I will get down to the meat of my review in just a few sentences, I only paid $126.89 for my system, and I got my moneys worth. No problems with the fan at all as was reported by other people.

The place were this unit shines for me is DIVX/XVID playback. This unit plays old DIVX files that a COBY DVD-298 could not. No firmware crashes.

Another issue is lack of inputs, you can fix that with a switchbox for audio.
I am not too happy with the flimsy wires and the plugs provided for the speakers. They could have done better for a claimed 1000 Watt RMS Amplifier.

Bass output isn't too great for music, I use an old Kenwood Powered Sub for that. Bass output through the system's speakers is fine for movie playback however.

If you are paying $300.00 for this unit I personally would spend a little more and buy something a bit better, like a Denon surround system with speakers which currently is running around $300.00. http://www.amazon.com/Denon-DHT-391XP-Channel-Theater-System/dp/B003QP3M92/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1326040220&sr=8-10

If you just need a surround system with a DVD player with a usb port for MP3's, this little Samsung does work very well for the money, add DIVX, 1080p upconversion and Digital surround, and still for $300.00 it is not a bad price.

Update: 1/31/2012: The only problem I have had with this unit is it switches the resolution back to 720p from 1080p when I turn the unit off, and back on for some reason. It isn't a huge problem to switch the resolution, just a small annoyance.

I purchased this just after Christmas, replaced my Best Buy Insignia system which was 5 years old and died. Setup was relatively easy. All these systems have lots of wires but Samsung is color coded to make it somewhat easier versus others.
I did have problems with the 5.1 surround sound. I still can not figure out how to change it when it is receiving the signal from the cable box/TV. The instruction booklet could be enhanced. The same with the Samsung website. Support is really non existent.

Overall a good value for the $price. If you own an iPod, this has a cradle. Too bad my Sansa MP3 player does not work with that.

Bass Unit Not So Great ...

I got a great price on this Samsung surround sound. It was delivered on time as promised and I was very excited to receive it after reading all the positive reviews on the system. I am terribly disappointed in the delivery of bass. It cracks and is quite distorted. I will need to replace the bass unit with another one eventually. I am impressed however with the features of the system, considering the price.

Not very loud, bass is lacking badly! I ended up buying a powered sub and hooked it up and now the bass is perfect. I was a little shocked that a 1000w system had such limited volume. But on the other hand the smaller speakers are great and the sound is very precise and crisp. So all in all not a bad system.

Bought this as a gift for my parents and I think it will be fine for them seeing how they're not the most technilogically adept. Got it all set up and the unit definetly lacks in overall volume (about as loud as their tv speakers, just a little clearer) and low-end bass is pretty much non-existent. The remote has an EQ button and a surround sound button that do absolutley nothing (maybe not a feature offered on this model?) but it would have been nice if it did and you could toggle with the settings. I have a unit that is probably about 10 years older than this and cost about the same which you can do this with and it sounds better. Wireless interent stuff you are supposedly able to utilize on this piece apparently require additional parts. It does look nice however, and doesn't take up much space. I guess if you're just looking for an all-in-one unit that gets the job done for as little money as possible, this is it...but if you want to actually be blown away by your movies and music, keep shopping.

I purchased this item to go along with a Samsung LN40C630 40" LCD TV. Set up was fairly easy ,sound from the unit is surprisingly pretty nice, considering the price that I paid for it.
Even though it has a DVD player built in, I have it hooked up to a Samsung Blu-ray player.

I needed to purchase a HMDI cable and you might need an optical- dvi cable also to hook it up.
