Style: Dual TunerVerified Purchase

Lots of good, accurate information in other's reviews that are posted. From my standpoint, I believe it is a good piece of equipment but required a great deal of patience in getting it setup. Even following the instructions that are found at the SiliconDust website and reading other posts of people's questions and problems, I feel that it took way too long to discover all of the little nuances that it took to get the product to work properly. One big thing for me, that took a long time to realize, was to enhance the cable signal to the level the tuner could recognize. At first I found that everytime I tried searching for channels, I was getting different results. Finally I decided to try connecting a several year old Radio Shack Cable TV High Gain Amplified Splitter and, lo and behold, it boosted the signal to a level that the HDHomeRun liked. The other issue I have not quite figured out from the instructions I've found, is getting Windows Media Center to show program information on the digital channels so I can easily set up DVR recordings. I don't think I have this installation really fine tuned yet.

I think, in the end, I'm going to be happy with this product, but it has become more of a project than I would like. I wonder if alternative products are this hard to get up and running?

I chose this product because my cable company is discontinuing analog service and my current tuner does not have Clear QAM capabilities.

Performs as advertised

The HDHomerun performed well on my network, delivering unencrypted cable QAM signal which was streamed over my network to all my wireless laptops and desktops. Using a free download (InstaTV Lite), I was also able to stream video to my iphone, although you’ll only be able to view a postage size image. Using the iphone’s accessibility feature, you can increase the size somewhat, but it will still be small rendering an image of about 52mm x 30mm. Still, this may be good enough if all you want to do is watch a quick late night movie while in bed without disturbing your partner. To reduce the deterioration of the signal when splitting the signal, I used a powered splitter which appeared to enhance the signal (less pixilation and drops).

Another thing to note is that other devices/software that is streaming video over the same network will cause the overall signal to deteriorate, hence your HDHomerun streamed image will likewise suffer. This will occur when I have my wireless home surveillance cameras fully operating and try to view HDHomerun streamed video. I use only a g network over a 2.4gh band, so this issue may be somewhat muted with a better/upgraded system.

The HDHomerun system was fairly simple to operate using the included software. Once you have eliminated all the “dead” channels in the setup, your lineup of channels will appear on the right hand of the screen when you hover your mouse pointer to that side. You can then easily select your channel by simply clicking on it. I tried using Windows Media Center on my Vista system, but found that the lack of full channel display (like the HDHomerun) was a big negative. My only complaint is that there is a lack of a channel guide that would list the days viewing options…so if I am planning to view any programming for the day over the network, I would have to consult my regular cable guide for the info.

Overall, the system operates as advertised. I did not test the unit with OTA reception as I reside in a valley where reception is almost non-existent. Those with network issues should address them before trashing the unit. Lack for provisioning a reliable channel lineup led to my downgrading it by a star, although you may wish to visit their website for a possible paid channel subscription guide (not entirely sure if they provide this service).

Stream HDTV to your Macs and PCs with Ease

This is one of those solutions that is beautiful in its simplicity. I added HDTV to all my PCs and Macs without installing any cards; every system on my wireless network can receive the HDHomeRun stream (though be aware that only one tuner can be engaged by a PC or Mac at a time). I even surf HDTV on my 42" Panasonic via HDHomeRun... which I can do because I use the Panasonic as a PC monitor. I can't tell the difference in quality between broadcast HDTV/VGA connection to the antenna directly connected to the TV.

By connecting my PC to my Panasonic I can surf HDTV with Windows Media Center (using a wireless mouse), which is faster and more efficient than any TV remote. In WMC's channel guide I can see the channel names, current program, and episode details immediately. I can right click on a channel/episode time slot in the guide and schedule a recording. Windows Media Center also has full DVR functionality. Some tech reviewers think WMC is a better DVR than Tivo. The combination of HDHomeRun and Windows Media Center is cost-effective, user friendly, and meets all my HDTV programming needs. I received WMC with Windows 7.

Software installation: The installation was fast and simple: After a quick and painless installation of the SiliconDust software on each Windows system, Windows Media Center tben located the HDHomeRun tuner on my network on its own. After a channel scan it found 26 digital channels over the air. The whole software install and setup took maybe 2 or 3 minutes.

Hardware Installation: HDHomeRun just needs to be plugged into your home wired or wireless network, a power source, and have an antenna connected to it. That's it. I connect the HDHomeRun to the LAN port on my Airport access point. It sits in a room with the antenna and AP; my 42" Panasonic and Macs and PCs are all in other rooms in the house. For $49 on Amazon my HDHomeRun has given me multiple ways to watch HDTV and opened up the power of Windows Media Center. The only reason I haven't dropped my cable service is because it provides my Internet connection and my cable provider charges more for just Internet than for an Internet/TV package (I don't understand this... but it's the truth).
