Let me say that the first tool I purchased and used did do the job, but badly. When using this to compress the door spring for installation the unit BENT.
For someone new to this tool let me explain it first. You place the spring at the split wedged end. Then tighten the bolt in the middle, compressing the spring enough to get it into the space between the door and the door frame. When I tightened it the spring did compress a little, but just as I started to tighten the bolt it started to bend between the spring and the bolt. Now, after bending it back with a hammer and some heavy pliers I did ultimately get it to work for me. But again, it bent.
I've used another version of this same product from different manufactures, and never had this problem. My recommendation is to spend a little more for a better product.
(DON'T USE A PRYBAR AND A SCREW DRIVER. its how you end up with a black eye when the spring pop out and hits you in the face. Get one of these... Just not this one.)
