cattrall's scene where she has to cry, which comes across as forced; you watch the scene and know that the only reason she's "crying" is because the script told her to at that point. But the rest of the cast is awesome.

There are some deficiencies in the directing and the writing: scenes shot from angles that don't make clear sense, things that could have been made clearer in dialogue, plot points that should have been elaborated on but which feel missing. And there is some unnecessary confusion regarding "Rhinehart" (the publisher) and "Richard Rycart" (the Foreign Secretary) and even the ghost writer's agent, "Rick Ricardelli" (Jon Bernthal). With 26 letters in the English alphabet you'd think less similar names could have been chosen. Even if these were the names in the original book ("The Ghost" by Robert Harris) that doesn't mean they couldn't have been changed for a film audience's ears.

Last but not least, a shout-out for Alexandre Desplat ("Harry Potter," "Argo") whose score for this film sets the mood brilliantly and hauntingly.

In short, this is an underrated film that deserves more attention than it received. After you watch it, be sure to check out the making-of extras. You're going to be amazed that what you thought you were seeing wasn't what you really saw!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Solid Mystery Thriller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 2021
I had seen the film before on tv and at the time wasn't particularly impressed. I didn't think I'd revisit it, but with new releases few and far between these days I decided to give it another go. And I'm glad I did. This time around I watched with close attention to detail and surprised myself by liking it very much. It's a very solid mystery thriller with an intelligent plot, an exciting cast and beautiful cinematography, masterfully brought together by Polanski's direction. Mind you, you really need to pay attention to fully appreciate all that's going on. This is mostly slow drama with only a few moments of fast paced action. However, the build up of tension is expertly done and whenever a short burst of action occurs it does make a real impact.

The story of the ghost writer for a former British PM gives an interesting insight in the life of the high and mighty and the political spin that goes on behind the facade. A short scene where the newly arrived "ghost" is matter-of-factly tasked with formulating a momentous statement for immediate public release is very telling. In a time when we all love to hate high profile politicians and are quite aware of the lies their lives are, this story works a treat.

The casting is inspired. Pierce Brosnan has the just the right kind of good looks and slightly smarmy charisma to make us both fall under the spell of the slippery politician he portrays and despise him, at the same time and to the same extent. Also, it's always a joy to see him, even he doesn't actually have an awful lot of screen time here. Ewan McGregor is the real lead, and he is absolutely perfect for the inconspicuous ghost writer, totally unimpressed with the trapppings of power, for whom the memoir of this particular politician is just another job. He is very good playing characters like this and he is both likable and relatable as the hapless ghost who becomes far more involved in this dark tale of corruption than he bargained for. Of the ladies, I absolutely loved Olivia Williams as the Ex-PM's acerbic wife. Kim Cattrall is as the PA cum mistress is fine but not particularly memorable. Also fun to see the late and great Eli Wallach in a small cameo, one of his last appearances on the silver screen.

Good film and definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it. Also if you are a fan of any of the leading actors.

The DVD I purchased ("The Ghost", Optimum Home Entertainment UK/Ireland release with white background on cover) is very nice. Picture and sound are good. It has English subtitles for those who may want or need them. Also included are the following extra features:
