As you read this, remember this is a four-star review.

The basic idea is a good one. The roots do tend to grow straighter, and there wasn't a snarl of tangled root in any of my seedlings (24) so far. Being able to open up a 'book' like a CD-case and lift an undisturbed plug of potting mix, seedling, and roots out and into the ground is a great idea, though it mostly hasn't worked that way for me yet. The plastic of the main pieces, the 'books' (4 1-1/2" square by about 5" high cells in a clam-shell format) and the tray, are not made of particularly sturdy plastic. I am using great care not to injure them. The dome gives you a little more than an inch of clearance from the tops of the cells. This means that if you have seedlings that germinate and mature at different rates, like peppers and squash, the squash is pressing up against the dome before the peppers break ground. Some of that could have been taken care of by seeding at different times, but it means I am not able to use all 32 cells at once, which was a selling point. And the 'tray' is for holding the 'books', not water. You will need to have something under their tray to catch the dirt and water that come out of the cells. If you water from the bottom, the roots will come out of the bottom of the cells and flourish in the water, where they will tangle. I also had a problem with my potting mix adhering to the sides of the books more than to itself, which led to some root damage as I opened the 'book'. I used soil and vermipost (material composted by worms). I suspect using peat moss or coir would work better in this regard. I will be experimenting with this as the 2013 season progresses.

But even given all of the problems I incurred, I still believe in the product I intend to buy a second one next Winter to use for the 2014 season. There is a learning curve, but the rewards are worth it.

Received the first shipment of 3 incomplete. No trays. Returned and received a second set of trays and these deformed, kind of wilted, twisted and distorted by just sitting outside in my Portable Bloom house with the door flaps open. The outdoor temp ranged in the high sixties over the weekend in Northern California. The plastic used is so cheap and flimsy they basically will distort in your hands and when subjected to sunlight they are transformed into a new shape.These are useless so I returned and will not buy from this company again. Great idea - Cheap Execution. I would not buy this product. it doesn't meet expectations. As a reference - I had empty nursery plastic plant trays sitting next to these junk trays and no issues with the nursery trays.

Excellent product. Have used these for years. Even when the thin hinge joint breaks, they still work just fine. I put them in the dishwasher after the plants have been transplanted and they are ready to go for the next set of seedlings.

My feelings about this are mixed. I've been putting seeds into everything and anything on the market. I really like these trays and the ability to pop my rooted plants out seamlessly or to check on roots on my cuttings. They are also really easy to clean and not cheap flimsy plastic like regular trays. On the other hand... this system is seriously flawed. What you want to be the humidity dome is actually the bottom water catch that everything is supposed to sit in so the air doesn't dry your medium out too quickly. So when cloning plants, especially, you lose the humidity that is so important to a successful batch. If there was a second "dome" this system would be complete because you would be able to cover the seedlings or cuttings to create the environment they need to flourish. Without the planting trays this system would be worthless, they are a great idea. If you have a spare dome or something to use as a bottom then this thing is worth a shot. One more thing to remember.. If you lose one of the trays then it becomes pretty much useless because the pressure from the trays is what keeps everything together. Happy planting..

The plastic is VERY thin, however, it should achieve what it's meant to do. I don't believe it should last that long given the product was already cracked when I received it. Amazon gladly sent a replacement due to the crack.

You will need to handle it very delicately for it to last a long time. Would expect a sturdier product at the price point I purchased it at ($18.00 USD).

Easy to use and able to grow strong and stable roots. Beware that using the dome in top, you need to put it in a tray or water and dirt comes out the bottom. Love that I can reuse them.

I am so thrilled with my results from these. I used them for corn, peas, and poppies. I ended up leaving the corn and poppies in them for a full month, and the corn seemed perfectly happy. When I transplanted them, their roots were so thick and branchy and happy. I've never seen anything like it in transplants. Same with the peas and poppies. My corn is now three times as high as it normally is by mid-June, and the peas and poppies look great, too. I'll be reusing these next year and ordering a couple more. It is not just that they allow you to start plants that you would normally want to direct seed, but they keep the seedlings happy for a lot longer than they normally would be in seed trays. These are an am amazing invention and I hope they become so popular I can just go to my local garden center and buy them.
