One of the chief reasons I purchased a 27" iMac was the hope of using it as a monitor for several other PCs. Like many people, I regularly use several different computers, but I don't have the desktop space to fit monitors for each of them. The beautiful display on the iMac and the promise of an external video input seemed to be just what I needed.

Well, as most people figured out, the fly in the ointment is that Apple only includes their Mini DisplayPort (MDP) input on the iMac, and few computers can output this type of video. Even more disappointing, converting from things like VGA, DVI or HDMI isn't straightforward - it's not just a fancy cable...you need more serious conversion. Enter the Kanex XD, one of the first affordable ways to convert HDMI into the MDP input needed by the iMac.

My intent was to put the Kanex behind a simple HDMI video switch, and for my older systems that lack HDMI (or DVI), add a VGA to HDMI converter. The switch lets me select among as many feeds as I want, and now I have a way to connect just about any video source to my iMac. HDMI comes through natively, DVI can be converted to HDMI with a simple cable, and VGA goes through my converter (I use the excellent Atlona VGA to HDMI scaler). Yes, there are issues with sharing the keyboard and mouse, but that's for another review.

The Kanex XD basically does what it says it will. You plug it into the back of your 27" iMac, attach an HDMI video source, press Command + F2 on your iMac keyboard - and viola, you've got external video on your iMac. Still, while I'm thankful to have achieved this much, I have three complaints about the unit:

1. The included documentation is rather sparse. There's more information on the Kanex web site, but it's not particularly clear either.

2.

So the Kanex XD is pretty awesome, it's exactly what I was looking for. I can now connect my PS3 into my iMac and watch movies and play games effortlessly. There are a couple reasons why I chose this product over the leading competitor the Belkin AV360. First off, price. I was able to snag this off Amazon for much less then the AV360. Also, in terms of design, I love the way this device looks and the lights on the sides much more then the Belkin. I also chose the Kanex because it came with a gold plated HDMI cable. Unfortunately, it's a bit short for me, but I do appreciate the HDMI cable included. Other than that, the two products serve the exact same purpose, connecting an HDMI device into your iMac 27". I've had no problems setting it up, as well as no lag. Picture quality is good. And this has been bothering me so much, no matter what HDMI adapter you get, THE IMAC WILL ONLY SUPPORT 720P. This isn't because of the Kanex XD or the Belkin AV360, it is because the iMac can only accept 720p signals through the mini display port. Until Apple updates their software, users are stuck with 720p. Once they do make the switch, this device would be able to support the 1080p signals giving you the FULL HD experience. So, while others are complaining that this device only transmits 720p signals they are completely wrong. It's Apples fault, not Kanexs. I also tried connecting the Kanex to my friends 21.5" iMac,and unfortunately it did not work. Just in case anyone was wondering. Hope this helps anyone's decision! I definitely recommend this product to any iMac 27" user. Thanks!

READ. THE. DESCRIPTION.

This will NOT work with Thunderbolt displays. Plain and Simple.
But if you have an older 27" Cinema Display or iMac, it works great!

My xbox 360 hooked up looks great! and 720p isn't a limitation on a smaller screen like this. Its still hi-def after all.

Works as advertised and I'm really happy with the results. There are a few important things everyone should know that is documented by the manufacturer but easily overlooked.

* The unit requires external power to work. This is supplied by a power brick adapter included with the product
* It only handles a max 720p resolution. It can not do 1080p and will simply give you a blank screen if you try to run this resolution.

As some others have noted the unit does get fairly hot, but if you are connecting this to an aluminum body imac you should be used to hot aluminum computing products on your desktop. It's no where near as hot as my imac will get after heavy gaming or video editing.

I'm using it on a late 2009 27" imac. This generation of imac has a displayport input vs the newer models which I believe only have lightning. I'm not sure if this will work with those models since it's specifically outputting displayport.

I puchased this product to convert my hdmi signal from my home theatre receiver to my 27" Cinema display. Yes it works but gets very hot. If mounting in a cool place with ventilation I would say your okay but if you dont have it ventilated it nots good. My unit shut down in just 30 minutes of installing it. once it cooled down it was fine. I installed a sall cooling fan and it has seem to be okay so far...

be careful as this item does not work for every kind of iMac you need a regular MiniDisplayport not a Thunderbolt which is on most models after late 2011.

Check the back you want one with a square with lines on the left and right of it not one with a lightning bolt shaped arrow.
